Genei Ibun Roku #FE - originally known as Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem - arrives in Japan on 26th December. Developed by Atlus and having been rumoured in the past to have endured some development issues, it's emerged as a colourful title with plenty of quirks - it's rather bright for Shin Megami Tensei, while the Fire Emblem aspect seems to be largely limited to combat characters.
In truth it's not the easiest game to figure out in terms of its plot, but a new video released by Nintendo does at least give us a good insight into the gameplay and GamePad usage. There's a good look at turn-based battles and levelling characters up, skills etc, while we also see how the Wii U controller is used for messages and side story information, among other things.
As a little bonus below is a shorter trailer.
We don't know when this is coming to the West yet, but is it a game you hope to play? Or is it not pushing your buttons? Let us know.

I have no idea whats going on in many of these trailers, but, this has a great style and look to it. That alone is enough for me to keep an eye on it.
I'm keeping an eye on the game but this is starting to look less like FE. Hopefully they fix that.
I'm seeing things I like from both series, and I do plan on getting this game if it gets localized, but this game is really Japanese, even for a "SMT" game. I just don't see it doing to well in NA and EU, even I'm struggling with the J-Pop aspect of it.
Going to have to pass on this game. RPGs need to have a compelling narrative, and a high-school J-pop idol kind of deal doesn't fit the bill for me. Even if it was, I wouldn't be able to take it very seriously when the battles take place on an arena with a cheering crowd.
This game is too Japanese.
@ThomasBW84 Are you going to make an article on the Bayonetta 2 sale, £11.99 seems like a steal!

@Grumblevolcano Cheers! Picked up Pokemon Typing, bargain! You can use the bluetooth keyboard with iPad's etc too!
I'm still interested in the game, but what I still find incredibly annoying is that this was initially announced as a crossover between SMT and Fire Emblem, but this now looks like a Persona game instead of a mainline SMT game with some FE characters thrown into the mix. This should have been announced as Persona X Fire Emblem, as I think that would have been more accurate. I was definitely not expecting high-school antics and J-Pop in this game, and I admit that it's quite disappointing.
I know I'm one of the few people out there that don't like it, but ever since Persona made the stylistic switch in Persona 3 it's probably been my least favorite SMT series out there. I don't like the style, I don't like the music, I don't like the plots, and I most certainly don't like the dreadfully boring randomly generated dungeons. How there won't be any of those in here (the random dungeons). This looks more and more like a Persona spin-off, which doesn't please me at all.
Still hoping for a European release though. What are the odds I wonder . Also I still think it's absolutely ridiculous that we have to worry about that in this day and age.
(I actually did kinda like Persona Q though)
Looks the part, very Japanese in style. And it seems like their is a lot of dialogue to dub from this game, so Im guessing the International release will not be until the end of 2016.
@IAmDeclanJay I agree... I worry it will be digital only and reallly expensive... we'll see.
Can't wait enough for this game, it's gonna be amazing!!!
(Even if as all the previous SMT games I fear I'm gonna love it, but not finish it, those RPG are just too long XD;;; ).
This better come out next year over here....
10/10 game looks amazing!
Q) We don't know when this is coming to the West yet, but is it a game you hope to play?
A) It's a large scale, turn based RPG filled with vibrant colours and lovely sounding Japanese tunes that happens to be coming out on the Wii U; it's my most anticipated game of 2016 so far!
Admittedly, as excited as I already am for the game, an English subtitled or dubbed trailer would be nice to receive. I have a decent enough understanding of the game from it's trailers and reading through comment sections of sites like Siliconera, but it's still not a full picture. What I've seen is enough to tell me that it is the type of game I'll enjoy though.
To anyone who struggles with the plot: watch the first and second Nintendo Treehouse presentation. The hosts do a very good job at giving a proper rundown of the story and protagonists, and once you know the basics, it's actually kinda predictable in its overall structure.
