While we wait to see whether US sales of Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival help to make up for it tanking badly in territories such as the UK, we wonder whether the amiibo collection that accompanies the game will fare better. After all, Nintendo has acknowledged that a number of people are buying the figures as collectibles rather than gaming accessories.
That'll be put to the test as the Animal Crossing collection will expand in the New Year. Nintendo of Europe has confirmed that four new figures will arrive in stores on 29th January. These will be Resetti, Kicks, Celeste and Blathers, as you can see below.
Will you be picking any of these up?

They look nice, but I wish they would made Resetti a little more angry
Ahhhhh I need that Kicks amiibo!!!
I want all of them. I love Animal Crossing
The owls are so cute
Kicks for sure... Sadly, I love all of them.
Will those amiibos work on Happy Home Designer?
@Tobias95 Definitely needs to be more traumatizing.
I would like a Mr. Resetti amiibo where he is popping out of the base swinging a pickax, screaming and angry.
and they will be in NA probably Summer of 2016
@ikki5
They are already dated in the NA Nintendo website. Weird thing is Blathers is not in there, so I wonder if that means one of those exclusive deals so he may hit later.
@Fuz Every country in Europe, except the UK, can get Isabelle and Digby individually boxed. Nintendo UK decided to screw us over. I'd recommend getting from Amazon Germany or France. They're roughly £13.50 each.
Cute but I'm bored of the Animal Crossing cash grab now.
Amiibo festival is terrible...happy home designer is boring and repetitive.
I'll always love and play new leaf but these new things are boring to me. I hope they make some money for nintendo though.
@Toadsfriend
I'm tired of the blatant cash grab too...
Target and Gamestop have had a lot of AC amiibo on store shelves. Gamestop even had a few Shulk and Little Mac amiibos along w/ the Spaltoon ones. And the weird 3 R.O.B. pack. First time I had ever seen Little Mac in real life. I think the eBay buying is over and th collectors already have the ones they want. Not much demand from typical shoppers.
I thought about picking up a few for my kids this holiday, but the lack of them doing anything "in game" really turns me off. My 1 kid loves Pikmin and the games, but not in SSB. Maybe if Pikmin 4 gets announced for real and they do something worthwhile. Gandolf still looks the best - until TP releases, that one is outstanding and will probably cost $19.99 - but what does he do? Not that toys HAVE to do anything, I bought my kid a Pop Dalek for $10.99 - seeing the actual Dalek inside is way cool - but these are supposed to be about the game so for $12.99 I'm not buying.
Maybe just Resetti, I suspect I'll need him.
But can the Blathers amiibo identify your real life fossils?
@Angelic_Lapras_King Not without talking his hiney off!
Dear Nintendo - Please stop releasing new Amiibo until you find a legitimate use for them. Or just remove the NFC chip and sell them as collectables for a slightly lower cost. Right now that's mostly what they are anyway. I have yet to find the fun in using Amiibo for games. Why no real integration?
@Tsusasi
Amiibos are supposed to be low cost figurines for those what Nintendo characters while providing a nice extra for those who own the compatible games.
Every time Nintendo releases a game with Amiibo support, they get a huge backlash from gamers and others who hate Amiibo.
With that said Amiibos are selling well, this convinces retailers to give Nintendo more shelf space and presence in stores.
I for one like Amiibos, mostly because they are figurines of gaming characters.
I do like the occasional bonus they give in games.
I do wish K.K. would get a standalone release in North America.
@Xenocity Actually it's kind of the other way around - they were introduced in the 'Toy to Life' category; Nintendo's answer to Skylanders. They were always meant as an accessory for gaming and to be integrated in the gameplay, with their hook being that they can potentially be used in more than one game. They became more collectible because of the scarcity at the beginning and the word of mouth that generated (I have no doubt they still would have sold well, but the madness definitely sold more for them). Fans are collecting them for various reasons but gameplay wasn't a bonus, it was the reason these were launched. Sure the collectability was definitely part of the plan, but they were launched and promoted as a gaming toy. I'm an Amiibo collector too, but I've stopped as of late because of the absolutely abysmal toy integration.

