Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is a fascinating upcoming release that aims to cross over both of the popular franchises, though it does appear to be more Shin Megami Tensei than it does Fire Emblem. The game has been confirmed to be coming west, though there's still barely any information surrounding the international version.
Hitoshi Yamagami – the Producer for the game – recently shared some information regarding the planning and development. The concept of it has been in production for five years and the original idea was to make a fantasy strategy RPG. The direction that they ultimately decided on was an unconventional one to say the least, opting to make a JRPG set in the modern music industry. Mitsuru Hirata – the chief Director – wanted it to contain modern drama elements and to be reflective of the real entertainment industry.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to this? Do you like the direction they decided to take it in? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I've heard many people be very confused about this game and honestly, I don't get it. All the content and analysises of said content I've seen points into the direction that it's similar to the Persona series. I mean, the battle systems sure looks similar. I don't think we'll go to school, though - which is a pro point for me. Not having school is always positive to me, you know, even in videogames. xD
I am really looking forward to the game. I consider it a nice appetizer before we get Persona 5. Plus, I am glad it didn't take too much gameplay (if anything at all) from Fire Emblem. Sure, it's a crossover but I am really bad at strategy games like FE.
In all seriousness, I become less and less interested in this the more I hear about it. This doesn't really look like either franchise in the title and I was initially thinking it would be.
@MitchVogel "In all seriousness, I become less and less interested in this the more I hear about it. This doesn't really look like either franchise in the title and I was initially thinking it would be."
Couldn't have said it any better, though I personally didn't care as soon as they showed the very first gameplay trailer. Just looks like too much weeaboo stuff with nothing showcasing either series except SMT's battle system, if anything.
I'm just surprised that a game this niche with such stunning production values is being made exclusively for the Wii U. Games like this seem to be a dime a dozen on PlayStation systems, but it's nice that the Wii U finally gets one.
I don't know what to expect of this, and I don't really care. Whatever the hell this game is, it looks great, and I hope it retains as much of its "Japaneseness" as possible.
@sWiTcHeRoO Really, I was just hoping for a Wii U Fire Emblem. I loved Awakening, and think an HD Fire Emblem just like it would be awesome!
Heh, I imangine this style even if its good will still get split decisions down da line considering the tone of the series. Me..I don't mind. Let's see how effective this vision gets.
This looks less like FE/Shin Megami. It should have been a new IP. I honestly wish it was a legit crossover, and not a weird mashup. I'll try it out, but I'm not really as excited as I was before.
"Mitsuru Hirata – the chief Director – wanted it to contain modern drama elements and to be reflective of the real entertainment industry."
And the happy ending becomes non-existent. I tell you, the idol industry isn't as happy as the market tries to make it.
@MitchVogel
I hope they'll announce Path of Radiance + Radiant Dawn HD remaster for 2016 release. Wii U or NX, I don't care which.
I wish they just dropped the FE x whatever and just establishes it as a new IP.
So, what's with FE in the title? Ike is turning in his grave...
When this was first announced I thought the idea was brilliant but here we are what seems like a few years later and I've got no clue what this game actually is, except that it doesn't look particularly appealing.
This game is NOT SMT, nor is it Fire Emblem. It's a slap in the face to the fans and an insult to both franchises. I honestly think the dev team had some in-development assets lying around, and when they tried to make a good crossover and failed, in desperation, they pulled out the assets and slapped FE names to some of them. I hate the fact this game exists. If it were released as a whole new IP and not pushed as the SMT x FE crossover, I would not be this pissed off about it.
But the Megaten franchise already has a FE knockoff. It was called Majin Tensei and released in 1994 on the Super Famicom!
Intresting though, hopefully he will not "mash up" to much, we are in need of some epic rpg's ^^
@pariah164 You take video games too seriously.
@roboshort All this salt and anger was born of soul-crushing disappointment.
@roboshort
Here and Everywhere, is more important that a game be as "you, he, she, etc." want(s) that play and enjoy 'that' game...
Negativism, Negativism Everywhere...
@pariah164 don't want to be party pooper, but don't you also hate Persona games? Those are slaps in the face also in comparison with SMT, because of the school kids, which back then was already started feel stagnated (or maybe even dead horse) and some horrendously bad thing, like the attack of suidicde in Persona 3 (or was it 2?).
