Some of you may be familiar with the River City Ransom, the classic NES brawler. It's from the same developer as Double Dragon and Renegade, and fits right into the same genre as those two, while taking some creative liberties of its own. While it may be true that it's far from a perfect game and it's perhaps somewhat simple by today's standards, River City Ransom has always been something of a cult classic and now it's getting an enhanced release.
Famitsu made the reveal of River City Ransom SP in this week's issue, evidently as part of Kunio-kun's 30th anniversary. It launches in Japan on 28th April and will include new events, combos, stages, and much more extra content. Development is at sixty five percent, but the game is still expected to release on time.
What do you think? Do you want this to come west? What did you think of the original River City Ransom? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I was never a big fan of River City Ransom. But I would like to see what this enhanced version is all about. Hopefully they would flamethrowers and fire-breathing robots.
Oooh, this is exciting. My brother and I played a ton of River City Ransom as kids. That game was way ahead of its time.
Love it, do still own it on NES and GBA, but I'd definitely buy it a third time given it's more of a remake and remix adding much content to the existing game which would make it feel comfy yet new at the same time.
Yeah I want this game
The NES game we know as River City Ransom was a re-skin of a Japanese game with schoolboys. I'd like to see that game, though it probably plays the same.
NEED THIS!!!
This and.....and........Power Drift please!
I had this on GBA and then downloaded the NES version from VC. Very fun game for its time. Watch the River City Rumble movie by X-Strike studios for a giggle if you're a fan of the game.
Really hope a Wii U HD version isn't far behind.....I'm sure it's not
I really hope to see this get a us release, but it seems doubtful since all the recent 3ds kunio kun releases have been japan only. That series was the main reason I imported a japanese new3ds. Really looking forward to this one!
Um... YES!! I would kill for this to release over here in NA and I know some friends who would too. We used to play this game endlessly when we were kids!
I'm a HUGE fan of this game and definitely need this stateside! I supported a Kickstarter to get this game an official sequel but I haven't heard anything lately. Any sort of enhanced follow up will do!
Japan only!?
@Djreisat There was a Kunio game that was localized for PS3 and Steam recently this year called River City Super Sports Challenge: All-Stars Special. The release was extremely quiet though as if they didn't want it to sell. Still hoping to see this and some other Kunio games get localized, especially since Arc. System works themselves said they wanted to bring more of the Kunio-kun property to the west, earlier this year.
I hope this gets localized. If not, I'll keep playing my VC copy.
