As many of you are aware, the Shovel Knight amiibo launches in Europe in about a week and in North America on 8th January. It'll bring a whole new wealth of features, such as a customizable knight, challenge stages, and co-op in the Wii U version.
Yacht Club Games prepared an update to preempt the amiibo launch in Europe, and it should be available for download on the Wii U right now. The 3DS update hit a "small bump on the way to finalization" and should be releasing sometime in the near future. As for North America, the update is planned to be released on time for the amiibo's release in the region. Here are the full patch notes:
- New: Added options to swap confirm/back buttons. Options -> Controls -> Confirm/Back
- Adjustment: Swapped the design of two rooms within the Plains of Passage while playing as Plague Knight.
- Adjustment: Important: Game-Changer: Megaton: Can now stand on the roof of all houses in the Village.
- Fix: The Iron Man 2014 Cheat is back in service! Just enter IM&SGC14 on the profile screen to compete for the highest score in The Lost City. Plague Knight can now take on this challenge with the help of his Treasure Trappings!
- Fix: Uncollected Cipher Coins revaled from dirt blocks not re-appearing if moving to a different screen before collecting.
- Fix: Reize will drop song scroll center screen if he ends up too far to the screen edge.
- Fix: Plague Knight's money bags being caught off screen if he fell down the right-most pit during Propeller Knight's battle
- Fix: Mr. Hat sometimes appearing off his mark during Plague Knight's post-credits.
- Fix: Smoke bomb and Treasure Knight chest capture bug.
- Fix: Minor text improvements across all languages
Nintendo Wii U
- New! Introducing the Shovel Knight amiibo! Scan the Shovel Knight amiibo to activate co-op, Custom Knight, and new Challenge Mode Challenges. For instructions, check out the manual.
- New: Added option to turn off amiibo Functionality. Options -> Game -> amiibo Functionality
Nintendo 3DS
- New! Introducing the Shovel Knight amiibo! Scan the Shovel Knight amiibo to activate Custom Knight, and new Challenge Mode Challenges. For instructions, check out the manual.
- New: Added option to turn off amiibo Functionality. Options -> Game -> amiibo Functionality
- New: ZL and ZR buttons can now be bound when playing on a New Nintendo 3DS.
Also, a word of warning: using the amiibo with a profile will mean that you can't earn 'feats' anymore on that profile, as the new relics and upgrades would make them too easy.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to the amiibo launch? When do you think the next expansion will be announced? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Gush, I just have to pick up the WiiU version! I really want to play the game alongside my cousin. The two of us are gonna SUCK at this game (neither of us is exactly great at 2D platformers).
I have this on Steam, so double-dipping might not happen for me.
This is cool, very suspicious though that the amiibo got delayed to the same day as the Smash Direct. Still think that Shovel Knight rumour from months ago could be true.
@chiefeagle02 But, does the Steam version have amiibo functionality? Co-op? Challenge stages?
Is the extra content worth the price of the toy Amiibo, if one does not want the toy knight, just the code it contains.
The option of having the extra content for a game should be offered as a download at a reasonable price for those who do not want Amiibos.
It would seem that the amiibo has been delayed outside UK too. I went to ask for it from the retailer from which I preordered it today but they didn't have it and didn't know when they were going to get it. They did tell me that they were expecting four figures in the first batch and that I was within the first four preorders so thankfully I should be able to get it the day they finally get the first batch.
Hopefully getting this game for Christmas in disc format! My brother has ordered the amiibo, so we can play it co-op!
If Shovel Knight doesn't make it into Smash I'm gonna be disappointed... I ordered the amiibo yesterday.
I was hoping they'd fix the Iron Man Challenge!
I considered importing the amiibo, but I guess I can wait until the game can actually use it in America.
I'm thinking about picking this up on Wii U very soon!
May be the first Amiibo I actually buy for myself. I love shovel Knight and a two player could be lots of fun
@Zool I think a compromise would be less expensive amiibo cards that coincide with the amiibo figurines, myself. Was hopeful for this when the stock issues were much worse, but I'm not sure if Nintendo ever wants to do this. Their talk of cards seems to have been only about Animal Crossing (and probably Pokemon in the future).
I collect amiibo of some of my favorite characters, but I'd like to pick up a card or two myself just for functionality I think. It would be nice for those on a tighter budget and honestly... if they make them cool enough, I think collectors will go nuts on those as well.
@aaronsullivan I don't like the idea of cards either. I have always bought a game played it and that's it. I know times change and downloading additional content is becoming more popular with game publishers. Release a basic game and if there are enough buyers sell more content.
But not via toys or cards. Nintendo can get China to make these toys for a few pence each and sell them at a greatly inflated price to collectiors of plastic toys, but NOT to gamers.
I've preordered the amiibo and I'm looking forward to the new relics and challenges it unlocks. I've got the 3DS version so hopefully the delay won't be for long, but I'm in no rush since I've barely got round to playing Plague Knight.
I'm still annoyed at multiplayer being tied to the amiibo though. Multiplayer is a significant feature, but £11 is a ridiculously expensive price to unlock it for this game. If they really want to charge for multiplayer, then they should either also sell it as DLC at a cheaper, more reasonable price, or they could also sell amiibo as a cheaper card version. I was expecting cheaper card versions when amiibo cards were first announced, but instead we got 400 Animal Crossing cards.
I've been waiting for a fix to the game breaking glitch for Plague Knight. Wonder if this would do it...
Got my amiibo in the mail yesterday. Not sure if I really want to take out of the box...
@GammaNoises It has already been confirmed that the Shovel Knight amiibo doesn't include the metal strip that prevents scanning while in the box. If you want it to stay in the box forever, you can still scan it to unlock the extra content.
@Grumblevolcano Sweet!
The first change on that list is really the most important one =)
@Grumblevolcano Our silver Mario and Peach amiibo are still in the box - I like the way they look next to each other on the shelf - I carefully used a knife to cut off the back of the package and remove the silver. Sure it won't pass as new on eBay, but I'm never planning on selling them anyway, I just like the look in the box, and we almost never use them anyway, but I wanted the skins in SMM. Never even bothered w/ Greatest Bits, I don't need to play demos of 20 year old games. Maybe if they ever make Minecraft: Mushroom Kingdom I'll take them out.
@zool @aaronsullivan I don't expect it will be long now until we buy the figures and THEN download the game. Since everything is becoming so digital anyway they don't even need to put the game on the toy, just have a 1 time code to download it. If they are going to restrict all of the DLC to the toys might as well restrict the entire game. Chibi Robo Zip Lash and Yoshi Wooly World were both sold w/ the toys anyway. Why make a disc? And some copies of SMM. Only a matter of time.
As for Pokemon, my only question is why has it taken this long? My kids still buy Pokemon cards on a regular basis, might as well pay a bit more for the NFC chip version. Maybe they could add functionality to all of the Pokemon games - Wii U, 3DS, and mobile. Maybe not as playable characters, but as used in Hyrule Warriors for lives or money or something. That's only a matter of time as well.
@MitchVogel Well, I got it from the Humble Store, so I got a DRM-Free version as well. So long as I have a working computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux), I can play it. I'm not tied to a single console, even after this generation is over (or the next, et cetera).
You ask me what I got with mine. I say longevity.
@Grumblevolcano that's a really cool feature, I've always wished they would do that. I'm a gamer not a collector so I open stuff and use it like it was intended. Then look at all the scruffy boxes and wish I didn't have to ruin them to get inside....
"Added options to swap confirm/back buttons."
Oh, yeah!
Just picked up my Amiibo. Cannot wait. Also: Dem button swap options! Awesome.