"The direction that they ultimately decided on was an unconventional one to say the least, opting to make a JRPG set in the modern music industry. Mitsuru Hirata – the chief Director – wanted it to contain modern drama elements and to be reflective of the real entertainment industry"
Oh my GOD, I hope it won't turn out as dancing game like that last Persona. That would annoy some people and it would begin chain reaction.
Anyway, as bizzare the direction they took look and the name is huge miss if not the biggest false advertaising, it would actually better work as SMT title alone. SMT today doesn't have any bounds and it's name only anyway. It's very flexible series as far as setting and gameplay goes, it could work. But we all know why it's SMTxFE and not new SMT (bigger audience on name alone). It looks like a cop-out on crossover part and setting up the ground for Persona 5.
I'm for one am dissapointed with the direction they went, but after all the wait, I'll just wait and see what it is and if it was worth calling must buy on Wii U or even buying U just for this.
I think this game will be good. I'm keeping an open mind, and I plan on getting it as soon I can.
@pariah164 hahah... You gave me a good laugh.. Anyway, the game does look kind of interesting to me from the preview I saw that came out last week or so. But we'll have to wait and see.. I am not really into most recent anime or manga and the game is pretty heavily influenced by a lot of the anime/manga I've seen recently. Japanese otakus apparently love stories about high school and "idols"
If I didn't know any better I would of thought the trailers were designed to hide what the actual gameplay was. All I've seen in the sneak peeks is cutscenes and running around a map.
At the moment this doesn't seem like any Fire Emblem game I've played.
I'm definitely interested in the game, but I guess it's because I'm neither treating this as SMT or FE. I just think of Genou Ibn Rokou (probably spelled that wrong) as its own original game, that contains nods/easter eggs from SMT and FE.
Where is my English title??
@pariah164 SMT battle system with the distinctions between physical attacks finally being put to good use. It's not what I hoped for, but at least I don't have to get a Vita to get this sort of game.
@MitchVogel Please, I've been hoping for a Fire Emblem that truly showcased the Wii U strengths and built upon the strengths of the Tellius games (PoR/RD). Local multiplayer made viable by the GamePad, crazy battles with at least a hundred units taking part (this was done at least once in RD), and tons of crazy stuff happening once the game gets going!
Awakening wasn't it, the three Fates games aren't as well, but I'm holding out hope.
Or, they could just give me what I'm asking for with a remake of Radiant Dawn that addresses its weak points, like how you can't skip animations in your first playthrough or the complete lack of support conversations...
@Morph basically a Persona game. Go play Persona and this game will make more sense to you
@Splatburst Don't count on it. They'll have to set up a new engine for this purpose, and they sure as hell won't finish it in a year and a half. Maybe 2017 would be a good target for this, they'll want to...make sure the support conversations at up to par.
@TheWPCTraveler
They could have been working on it already. Plus it's 25th FE anniversary next year IIRC.
Well can't say I'm the fan of the direction they decided to go for, it doesn't look at all like Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei to me.
The original teaser gave me such high hopes too, actually seeing two of my favorite series of today doing a crossover would've been epic.
looks like crap and as a huge shin megami fan i am offended and scared.but its a turn based jrpg with weakness system made by atlus with animations by the studio that did mindgame and tekkonkinkreet.that sounds like the perfect game for me on paper...and then they do this...its a waste of talent.its sad.still buying day 1,i take all jrpg,s i can get
Funny thing is that Nintendo wanted the world of Fire Emblem to interact with that of Shin Megami Tensei. I gotta be honest, I have no idea how this has anything to do with Fire Emblem. This is actually turning out to be more like a Shin Megami game than Fire Emblem.
If they added mechanics that had strategy but gave you options like to talk to monsters and what not, then it would work.
The whole modern age pop-star angle pretty much takes the wind out of my sails.
I look forward to Persona5 and the next proper Fire Emblem, skipping this weird crossover completely.
This game isn't the FE game I wanted......but then again either is Awakening.....but it is a JRPG and will be something I purchase when it makes it's way west. Until that time I have XCX for my Wii U and I hope Fates draws me in better then Awakening
Raziel
Going by the comments, it seems like no fun is allowed!
