It seems like 2D Metroidvania games are all the rage these days among Indie studios. This isn't necessarily a bad problem to have, considering that Nintendo and Konami don't seem keen to make more Metroid or Castlevania games in this vein, but these Indie attempts do tend to blend together. It's nice, then, to see efforts like Paradise Lost: First Contact that aim to mix things up a little.
Here, you play the part of an alien plant lifeform, and your goal is to escape from the facility that you're being observed in. Early footage of the game appears to show an interesting stealth element is prominent here, and combat generally seems to be discouraged. The animation and art direction is quite pleasing to the eye, too; this will no doubt be one to keep in mind in the coming months. Check it out:

Was very interested in this during Kickstarter, looks like a solid game and Metroidvania style games are usually fantastic.
OMG I completely forgot about this game. Glad it's still coming...
Woohoo! I backed this game and I'm glad I did so, it looks great in action!
It looks great but I think we're going to be waiting a while for this, that's if it even comes at all.It was supposed to be released last December yet we're only getting the first footage now?
Wow, this looks ligitamity brilliant! These guys have talent, that's for sure.
What's my opinion on Metroidvania games?
-saturated and unnoriginal
VERY GOOD-LOOKING GAME! WOULD BUY IMMEDIATELY IF MY WII U HAD THE SPACE!
I keep hearing about how there is an overwhelming number of Metroidvania games from indies. But imho there have barely been any good ones so I say keep them coming. Once the market is oversaturated with top notch Metroidvania games, then we can talk about whether indies need to diversify.
Thought this was going to be a video game based on Milton's 'Paradise Lost'....unfortunately its not
@vonseux I'd agree, but every once in awhile you play one that really leaves an impression.
This is joining Hollow Knight and Timespinner at the top of my list of upcoming indies.
@sketchturner My thoughts exactly. I need somebody to point me towards this supposed deluge of quality metroidvania games, because I certainly haven't been playing that many.
Looks cool!
I'm very impressed with everything I've seen of this game thus far. Great pixel art and music.
There's also definitely a kind of Metroid type look/feel to the gameplay--which is most certainly a good thing imo.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the final game.
… this is the same old footage from the Kickstarter. There seems to have been a recent update with a developer walking through a demo, but they also seem to have suffered from some setbacks, so it seems that the actual game is still very far off.
So my point is… why this new article all of a sudden?
Never heard of this till now. Looks great will definitely give it a try.
I like the look of the game but the character seems to move a bit slow and that puts me off a bit.
Neat concept! But lazy, unoriginal, uninspired, and flat out ugly artstyle that wears its "I'm just an indie gotta love me! " badge on its sleeve.
I keep on hearing about indie Metroidvanias and keep on buying them thinking that I'm going to get a game like Castlevania. Rogue Legacy, La Mulana, Valdis Story, Castle in the Darkness, etc. All the ones I've played are somewhat enjoyable in their own ways, but none have ever matched even the low points of the Castlevania-Metroidvania games (I wish I didn't have to put both of those words together, but I can't just say Castlevania and I can't just say Metroidvania either). Not to mention, so many of them are just filled to the brim with references to other games. Like "Lady Shanoa." Very clever, Rogue Legacy. Makes me wish I was playing Order of Ecclesia.
I love Metroidvania games, but I have yet to find one that has a good atmosphere, appealing graphics, tons of weapons and armor, decent RPG elements, good music and everything else that made the Castlevania games so good. Most of the ones I've played fill some of those, but never all. However, I'm really interested in trying out Ori and the Blind Forest.
Please, please, please, let Bloodstained be good...!!
"Another promising game" that'll likely crash and burn like the rest
Really tired of all this pixel art crap.