Need. Want. Crave.
I bought 2 of every AC amiibo already and spend around 150 euros on cards so I'll grab these as well.
Why do I want mr resetti when he was the closest thing to a bad guy in the game besides bees?
@sonicmeerkat I want Blathers even though he just does not know when to shut up
Mr. Resetti is hard to resist and I have no desire for other AC amiibo except K.K. Slider. I agree that he should either be angrier, or coming up out of the ground, though! But, I guess he has his good days.
@rjejr
But how are you distinguishing enough stock from ebay scalpers and high demand? I will say that less and less people have been showing up when I go to target to stand in line for amiibo/game releases at Target, but then again, the last time I stood in line my own Target didn't even get them all and people were hip to the other places that were getting them.
Ganondorf right? He is available. I'm pretty sure I have him stored away for Xmas and he looked great. $12.96 on Amazon.
@riChchestM Oh I thought you wouldn't want him since he makes you fill the whole museum.
Great - more amiibos! On the same day Final Fantasy Explorers releases, a week later arrives Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth (a game I've been desperately waiting for for a long time now, even to the point of planning to import it for christmas this year but localization beat me to that)! And then SF5 like another week later! And that all in the month of February, the arguably busiest month of the year for university students like myself.
@AyeHaley
I'm at once jealous and also relieved I havent started collecting the cards. Of course if they interact with the NX game down the line I'll be buying my dreamies for sure.
What's the quality like? Is it like a Pokemon card or flimsy Yu-Gi-Oh card?
@aaronsullivan "But how are you distinguishing enough stock from ebay scalpers and high demand?"
B/c there IS stock on store shelves. 2 Little Macs and 3 Shulks on the shelf in Gamestop tells me the eBay scalpers are done with amiibo. Of course some are still doing it probably, but it seemed like before Every. Single. Amiibo. was sold out in 20 minutes. I'm not sure what the scalpers are buying instead this year - maybe Lego Dimension Dr. Who sets judging by the 3rd party prices on Amazon.
My family spent 30 minutes last night trying to decide how many amiibo a DragonBall Z game could get. We were surprised, it was a lot more than we initially thought. Since Wii U and 3DS didn't get DBXV maybe a toys-to-life game is coming? Cloud in SSB means anything is possible.
Have you noticed how weak the amiibo game line-up is on 3DS? Codename Steam, SSB, HHD. Thats about it. I dont' count ChibiRobo b/c it only uses him, same for XC and Shulk. I was going to buy my kids a 3DS amiibo portal to share but that game line-up is severely lacking, not worth the $20. Wii U still needs an amiibo centric game, but at least SMM and Hyrule Warriors and Yoshi make a bit more use. And Mario Party and amiibo Festival.
So, there are only 11 million Wii U, and 50 million 3DS but only "new" ones have NFC built in, and a portal is $20, and there aren't that many 3DS games that make good use of amiibo. Is it any surprise amiibo have stopped selling out? I don't think they are making all that many more, I just don't think they are selling out like they used to, and that's on the lack of scalpers.
amibo Goku, Vegeta, Picolo and Frieza would sell out though.
@rjejr Maybe restocks, imports, and getting enough new amiibo on shelves is causing the scalpers to shy away. One can only hope. I do see many reasonably priced amiibo on Amazon but Pit is still up there a bit. I haven't seen that kind of variety at Target but I haven't been visiting retail much lately.
I do know that I will collect many more if I can get them at retail price and/or see them in stores without trying too hard.
3DS was never going to be a great place for Amiibo support, though, right? I mean for unlocking yes, but anything where you want to keep the data on the amiibo or necessitates toting them around is going to be problematic. Of course, that's why there should be cards for all amiibo not just specific Animal Crossing blind packs.
Seems like many people collect Amiibo with no intention of using them with consoles. I wonder if many of them have Wii U to begin with. This is a possibly great value proposition for NX. "I have all these amiibo, and the NX games use them and there is this new game where you can do fun things with all of them!"