Guess I am The only one excited for this haha I Love The whole pop diva drama with swords this is becoming
But I do hope it will have FE class system
I am looking forward to this game. I don't care if it borrows heavily from either game. I am giving this game the benefit of the doubt since we don't know much about it.
Everybody who is so cooled off on this would be pissing themselves in anticipation if it were just called Persona U. This game looks amazing and you should all just accept the fact that you are not getting a Fire Emblem game on Wii U.
I STILL wish that they stayed with the original direction. (This is reminding me of that time when the makers of Hyrule Warriors were not allowed to make their game more true to the original The Legend of Zelda series!) I am now hoping that fans would make a fan-game that is a TRUE cross-over with Fire Emblem and Megami Tensei!
...if they insist on making this Persona Art Online, though, I wish there would be a Gleam-Eyes Performa in the 'new' game.
Well they are courageous to release a HD turn based JRPG in 2015. After the flop Disgaea 5 did I don't think this one will do much better considering the situation of the market.
I was originally hoping it would be closer to fire emblem but for some reason I'm still really looking forward to this game.
I'll keep an open mind until reviews come in. I have no clue what this game is supposed to be but it seems downright insane and insanely Japanese. For something like this, I can get down with it. I just hope it has a good battle system and a suitably bizarre story to keep things moving along.
Personally I think this game looks pretty fun, but that's just me. Regardless, for those that wanted a "Wii U Fire Emblem," that was a long shot to begin with. Although, I will say that it's more probable that NX gets one. Every Nintendo spin-off/franchise will get dragged into HD eventually, well, every one that's ever mattered.
Sounds like the most Japanese game ever. I love how baffling all the pre-publicity is. I've no idea what will be going on but I'm all for it
Cannot come quickly enough, I hope the west doesn't need to wait too long for it. It's been clear from the start this wouldn't be a typical Shin Megami Tensei or Fire Emblem game, so mourning this fact now is a bit daft.
@Splatburst That would just look about as lazy as Twilight Princess HD.
@MitchVogel I think the key here will be to look at it as just another Atlus JRPG that might have solid gameplay and battle system. Everyone looking forward to its staying true to the franchises it's supposed to be crossing over, including myself, will just end up disappointed and frustrated.
So, I changed my mindset, lowered my expectations down several notches, and now I look forward to what it may bring.
@sWiTcHeRoO
You're seriously expecting PS4 graphics on the Wii u? Or that fan-made TP HD that is running on a high-end PC? We don't know nothing yet what Tantalus has added to the official TP HD.
It would have been like the Devil Surviver series if they wanted the cross over gameplay of SMT demons and FE SRPG. Hell it even has harems and slight dating elements like Persona and the newer FE games.
Omg... Did no one here play persona? This game is doing a perfect job with the crossover. I feel like people here just hate Japanese things and hate just to hate. I get criticism, I get just not liking something, but to say that it's a 'slap in the face' and unrecognizable, or it looks terrible is ridiculous. All the elements they took from fire emblem and smt: persona are perfect and in your face. Why would you expect a fire emblem game in this game when it is clearly a crossover. What's So hard about that to understand? So much unnecessary negative. This is why we can't have nice things.
Anywho, I love the way this game is looking. It's my most anticipated game along with p5. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Graphics are on point and the music so far from what I've heard I adore. Love the music industry style plot line as well. And the palace looks so beautiful. Can't wait for a release date
This game amazes me. If anyone in this comments section was to have been asked to make this game, we all would be playing the next Fire Emblem. What we are getting is so imaginative and creative I love it!
Ok, first of all this game looks AMAZING. Flipping amazing. But because it's being sold to the most anal fanbase in the history of gaming, no one will care. The large majority will either ignore it or complain because of what it's NOT. Because it's not what they wanted specifically. Rather than judge it fairly base on what it IS.
I love Fire Emblem too, ya? I would LOVE to see a Fire Emblem on Wii U! But this ain't it. With that said, it looks every bit as good as Persona 5 and will surely be all the more entertaining for those who are FE fans, or SMT/Persona fans.
