Prolific hacker DarkShock strikes again, increasing his already impressive list of similar enhancement hacks in the past, this time adding MSU-1 high quality PCM audio support for Konami's stellar SNES title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time.
In place of the already quite impressive SPC music, we are now able to smash The Foot Clan with Leo, Mikey, Raph and Donnie to the high quality cover songs of Overclocked Remix's Album #47, the righteously named Shell Shocked.
You can find the patch and instructions on how to use it from the project page here.
And now a serious question for you bodacious dudes and dudettes who come around and comment below: What do you think of the work people are doing with byuu's MSU-1 media enhancement chip for the Super Nintendo? Is this something you enjoy, or should classics like TMNT IV be best left to their original sound format?

The song in the first level is pretty underwhelming IMO. It just sounds like someone doing a guitar solo the whole time. Needs a little more dynamic in it.
Damn it! When I saw the image I got excited that they would be bringing the game to the Wii U!
The music for Sewer Surfers, Burry My Shell at Wounded Knee and Neon Night Riders are part of my 16 Bit childhood.
I don't know how many times my cousin and I beat this game. Also loved how only by beating it on Hard did you get the true ending.
Why isn't the classic TMNT games on the VC again? Also which company owns the rights to classic TMNT games?
Very nice! I might have to pick up one of these flashcarts (if they're still in production)
Only complaint I have is, from what I've seen, anyway, the music seems to overpower the sound effects quite a bit.
Still impressive, and I can't wait to see what hackers can do with this stuff moving forward.
@majinx07
It's Konami... so, unless you want to see it remade as a Pachinko machine, don't hold your breath.
@FragRed Ditto. I saw Turtles IV: Turtles in Time in the tweet and clicked the link before I read to the end. If they could get this game on VC, I bet it would be a #1 seller on the eshop, and it would be radical dude!
I don't remember the music to this game... I remember the gameplay. Why hasn't any Indy devs made a game of this genre for the WiiU/3DS?! Someone get on it!
@SmaMan Not only that, but Konami made this game, but they don't have the rights to TMNT anymore. So they and whoever owns the rights now w would have to come to an agreement. That's about as likely as us seeing GTA VI announced exclusively for the NX at this year's E3.
I've done similar with ROMs in the past, with sprite based games I found it created this weird feeling of inconsistentcy. If the sprite work was upgrade too it'd be perfect but having one low quality and the other high just seems ... off
The reason why this isn't on Virtual Console is possibly the incredibly complicated licensing issues. It was a small miracle we had the original NES game at all since by that time Konami no longer had the publishing rights for the turtles, Ubisoft did. I also had no clue how much money a complete in the box copy of the PAL, US or JPN versions of the game were worth until recently. Unless something changes and this does get re-released on virtual console, those prices will just keep climbing.
@Fuz Already done.
@Shiryu I stupidly gave my copy away years ago, though rebought a cartridge a few years back. I may still have the box and instructions somewhere. If I can bring those two together it'd be quite the valuable piece; not that I'll sell it as I love the game too much.
Of course we all remember how the last attempt at a remake went. I wonder how the one being made by Platinum will turn out. Could they find themselves with a lawsuit if they basically just remade Turtles in Time in all but name?
Cool that this can be done, but I prefer the original chiptunes to the remixes. But, I'll admit, I'm old. Get off my lawn.
The intro sounds terrible, poor solo, out of tune vocals. Terrible. I'd see through it if it was a talented band reproducing the music. But no.
@FX102A Judging from "Transformers Devastation" (which I don't own because I am sticking with Wii U only) I think the new Turtles from Platinum will be pretty awesome. I don't know what good sense I had as a kid to keep my original PAL CIB TMNT IV game but I am glad it was there. And the stroke of luck of picking up a CIB perfect condition Japanese edition along with also Japanese edition of "Dragonball Z", "Contra III" and "Final Fight 2" at local cash converters about 15 years ago... for 5 €uros each. It kickstarted my 16 bit collection bug right there and then and it has yet to stop.
@Fuz yes, you can put anything you want on the audio for these hacks, that's how I already released two sound packs for them last year: "Rock n' Roll Racing" and "Top Gear 2". My next released will be "F-Zero" ASAP.
I'm reading the comments with you guys bashing the work done for the OCRemix album... and I think its a bit sad you're missing the whole point of this hack. But I respect your opinion.
I have that album on my phone - many of the tracks have anywhere from 0:30-1:00 of intro before getting to the good stuff. Now if someone can confirm that those have been cut out, I'd give this a shot! Technodrome and Neon Night Riders are amazing remixes.
On this note:
TMNT IV spiritual successor for mobile with gamepad support - Y/N?
@HyperSonicEXE I mean they already remade the game for the PSN. But if I remember right it wasn't so great.
Add superior sound to the inferior version of this game? Odd choice.
@Spin
Yeah, Reshelled was the arcade version. Man, beating that on Hardcore was some stuff!
But the TMNT II-IV are classics, and even the younger generation likes playing them.
...for 3 or 4 levels.
At least I got re-shelled and Arcade on XBLA before they were de-listed...I'd buy Turtles in Time on day one for Wii U VCe
I'll buy this game but not with that audio though.
This sounds awful and out of place! I played through this game many, many times as a kid. The original music is much better!
Can Activision lose the license to TMNT already? I want the Konami made games released on the VC and even remastered in HD if possible. The Activision made TMNT games are shovel ware, at best. They can't even touch 1/10th of the ones made by Konami. SNES Turtles in Time, Genesis Hyperstone Hiest, the SNES and Genesis versions of Tournament Fighters. A man can dream... 😭
I love this game, spent hours playing this with my cousin screaming cowabunga dude!!! Makes me feel old lol.
@Spin @liveswired @HyperSonicEXE @retro_player_22 @NESlover85 A record label called "Enjoy The Toons" actually just released an officially licensed tribute soundtrack today on vinyl and digitally which has 3 tracks from "Turtles In Time" & is way closer to the originals. It also has the 1987 opening and closing theme songs. Check it out on Itunes, amazon, spotify and all other major digital retailers under 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- Lets Kick Shell" or the vinyl version which comes with a digital vinyl is available now but limited to 1000 total copies at Enjoytheride.storenvy.com or info can be found at www.EnjoyTheToons.Com
My toes! My toes!
@Shiryu Activision now owns the gaming licensing. However Nickelodeon owns all rights to TMNT except for the original black and white comics. Those rights are still owned by Peter Laird.
@Tasuki ...yep, a complete mess to sort that one out.
Now can we get the game?? Whoever is holding the license?? Activision??
@FragRed Would it blow your mind if I were to tell you that there is an HD remake of this game for PS360?

