It's the middle of the week, which means it's Media Create results time, showing us what's hot and what's not in Japan. The results show key releases on Sony hardware having an impact, while one new arrival on 3DS does its best to compete.
Kan Colle Kai has started strongly on Vita, while Attack on Titan has also sold decent numbers across three Sony platforms. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has mades its debut in 5th place just behind Street Fighter V; the launch sales of the equivalent 2012 Olympics game on 3DS totalled 43,155 units, so the new entry is only a smidge behind its predecessor with 41,736 sales. There are more evergreen releases on Nintendo hardware further down, but ultimately the charts are dominated by newcomers; results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PSV] Kan Colle Kai (Kadokawa Games, 02/18/16) – 140,757 (New)
- [PSV] Attack on Titan (Koei Tecmo, 02/18/16) – 62,111 (New)
- [PS4] Attack on Titan (Koei Tecmo, 02/18/16) – 61,156 (New)
- [PS4] Street Fighter V (Capcom, 02/18/16) – 41,990 (New)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 41,736 (New)
- [PS4] Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna (Square Enix, 02/18/16) – 33,629 (New)
- [PSV] Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna (Square Enix, 02/18/16) – 27,994 (New)
- [PS3] Attack on Titan (Koei Tecmo, 02/18/16) – 27,415 (New)
- [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final (Atlus, 02/10/16) – 14,408 (110,757)
- [PSV] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix, 01/28/16) – 13,239 (262,182)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 9,506 (1,260,770)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 7,860 (668,003)
- [PS4] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix, 01/28/16) – 7,757 (198,344)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad (Level-5, 07/11/15) – 7,669 (2,210,704)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter X (Capcom, 11/27/15) – 7,660 (2,691,475)
- [Wii U] Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Nintendo, 01/28/16) – 7,596 (93,879)
- [PS3] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix, 01/28/16) – 7,107 (92,645)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 6,477 (802,007)
- [PS4] Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 (Bandai Namco, 02/04/16) – 5,301 (81,934)
- [3DS] Monster Strike (Mixi, 12/17/15) – 5,083 (800,205)
Moving on to hardware, both PS4 and Vita see increases over the previous week, while all Nintendo systems aside from the old 3DS LL (XL) see declines. Combining all of the 3DS 'family' systems does see it climb above Vita into second place, however; the results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 29,363 (27,576)
- PlayStation Vita – 22,191 (17,104)
- New 3DS LL – 16,533 (19,691)
- New 3DS – 4,363 (4,695)
- Wii U – 3,902 (3,933)
- 3DS – 2,427 (2,717)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,665 (1,633)
- 3DS LL – 569 (452)
- Xbox One – 162 (101)
Not exactly an exceptional week for Nintendo, though Mario & Sonic's latest athletic showdown has put in a solid if unremarkable performance.

Go Splatoon!
Wonder how long the lack of Wii U stock will continue? 3 weeks in a row of selling about 3900......hopefully they can solve what ever issue is going on
Very strange this lack of WiiUs in Japan...
@Gerbwmu
They said until the Pokken bundles arrive.
Let's get it out of the way:
1- Nintendo is terrible and incompetent and totally responsible for any low sales even if it's the post holiday doldrums, there isn't much new software, and a highly publicized chip shortage.
2- Wii U is dead, and NX is going to fail even though we know nothing about it, or when it's actually going to be released.
Did I miss any of the constantly re-hashed negative talking points?
Wii U stock will needed to replenish in time for Pokkén Tournement to have maximum impact on hardware in March. People are probably holding out until the anniversary before getting a 3DS.
Mario Tennis has done alright in Japan, considering... it'll hit 100k anyway, not bad considering the negativity surrounding it
Those poor sales for Street Fighter V makes me a rather sad panda.
😔
Did anybody tell Nintendo that 'Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympic Games' has come out at least three or four months too early?!
Apparently the wiiu stock in Japan sucks but even so Nintendo these numbers are really bad and need to be improved like right now. I swear Nintendo is afraid of money sometimes.
😔😔😔😔😔😞😞😞😞😞😞
WiiU need Pokken in Japan ASAP!!!
Is there some trustable information about those rumored "shortages"?
Nice to see Mario & Sonic Rio doing quite well. Cant wait to get my copy! I also can't believe Splatoon is still in 11th! That's awesome!
SMT fans of Japan why are you not buying SMT IV final?
It's selling like half of what the original did :/
Wii U shortages lol
Machine is bombing hard.. Plenty of stock all over the place.
As for SFV. It's bare bones release deserves the low sales and stick it has been getting.
No arcade mode. Come on man that should be standard
@Blue_Blur Yes, it seems that SEGA has done quite a decent job this time, and the sales reflect that!
I love that their charts are so opposite. WiiU & PSV!?!?!?
oh snap 2 weeks in a row with triple digit Xbox sales
@Dankykong Has been like this for a while now, games that come out on PS4/Vita tend to sell better on Vita.
The 2DS (promoted heavily with Pokémon on VC) hits Japan next week. I wonder how well it will perform??
@iamDTS I know, I'm just making mention
Huh? WiiU shortages? Im in Japan right now on vacation. We went to akihabara yesterday and there doesnt really seem to be any shortages. every game store i visited have some on stock.
@diwdiws Akihabara isn't indicative of the rest of Japan. A. it is in Tokyo and B. it is an area that specializes in electronics. The shortage of WiiU consoles has driven the prices way up.. about $100. So there are some in stock (otherwise sales would be 0) but the extreme prices keep people from buying them.
I'd be sad regarding the sales of SFV (Nintendo is lucky Ultra Smash and the Olympic games cart is selling at all) but then I remember: Japan.
This is the rare (yet increasing) phenomenon of a Japanese game aimed solely at competitive online Western gaming.
Then again, for a company to all but kill off their most beloved character (Mega Man) and turn to 'serious' pursuits? That's all too common in Japan now. I think Sega and Namco should be in Capcom's credits and maybe the 3 could write a book.
'How to Make People Hate Likeable Characters' - foreword by Konami.
Literally the one area no other gaming giant has done properly (Rayman comes close), Nintendo makes enjoyable characters.
Easy enough to hate, but man, they sure have endured some terrible times and choices.
The Japanese chart is always admirably predictable. Whichever machine has games out sells. Small numbers though.
Glad to see Splatoon selling well, I keep going back to it all the time.
I'm sure Pokken will help Wii U sales figures, it's definitely something new for the Pokemon series and people will want to buy it.
Not good seeing Sony dominate Nintendo in the homeland. Not like Nintendo will say anything about it. It's "mums the word" with the new CEO in place. People are getting hyped about tomorrow's POkemon Direct, but it's 5 minutes long. Have to imagine it's just a preview of Pokken Tourney with the new Pokemon 3DS games being named.
@diwdiws
Lol. Funny that. I heard the same thing from Japanese based gamers who post on English gaming forums. Plenty of Wii Us around.
What Wii U stock shortage?
A console that sold less than 12m in more than three years should not have a shortage crisis. That's either intentional or bad management.
I have been asking for a link to an official Nintendo statement about this but nothing so far.