It's a shame seeing good game after good game after good game just hammered and picked apart by a fanbase who is never satisfied unless they get exactly, verbatim, what they demand. At least on other platforms games like this thrive. Persona 5 will be a smashing success, because they are more open minded to the new, more in tune with good games all around, rather than only being interested in sequels for a limited number of good games they've played in the past.
I couldn't be more excited for this- it's definitely not what I was expecting, or even hoping for, but now that it's here and laid out on the table, I definitely like what I see.
Many may dismiss this after discribing it as a rpg set in modern day music industry. But then if I was to tell you about a game set around a modern japanese high school setting, with lots of mini games surrounding you living the life of a high school boy. And you can jump into tv's to fight monsters based around being inside a tv. You wouldnt think that would be very good would you? Well I just decribed Persona 4 Golden, one of the best jrpg's ever made. So yes, I am looking forward to this. It doesn't matter what the premise of a game is. If it has an involving story, great design and combat then I will be excited for it. Cant wait
Oh and for all those wanting a "Fire Emblem Wii U", that was never going to happen. It is Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, not the other way around. Thats like wishing Smash bros X final fantasy is an actual rpg rather than simply being smash with Cloud in it. Or complaining that the dlc pack for Mario Kart with the animal crossing track in it doesn't actually feature all the gameplay of animal crossing in it.
In short, the game is a Shin Megami Tensei game first and Fire Emblem game second.
@JaxonH Completely and unequivocally agree with you mate. Been saying for a while it is gamers that are destroying the gaming industry. Never being happy. I guarantee if the game was mostly a Fire Emblem game with a few Shin Megami Tensei elements people would be moaning that the game is too similar to the FE games on 3ds and weren't "wii u" enough.
Ok, this really looks like Persona minus the school bit...I am really looking forward to play it. Much more excited about this than Xeno tbh...
As a huge Atlus and JRPG fan (as well as having a lot of love for SMT and Persona games) I honestly am looking forward to this game more than anything else on the console.
It looks more SMT in many ways than a lot of people seem to think (the aesthetic is way more Persona, granted but all the other aspects seem SMT inclined to me).
As for the FE side of things, I'm not seeing anything but fun nods to the series. I'm cool with that though. I like FE but anyone looking for a FE fix needs to wait for Fates - this isn't even an SRPG.
I was intrigued at first. But I'm going to skip this game. I've never really played a Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei game, nor am I a huge RPG fan. From what I've seen, the game is too Japanese for me...
Man and I thought Zelda uber fans complained a lot. I don't care what this game was supposed to be in the beginning. The wiiu seriously lacks new rpg's and this looks bat s@&$ crazy and fun. I can't wait to pick it up personally. I hope it reviews super well so some of you will pull the sticks out of your butts.
I'm actually shocked that I'm the only one so upset by this, to be honest.
Do any of you remember how this game was initially promoted? Like THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK5-EIzDtKo
As awesome as the graphics may be, this game does not deliver what was promised in the teaser. I wanted something dark, unique, and at least in flavor with both the franchises. From everything I have seen, this is just another stupid game where the females have massive funbags and the guys are all dolts. They had a chance to do something wonderful and stunning and true. A love letter to both franchises. Instead, nope. Generic anime crap with panty shots, large breasts, and a boring-looking combat system. So much potential, so much promise, completely wasted.
You guys have to understand something: I was rolling on a high from both FE:A and SMTIV when the initial teaser landed for this game. I was excited. I was like, 'I don't care how long it takes, this sounds amazing'. Then the April 1st trailer happened, and I was leery then, but decided to keep an open mind. Now, it's like my poor little fangirl heart was popped in a blender and someone hit the puree button. My rage may not be justified, but my soul-crushing disappointment sure as heck is.
@pariah164 jeez see my post above. You may be their leader.
Hopefully they port this over to the 3DS where it will actually move units. Really unfortunate that this game is coming out so late in the WiiU's life cycle. If this was a title at launch or within the first 18 months or so, it could had altered the systems future.
Unfortunately Nintendo release this console to fail.
@pariah164 April 1st. Huh. Might have been a joke.
I'm with you. A legit crossover would be nice. Instead they are trying to fuse them, but it doesn't roll of my tounge. A simple crossover with FE and SMT characters would've been easier. Sigh.