While I applaud the effort, I prefer the SNES soundtrack to be the superior one.
Even the original arcade version doesn't have the PUNCH od the SNES one.
@burninmylight Wasn't that removed due to the fact Ubisoft lost the rights to TMNT?
Urgh. The main 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' theme at the start sounds absolutely HORRENDOUS. Sorry, but all of this sounds pretty bad to me in comparison to the original soundtrack.
I'd have been maybe slightly more impressed if they'd done a cover of 'Pizza Power' for the opening title screen sequence like the arcade version had. Maybe.

@EnjoyTheRide Way to self promote dude. :----)
Be careful, advertising here might be against the community rules.
@Moshugan Totally understood although this is 100% relevant to the conversation & is in fact much closer to the original recordings than the topic and happened to come across this article while reading the site yesterday so very much figured it was worth noting for those fans of music from this particular game.
@EnjoyTheRide Well, I'm gonna check out the album, so your promotion was effective, hehe.
The music and voice acting are hilariously off key! The OverClocked Remix tunes also just do not mix well with the original sound effects at all. (However, the Technodrome remix sounds really good!) These aren't CD-quality renderings of the original tunes, they're remixes that use a completely different wavelength and hertz quality.
Sorry, but I think the arcade and SNES synthesized tunes sound better, overall. Very nice work for what is, though!
@Shiryu If the Xbox360 Arcade and PS3 PSN were able to acquire the game, even if only temporarily, what's holding Nintendo back from getting it on Virtual Console?
A lack of will and perseverance. They don't see this as being worth their time, effort, or money. It took a hellish amount of work and years for companies like GOG to be able to offer some of their games, especially from companies like LucasArts and Bethesda Softworks. Nintendo just doesn't care THAT much about retro titles.
@EnjoyTheRide I just checked out the demos of the vinyl tunes on Napster... My God. They blow these OverClocked Remix tunes out of the water. They actually mesh the synthesized sound effects properly with an electronic 80's/90's style redux of the original soundtrack!
If these sell out, will a sequel edition eventually be made?
@PlywoodStick Thanks for checking them out and the kinds words! If/when the vinyl release sells out then yes we would try to do a repress in different color variants but would need to resign another licensing contract which may or may not take awhile. If you aren't to get one in time then i would suggest following us on social media for updates regarding the second pressing. In the meantime they are available to stream on bandcamp,spotify , apple music , youtube etc... Let me know if you have any other questions
@EnjoyTheRide I'm not able to order immediately, due to the blizzard in the eastern US going on right now. But I'm definitely thinking about it, once it's melted...!
@PlywoodStick I feel you, I am located in NY and not going anywhere. Thankfully I have many web store orders to pack to will start doing that pretty soon. Good luck and be safe, thanks again for your interest & taking the time to check it out. The vinyl release is officially licensed, as is the image for the digital so i think its a matter of time before word start to spread in the tmnt fan community about it. I am really happy with how they came out
I saw the thumbnail image in the link and my heart skipped a beat. I thought it was getting a re-release on the Virtual Console or something.
I used to rent this game all the time when I was a kid and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately when I've tried emulating the game in the past it just wasn't the same, the graphics and the audio were all kinds of messed up and I could never get it to work right.
Dear Mr Nintendo sir, I think it is clear based on the above reactions and heart seizures that TMNT would be a welcome addition to the Wii U VC and could actually save lives. Thank you.
@EnjoyTheRide
Solid basics!
A few too many of the original sound effects and chiptune flair,
But the tracks stay pretty true to the originals, which is far more than I can say for other remixes!
Tell the boys to keep practicing - I'd like to see TMNT IV SNES to get proper treatment one day, and some real instrumentation like this to accompany it!
Oh snap, that image was such click-bait. It should never be shown unless the game is coming, imo. Also, this new sound track is..................awful.
