UK online retailer Zavvi is producing a special Pokémon-themed "loot" box to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series.
The store has 500 Pokéboxes up for grabs, and you can pre-order one of them today for £29.99. Inside there are "exciting items commemorating both the classic series and the anniversary itself".
This news ties in neatly with a report from last year that Nintendo was partnering with The Hut Group - which Zavvi owns - on a range of "loot crate" boxes.

The fact that I don't know what is in it annoys me. At least give us an idea. It does ask for your t-shirt size so I guess at least one t-shirt.
Why only UK? All the good news only seems to appear in bigger countries #justswedishthings
...Making my way downtown, walking fast faces pass
Speaking from experience with Zbox, very few are actually worth the money. And they're never worth what they claim they're worth.
Well I don't know what is inside so how do I know whether or not I'm being ripped off.
Please no, I don't want any unsightly Pop figurines and to blindly purchase things I have no idea what they contain.
I bit! Also as I new customer, I used WELCOME as a discount code and got 10% off.
Lifes to short....
sigh £27..ordered. Lovely birthday gift for myself...hopefully.
Nope. I'd rather spend my money on games. Sounds like cheap tat to cash in on nostalgia. Nah, I'm good thanks.
A box of 'loot' for thirty quid. If you don't know what this box contains you shouldn't be encouraging people to order it.
It sounds fun, but I'm not buying a box blind without any idea what's inside.
I clicked on it and it asks for a t-shirt size so maybe there will be one included.
What's the deal with loot crates, anyway? I saw a lot of "LOOTCRATE!" bumpers on several gaming webcomic such as VG-Cats and Ctrl+Alt+Del, but I never understood what was going on with those. Someone care to explain?
@zool They aren't encouraging people to order it. They wrote an article telling readers that it exists. VERY different thing and only the first is unethical.
@AlexSora89 LootCrate is a service that sends themed mystery boxes of pop culture clothing and collectables to you every month. They announce the theme and the franchises it includes a month ahead of time and it changes each time. So a "Space" theme might get you Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Metroid and Mass Effect items. The total value of the box's contents is always said to be more than the cost of the box, which entices people to order. Since LootCrate became popular a number of other services have popped up mimicking their success, most of which are more specific. I, myself, subscribe to the Marvel Collectors Corps, which is a box by Funko sent bi-monthly and themed around Marvel comic/movie properties. They at least give you a rough idea of what to expect, though. Every box (except for their Christmas one) contains two figures, a comic book, a t-shirt, a badge, and a pin, and all of the items are exclusive to the service.
@bro2dragons Zavvi is being advertised as selling something for £29.99 and NL are promoting it, without knowing what it is.
@zool In the sense that every news story ever written is "promoting" the subject of the story, sure. But NintendoLife didn't say the box was great, Zavvi was great, mystery boxes are great or even Pokémon is great. They said "here's something someone is doing to commemorate Pokémon's 20th anniversary. Do with that information whatever you want."
As a news outlet that gives Nintendo-centric information to fans of Nintendo products, this was pretty much what the site is all about.
By an large, NintendoLife doesn't do fantastic journalism (though they are certainly more respectable than some competitors). And I have absolutely no intention of getting this box. So don't think that I'm in league with either party. But NL did it's readers no disservice here and it would be unfair to intimate otherwise.
I've ordered Loot Crate before and it's always bothered me that I didn't know what was coming in the box each month. But it's also really exciting as it's sort of a surprise. Plus if I don't like some of the stuff I always have friends that will
Not one to put down on a subscription but willing to pay for a one off. At £30 even if it's tat I'll just do an un-boxing video and web post it gives me something to post. At least this is dedicated to one franchise other than LootCrate and other which can be a massive mis-mash of tat they had lying around.
Also I'm a sucker for anything Pokemon and Nintendo related.
...aaand they're gone...
Also just noticed the ads that appears on Zavvi's page for the Pokemon ZBox.

@bro2dragons this site is here to promote all things Nintendo which I guess includes, for £29.99, a box of must have collectable memorabilia or a box of rubbish.
I would have agreed with you if this was a few years ago, but in the last few months we are having as many articles about toys as we are games.
@bro2dragons
No wonder VG Cats talks about Lootcrates so much! Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
@zool Maybe because Nintendo has been branching out again in the last year and are focusing their brands on products other then video games. This may come as a shock, but Nintendo started out making toys before jumping into the game development market.
Playing cards are not toys. And I don't think they make toys now, they get other companies to make them.
I'm not a gambler, I'm not paying for something in which they won't even reveal what you can possibly get. Based on their description, it's Gen 1 heavy loaded, which is not to my preference.
eh no thanks
Zavvi is just the worst.
Any site other than Zavvi, and I would have considered it.
I ordered a DVD boxset from them for my Aunt's Birthday, they said it was in stock, so I bought it, and the next day they'd marked it at dispatched.
A week later and it had still not arrived, so I contacted them, they said it had been sent out and should arrive soon. A few more days passed, and my Aunt's Birthday came around but the set still hadn't arrived, so frustrated I contacted them again and they said they'd send out another copy.
Another week passed, and it still didn't arrive. So I contacted them yet again, this time asking to speak to someone higher up, and only then did they finally tell me the truth, that the set was actually out of stock, and had been the whole time.
They didn't even want to give me a refund, claiming that I didn't need one because they could get the set in, if I could just wait a little longer. But I was done with them at that point. I did get the refund, and I went to Amazon, found the same set (a little bit more expensive), ordered it, they dispatched the same day and it arrived the next.
Basically, if you're one of the 500, just know Zavvi are NOT trustworthy.
These lootboxes are starting to sound like the scam of the year 2016. The big possibility that you may get junk you don't want is not at all appealing.
The only loot box I subscribe to is one of monthly cat toys and treats for my cats. They seem happy with it and I don't get my house cluttered up with stupid Pop figurines and T-shirts I was never gonna wear, I get my house cluttered up with cat toys that I don't feel bad throwing away or donating to a shelter after a few months.