@mariovslink62 Sadly, no. It was shown on Nintendo Direct, so it was no joke.
@JRPGHurtsWallet well Altus was the main developer here. I'm sure the whole sega buy out shook things up a bit. It may have come out sooner otherwise.
@Marshi I agree with you, anyone who legitimately wanted FE on Wii U were pretty much setting themselves up for disappointment. With that being said, this game looks pretty good to me.
Maybe people should start calling the game by its true title - Genei Ibunroku #FE or Illusionary Revelations #FE. The game is shaping up to be great, it has an excellent presentation, and Atlus got people involved from big animation studios in Japan. It is a shame that "fans" refuse to grow up and see that this is something completely new, not a mere crossover. Last trailer said this clearly - it is now FE x Atlus, not SMT x FE.
After all that rant, I can only say that I hope this will come soon to the west - It will be day one for me.
@DiscoGentleman Spoiled gamers? For what? Not liking the game? I guess I have to buy it then and force myself to play it. That's just ridiculous.
Still excited for this mostly because the Wii U has been deprived of JRPGs for all it's life. As an FE fan, I don't mind this kind of thing; the series has been mediocre lately anyway.
@pariah164
It may be anime styled, but it's definitely not generic. And it's almost criminal to say the combat looks "boring". Are you serious? You evidently lack experience with games of this genre. I can guarantee you the combat will be the best part of the game, if Persona/SMT is anything to go by.
And don't think just cause the game shows a little fanservice that it's not worth its salt. If these types of JRPG's just aren't your style, that's one thing, but to call this game "generic" and "boring" when most of its structure looks right out of the Persona playbook (one of the most critically acclaimed JRPG series to date) is more than misguided. Just because you don't like this type of game, doesn't mean it's a bad game. Just because it doesn't fit the bill of your own personal hopes and expectations, again, doesn't mean it's a bad game. Just because you wanted to see something else, doesn't mean what's there isn't rock solid. And a little boobs and doltz guys won't change that.
@Luna_110 Then they should have called it by the new name from the get-go, not continued to push it as SMT x FE.
@Octane
"Spoiled gamers? For what, not liking the game?"
Yes. Precisely that. When people don't like it based on "it's not what I wanted the crossover to be like" instead of judging the game fairly on its own merits, for what it is rather than what it's not, then yes. Precisely that.
@redivgamer90
I think it's a little soon to judge the story and characters. By and large Atlus does a pretty standout job when it comes to their games, and I have more faith in them than most Japanese developers.
Right now I count zero games on Wii U with an anime style. And only one other JRPG, which tbh is like completely different genre from this game, despite both falling under the JRPG umbrella. So this game will definitely bring a unique experience.
Good JRPG's are hard to find nowadays, especially ones with a great art style and high production values on home consoles. I watched a good 30-40 minute gameplay clip of SMT X FE and I really liked what was there. They've integrated shadows into the game (like Persona has) and the whole music industry setting really gave me vibes from Persona 4: Dancing All Night which was centered around Rise Kujikawa and the idol industry. And I LOVED that game- only one I've ever Platinumed 100% in fact.
So ya, Idk, everything about this game is just hitting the right notes with me. But I've also played games very similar to this and know how awesome they can be.
@redivgamer90 How the hell do you know the character personallities and story already? Do you somehow have a DeLorean time machine somewhere that can send you anywhere in time and space? If you tell me just "just because of how they look," then you're statement loses all worth.
@JaxonH If people don't like what they've seen so far, that's not their fault. A lot of people have a limited budget when it comes to gaming, and if their choice is between a game they know they are going to like and a game they might not like, well, I know what I'll be getting then.
Personally, I'm not really interested. I've never played a Fire Emblem or SMT game, and I'm not a huge JRPG fan, but I was intrigued by the concept. The thing is, I don't care at all about teenage boys and girls singing Japanese pop music. The game doesn't appeal to me at all. There's a huge list of games I'm interested in that are coming out next year, so yes, I'll be skipping this game, but that doesn't make me a spoiled gamer. I'm not going to waste my money on games that don't appeal to me in the first place.
