Wayforward is a studio that has made its name on the excellent 2D platformers that it's put it out. While titles like Ducktales: Remastered, Contra 4, and Aliens: Infestation do an excellent job of showcasing the studio's talent, it's Shantae – Wayforward's flagship franchise – that arguably shines the brightest. The latest installment in the Shantae series, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, is due out sometime early next year and Matt Bozon - the Director of the Shantae games - recently sat down with The Mary Sue in order to drum up more hype around the game and to talk more about the series as a whole.
One of the topics mentioned was how Shantae is very much a modern day mascot, in the same vein as Mario, Mega Man, and Sonic. Bozon agreed with this and shared his opinion on what a mascot is:
When I think of video game mascots, I usually think of characters whose designs are based on their gameplay. Sonic runs and rolls into a pointy destructive ball. Crash Bandicoot spins into a tornado. Mario is a blocky all-purpose shape that stomps or pounds. Shantae is just a whip or a yo-yo headed character. I'd argue that like those other characters, her look in the beginning was less important than her function. But with a lot of mascots, time passes, and the character comes to represent either a certain kind of gameplay, or a promise of a certain quality bar.
The discussion later moved on to Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and while Bozon remained tight lipped as to the game's firm release date, he mentioned that DLC is a possibility if there's interest:
If we sold a lot of copies, and there was a lot of clamor for more DLC, that's a possibility. The game lends itself to a lot of expansion if that's what fans want! There will already be a ton of content with all of the stretch goal that were reached… costumes, extra characters, and Risky Boots Mode! There's a ton of game there, but there's always room for more!
What do you think? Would you like to see some post-release DLC? What do you think qualifies a character as a mascot? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I'd say she's definitely Wayforward's mascot!
I'm surprised she wasn't already their mascot lol.
...hell yes more Shantae would be great, the Shovel Knight treatment would be awesome!..
I've always associated her with WayForward in my mind. I'm really looking forward to this new game.
Shantae is definitly the mascot of Way-Forward.
I would love DLC. Not the biggest fan of Shantae, but I don't hate it.
Plus most indie games do better with DLC than actual AAA developers. (BATTLEFRONT! )
Where's my Shantae... for Smash?
I've enjoyed every Shantae game but I also think that every Santae game has failed to live up to its potential. I really hope Wayforward push themselves this time - Guacameele showed how it could be done.
I LOVE Shantae. Such a fun, fresh series and a joy to play! I always considered it their main IP.
I find it ridiculous for a developer to talk about DLC when there game isn't even out yet, get the game out or at least a solid release date and then you can talk about DLC.
@IceClimbers Obviously. But I can't help but notice how wayforward tends to use too much of female characters in their own games. Shantae, Mighty Force, Milky way..... see my point?
more shantae is always good
Shantae is an okay platformer game. Anything special? No.
Always enjoyed the series and can't wait for Half Genie Hero. From the way its looking with so many great releases on the horizon, my Wii U will be running constantly until the end of next year.
you obvi dont get it man, shantae is tops bloobee
I love Shantae as a character, and definitly would like to see more of her. But I agree with @Mewario : her games are good, but never reached excellency so far, with Pirate's curse being the best yet. I hope she can rise up to Shovel Knight level, if not Mario and Sonic level.
Or at least beat up their *ss in Smash! I'm really rooting for that!
So bored of waiting for this game to come out. Unless it's something truly unique, I don't think I'm going to Kickstart any project again! Very cheeky of them to talk about DLC when the main game isn't anywhere near finished.
I'm hoping for a WiiU version sale in the UK for Pirate's Curse. It's been on sale in NA and on Steam. I've only played Risky's Revenge on iPad so far and I loved that.
Wow and they didn't call it sexist. Achievement unlocked.
@WaveGhoul People who think that sonic is too hard to control never think that why everyone else can control it but they could not.
@HeroOfCybertron The game will be released in a month or two and is probably mostly finished already, just being polished and and debugged. That the developer says that there's room for more game if there should be a demand is in no way ridiculous, it just shows they have some ideas of stuff that might be added later on.
The full interview was nice.
All I wanna know is whether her mother or father was the genie (most likely the former, but wouldn't the opposite be funnier?)