Or, to make it shorter: think PERSONA 4, but Personas are overstylized Fire Emblem characters, there is no Arcana imagery, and the party consists of creative youngsters pursuing a career in japan (which is basicall always related to the idol business or similar pop culture things).
I really like the look of the game and the Wii U doesn't have many RPG's so I will buy it as long as reviews are good.
It took Awakening for my son to understand the glory of JRPGs. If it takes this for my daughter to come around, then I'm all over it (although, honestly, I'd be buying the game even if I didn't have a daughter).
@mariovslink62 No, they won't. I think originally, it was intended to be more of an honest fusion of both games in terms of systems, but as the article states, that apparently didn't work out all that well. There are still elements left from FE, the weapon triangle for example, just as several FE-style characters/"persona" of course. In the end though, it's more a SMT game than a FE game, also, it's a game that is I think mostly developed by Atlus anyways, not by Intelligent System, so that was to be expected tbh.
Other than that, I'm not all that eager for the idol/ "moe"-esque theme, but it does look wonderfully weird and upbeat, plus I do love both SMT and FE, so I think I will be pretty happy with it in the end. Also, it's not like there are a ton of other games like it out there, esp. not on the WiiU!
Can someone please enlighten me here? What FE characters are they using? Or what FE series? FE, like FF, have incompatible universes that have no relations to one another. I've played FE 2/4/6/7/8/9/10/11, but if this game only takes pieces of FE13 then would I be lost? o.o
I can't wait too know more about this game really looking forward too it.
This is looking like Persona 4's poppy teenage ideas on steroids. The concepts for Persona 1-3 were interesting, and 4 went a bit overboard with the whole Scooby Doo and J-pop aspects. But this... This might be a little too sweetly saccharine for me, and I usually have a high tolerance for overly sweet stuff. This isn't just not SMT or FE anymore, it's almost not even Persona! It's basically Performa Emblem.
I don't have any issue with the J-pop or idol theming (although the battles shown reminds me of the surreal arenas in anime such as Revolutionary Girl Utena, and the character design reminds me of Hatoful Boyfriend). It looks like it's evolved into some kind of trope-filled playable anime, with a smattering of Persona elements, and almost no trace of occult references and existentialist ideas (like overcoming your fear of death by shooting yourself in the head to bring out your inner shadow self). I hate to say this, but... Pass.
You made an error on the subtitle. It should read "And wonder what the heck is going on with the game"
This game still looks good to me, Negative Nancy.
@japongt uh
......chrom and Tiki is there for starters. Mostly the fire emblem characters are Mirage's in this he which complies to SMT. The battle system is also from Fire Emblem. They already explain the story behind this as well especially at E3.
@japongt They are using characters from FE1: Shadow Dragon and FE Awakening. Anything related to Marth.
I am loving everything about this crossover.
I am loving everything about this game. I love that it takes Alot of the greatness of the persona 4 game and mixes it up with FE: awakening. I love Jpop so that's a perk. And it's so beautiful and colorful. This is my type of game to the fullest. I can tell this is probably going to be one of my favorite games ever already. There is one thing that I am slightly confused on though. This is a Japanese game... Atlus and SMT specifically do Japanese things. Atlus is a Japanese company. It's a Japanese RPG....and people are complaining that it's... 'Too Japanese'. Did people just want some Russian, Australian, Brazilian, culture thrown in there for the hell of it? What's wrong with they're culture and music that turns people off so much? I really don't see much of a difference anyways. From my perspective it's boarderline discrimination. I've always hated the phrase 'Too Japanese'. It doesn't feel good. What's that even mean? I'm genuinely wondering. But I'm also a music freak who loves culture and music of all types who happens to be very colorful in more than one way. Maybe it's my personality.
Not sure if I understand it, but I am willing to give it a try. I like RPGs on my console of choice and I want to encourage/support the developers that put them there.
Game still looks really interesting to me.
Definitely not what I expected bit think it's gonna be a large scale, creative adventure. Hope we at least get it localised with subs.