@pariah164 check the new trailer then, and you will see that the first thing it does is call the game "FE x Atlus". Unfortunately, NintendoLife insist on calling it SMT x FE. It's name now is Genei Ibunroku #FE. I don't have the link, but you can find the trailer in Serenes Forest.
So in other words, this was originally going to be a sort of spiritual successor to the Majin Tensei spinoff series on the Super Famicom, which was basically a FE looking title with SMT style aesthetics, plot, and mechanics. However, Mitsuru Hirata (and maybe other higher ups) fought with the original plans, and decided to hijack development and turn it into a wacky Persona-esque title that appeals to the highest common denominator of Japanese pop culture (in Japan's teens/tweens media conventions, anyways).
Wow... That's quite an admission. I feel bad for the original developers, possibly including Hiroshi Yamagami. (I don't know if he really approved of this, or if he just had to go along with it and keep the ship afloat...) I wonder how many people just quit the project outright?
@JaxonH Personally, I don't have a problem with the game itself TOO much (although I absolutely would have preferred a spiritual successor to Majin Tensei, and I know that wouldn't sell as well as a Persona style title). What I do have a problem with is that the original vision and development plan of the game was hijacked, specifically for the purpose of morphing the game into something that it was not originally intended to be, just for the sake of getting more money. At least several, if not more of the original developers were prevented from working on the game THEY wanted to make. We, the customers, are not even in that part of the equation.
What kind of terrible conditions for a creative job are there, if all of your hard work can just be destroyed because someone more powerful than you exerts their authority? It takes a lot of guts and mental fortitude to deal with that, we shouldn't underestimate the developers' own desires and just call off those who are disappointed as "entitled whiny children." This goes deeper than that, in ways which don't directly concern us, but should give us pause nonetheless.
@pariah164 It sounds like the original plan was hijacked, more so than it falling through, although that hasn't been publicly clarified. For that reason alone, I disapprove of the executive conduct on this project. That doesn't even necessarily involve the game itself, it's potentially more of an ethical issue from my perspective.
And you're right, this is neither SMT nor FE. It is... Performa Emblem. A Persona spinoff appealing to the highest common denominator of Japanese teen/tween focused pop culture. It seems like it was morphed into a cash in beyond it's original intentions, and for that reason alone, it is a monstrosity.
@PlywoodStick I personally think it was hijacked out of need. Intelligent systems was very involved at first but seemed to back of when it was decided they had to complete 3 fire emblem titles at once. These guy probably just went with what they know best. I can't blame them and it looks like they made something unique and interesting. It's nice to have something different
@faint Even then, it brings up the question of why Nintendo could not field the resources for Intelligent Systems, and if anyone on the team is from the Persona team. If not, then that is indeed a considerably problematic situation. I doubt anyone was originally under the impression that people from the Persona team (presumably) would be working on this title at all, not even Atlus. (Unless they have been, and no one revealed that publicly for all this time...)
@Octane @PlywoodStick
Do note, I made it very clear who I was speaking about. I didn't blindly label anyone who doesn't like the game as "spoiled". That was reservedly targeted toward those who would judge the game based on what it's not rather than what it is. "Oh this game sucks because I wanted this" or "this game sucks because this isn't what I was expecting/hoping for".
That's not fair. The game is what it is. And it deserves a fair shake as such. Not under the lense of what was hoped for, but under the clarity of what it actually is.
Now, as for this whole "hijacked" hypothesis. Do you realize almost every game out there ends up completely different than the original vision? The things you never hear about, but happen on a day to day basis. From what I understand, this was not "hijacked". Multiple persons had different visions, and seeing as the Atlus team is the one doing the actual heavy lifting, they made the judgement call to make a game that they were good at making, rather than attempt something they have no experience in whatsoever. And you may disagree with that decision, but it was their decision to make. If Nintendo/IS wasn't on board, they could have withdrawn their collaborative efforts and developed solo or with another dev. But they didn't. They willingly agreed, so there is no "hijacking".
I swear, if this game was releasing on PS4 there'd be a world of hype surrounding it. People would be gushing all over it.
But releasing on a Nintendo console everyone gets all weirded out over the setting (even though by JRPG standards this is fairly mild compared to some of the wacky plots and premises out there) because they don't play JRPG's. They see this and just react on impulse, "oh it's just some anime about music industry, how lame!"