I imagine the "lobby" home screen of NX having a random famous Nintendo character (probably upcoming in a new game) wandering about and you have the ability to pop an amiibo on there and see what kind of interaction they have. Maybe only a few have funny/cool interactions but you'd try all your amiibo to see what happens.
Or maybe even an actual swirled up Nintendo universe game where you can actually interact with all your amiibo.
In other words, that stockpiling of amiibo might be leveraged on whatever NX is to good effect.
A bit in line with your suggestions of DBZ, I think it's fascinating how Cloud becomes interesting because of a future amiibo. It's like a badge of honor to have an amiibo made of your third party character. It could be a nice little bonus incentive for third parties during the upcoming NX era. I don't know how much sway it would really have, but Square Enix can't be disappointed with the tremendous fan response to Cloud in SSB.
@aaronsullivan Still needs Sephiroth though. Cloud is cool and all, but Sephiroth is my all time villain. And there is no #2.
3DS isn't ideal for amiibo support, I agree. Skylanders 1 was weird w/ 1 player and only 1 character for the entire level. But they made amiibo, and they made "new" 3DS. Best to make a decent game or 2 to make it all worthwhile. Instead we get HHD.
NX will come w/ a Pro w/ built in NFC. Well unless it's 4DS w/ built in NFC and TV out. Can't wait to see what NX is, even if we never get one.
@rjejr
Yeah, I can't wait either. We have our ideas but it's a very tough spot for Nintendo right now. With the Wii it was out of the blue. No one had any idea how crazy it could get until it was all revealed and old guys were playing air tennis on stage. The anticipation of fans didn't include anything so detached from the norm. For the next launch the industry was changing so dramatically right during the launch period of the Wii U, to the point where many wondered if PS4 and XB1 would have dramatically lower interest as well. It has been tumultuous and it's just very hard to predict what Nintendo makes of all this.
NX
If I was to single out the best moment in the life of Wii U, however, it is the success of Splatoon. It shows the best of Nintendo doing things very differently and finding a passionate fan response. My only issue is that there are some lessons in it that could be unfortunate (no local multiplayer, underdeveloped single player, no online chat or voice options).
So, NX is hopefully shaped by Splatoon.
Also, I'm encouraged in the excitement and success of Mario Maker because it speaks to core gamers and Mario fans, retro and modern alike. Not to mention it soundly legitimizes the GamePad screen.
So, NX is hopefully shaped by Mario Maker.
Then there are the words of intention from Nintendo that came a little late during the life of the Wii U and will probably play out better on the NX: Shigeru Miyamoto expressing a direction towards core gamers again, in essence giving up on totally casual players. The commitment to a more solid online account system. A strategy that includes mobile as a support.
So, NX is hopefully shaped by a more agreeable vision.
There's no way Nintendo hasn't felt the burn of third party vacancy on the Wii U.
So, NX is hopefully shaped by a severe need for the return of third parties.
I'm encouraged by all that, but what in blue blazes that makes the NX hardware specifically I'm mostly at a loss. I mean, I have ideas, but much of it is just hope for what I want.
Oh and amiibo. The leveraging of IP in a way that ties into games and keeps fans attached to Nintendo seems to have worked great with amiibo. So, NX is hopefully shaped by that, too! (I just scrolled up to see what story this comment was on!)
@aaronsullivan Wow, that's some fancy shmacny editing you got going on there, did you write it while you were preparing class assignments?
I really hope Splatoon plays a role in that it was new adn fun adn colorful and has great potntial for so much mor.
I rally hope SMM doesn't become the norm as single player 2D level editors in search of a game really don't appeal to me. Though I suppose if they made a SMM2 with slopes the internet would explode in joy. And if they made the game couch co-op playable w/ the bubble mechanic from the other 2D Mario games I suppose that would be ok. But SMM2 really needs to let the amiibo skins work in every era, not just 8 bit. Probably one of the main reasons I stopped playing it.
But I really prefer multiplayer over single player, and I really prefer playing over making. My great appreciation of Skylanders - CHAOS! - and dislike of the DI Toybox has solidified my belief on that. And SSBB was so much better b/c of Subspace Emmissary, I've barely touched SSB for Wii U.
We shall see, won't be long now.