The vast majority of JRPG's out there have weird settings and premises, much more so than this. Yet fans love them because they don't judge a book by its cover. Fans of JRPG's know sort of thing is par for the course. In fact, it's part of the appeal! The anime aesthetic is a great asset to this game, and the premise is even better. People who actually play Japanese games already know this.
@JaxonH It's not a directly correlated situation, but if I had to describe how this game's development situation feels like for me (and probably many others), it's similar to how Banjo Kazooie was revealed to make a return to Xbox 360... And then it was revealed that it became Nuts and Bolts. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the game it became, but that project was no doubt a hellish one to work for, and many (probably most) Banjo fans were terribly upset that it was morphed into something beyond recognition, just to appeal to the highest common denominator.
If true, then this admission makes it clear that this was not the originally intended path for the project. That goes beyond the changes of plans that happen all the time in game development, this is a crazy roller coaster ride of a development process that I don't think any of the developers signed up for. Even if Nintendo pulled resources from Intelligent Systems, there is nothing to say Atlus had to develop this type of game, instead of one of the many other types they are also good at. (Especially those more like SMT4 or Etrian Oddysey, or one of their many varieties of published RPG titles). Atlus has done the strategy RPG genre before, too.
If this admission is true, then it proves that the project was specifically morphed to appeal to a certain audience, just like Nuts and Bolts was, even if the circumstances are different. That's not to say the game itself will be good or bad. Certainly, more titles of this particular niche is a good thing for Nintendo, and for customers. However... Just like Nuts and Bolts was considered an abomination for it's warped development process, besides the obvious contradictions in the game itself, this feels like a cash in on the Persona crowd, to ensure the highest possible profitability. They did not have to take this path.
If this gets good reviews and plays anything like SMT or Persona or Fire emblem or a mix of all three, then i'm in. I have faith in this game and in Atlus, despite the theme being musicidol related (not normally my thing).
Somewhat disappointed with this, I wasn't really looking forward to this game before the first trailer (thought it was canceled to be honest), but how they are mixing the games don't really appeal to me. I might try it if it stands up as it's own thing, because the Wii U needs more JRPGs.
However, even when taking both titles out of the picture, this game looks too generic for my taste. A modern setting with fantasy/sci-fi elements mashed in have been done to death in Japanese media, even with all the bright colors nothing really stands out with such a cookie cutter art-style.
But I'm probably being too harsh here. I might give this a go when it come around if reviews are convincing enough... but my expectations are not nearly as high as a new SMT or FE game alone.
@Chaoz The trailers for the game have already revealed that the characters' personalities follow popular anime tropes. That goes beyond the usual Persona characters' behavior, of whom are not so prone to tropes, not even Persona 4, which comes closest to being trope filled in the series. I suspect it was intentional to take the Persona 4 style behavior to a whole new level. Persona 5 doesn't even look like it's going this overboard.
@PlywoodStick
Tropes mean nothing. Some of my favorite RPG's of all times were filled to the brim with them.
@JaxonH If this were coming for PS4, they would probably say, "This looks like a weeaboo's wet dream compared to the awesomeness of Persona 5... Remind us why they're wasting time on this when they could be putting more people to work on Persona 5 and any spinoffs it may have?" This is the type of title that fractures a fan base.
@PlywoodStick
I seriously doubt that. I think people would be hyped to the moon for this game, seeing as it does look every bit as good as Persona.
I've seen games that weren't half as good as this one looks, and they have a loyal following on PS. There's no way you can convince me people would reject this. No, not after the likes of Sword Art Online, Disgaea, and Curse of the Great Curry God all with a loyal following.
This game makes all of those above seem like back alley trash.
EDIT*** And you forget, this is exactly the sort of thing JRPG fans love. You mock it, but fans of the genre live for this sort of thing. I know because I am one, and it appeals to me greatly, every bit as much as Persona 5. I was even talking about that the other day- I think I'm MORE excited for this than P5.
It's also the distinguished differences between the Nintendo and PS fanbase. With Nintendo, that's exactly the response people have- "oh this is not my shining beloved franchise, therefore I fully reject it". With the PS fanbase, it's "oh, I like Persona, and this looks similar- I bet I'd love this too!" And they buy it and love it.
@faint
Hilarious. I agree completely. "It's my fire emblem, not yours, not the creators!"
Wow, this is shaping up to be exactly what I was hoping it wouldnt be. Modern music industry with prob all these boring social and dating elements.
I cant for the life of me figure out the appeal of this kind of rpt. I played the dirst hour or so of persona4 and have never been so bored with a game.
I don't want my RPGs to feel like Im watching some offbeat Japanese reality show. I eant epicness with swords and knights and dragons and magic. This sounds lame.
@JaxonH ''They see this and just react on impulse, "oh it's just some anime about music industry, how lame!"''
I don't have a problem with anime and I never said it was lame, but the setting and music just don't appeal to me at all. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. The Wii U needs some more JRPGs, this one seems like a big budget game and if it turns out to be good, that's good; Another great game for the Wii U.
Just as confused as everyone else about this game, I can't really find anything Fire Emblem about this. I've never played a persona/SMT game so I can't account for that
I'm so much excited for this game, I don't know why people keep complaining
@JaxonH No, I agree, as far as the end results of this project are concerned, this title could become a cult classic for all I know. There's just so many things surrounding it that make it divisive. It goes a little bit too overboard on the aesthetics for my taste, but that doesn't mean other people can't enjoy it.
I'm also worried that because Nintendo barely bothered to advertise Xenoblade X, their premier RPG of the 8th generation of consoles, they definitely won't advertise this as much as it needs to be. The project has come this far through so much turbulence, they need to follow through on it now. They made their bed, and now they must lie in it.
This title may decide whether or not the SMT series and spinoffs, especially the Persona series, comes to NX (if it is a home console, or has a home console component). For that, I am torn. It has been a long time since anything SMT has graced Nintendo's home consoles, and THIS is the one which has been decided to have the best chance of bringing them back. For better or worse, that's where the stakes have been laid.
It looks a hell of a lot like a Persona game, which makes me want it all the more
I'm not really much of a fan of most RPG's aside from FE (but I'm starting to think that it's just because I haven't played very many), but I'm willing to give this a shot. It's not the game I necessarily wanted (I was hoping for it to play like FE more at first), but I think it looks kind of interesting still.
I don't think I would be interested in this at all to be honest if it wasn't Fire Emblem related.
I guess my issue with it is the fact that it doesn't seem to really draw from either franchise. I'd be cool with it if this was pitched as an original IP, but if it's being sold as a crossover, I expect it to resemble the franchises that are being represented. All the same, I'm reserving judgment until we start hearing more information about the localised version.
I'll propably buy this game anyways to have it in my collection.
Q) What do you think?
A) Well, I do think you should probably start calling this by it's current Japanese name of Genei Ibun Roku #FE, as it might help to quell the... harsh reactions some of the people within the comments section are having. I also believe that this factor had been previously mentioned before; didn't one of the directors of the Fire Emblem series comment on wanting a modern day Fire Emblem and how that influenced this game?
Q) Are you looking forward to this?
A) Yes, I very much am. In fact, it's my most anticipated game of 2016. A large scale turn based RPG exclusive to the Wii U is pretty much a perfect recipe for me.
Q) Do you like the direction they decided to take it in?
A) Yes, although I do understand the... 'disappointment' of the the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem fans with the direction it has gone. It seems quite different to what their used to (although, given it's mature rating and the destroyed city, I'm expecting a rather sinister plot event later on in the game).
As for me though, having it go from an SRPG (a genre I'm pretty much terrible at) to a TBRPG (my favourite genre) is a wonderful thing for me. I love the beautiful art of the game, and find the style of the game very charming. I particularly love how the game looks when in combat, which looks to be a smoothly paced combat system.
This looks weird, but fun so whatever, I'm all in!
I'm a fan of Shin Megami Tensei and a fanatic for Fire Emblem, so I'll definitely pick this one up at launch, but I must admit, this doesn't fill me with hype. I was hoping for more Fire Emblem rather than whatever this sounds like it will end up being.
I'm just glad it didn't get cancelled, though, given how long a drought it was with any information about it.
I keep throwing money at the screen but nothing is happening! Seriously, just like IF I have a feeling I'm going to cave and import this one early.
