Alternate character costumes in the Super Smash Bros. series have always been a fun way to distinguish players from one another. These variants aren't just simple palette-swaps either, for characters such as Bowser Jr. and Olimar have alternate characters instead of a simple makeover like most fighters do. But you already knew that! However, some of the already-mentioned palette-swap costumes derive from adventures within the histories of these characters - you probably already knew that too.
Whatever the case, YouTube channel TheSuperRetroBros has created a video showcasing an array of alternate costumes within Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and has attempted to pinpoint the inspirations behind each alternate costume listed. Whether this be from in-game footage or even box art, TheSuperRetroBros team has definitely done its homework. However, although some costume origins are obvious, it should be noted that some of these assumptions are purely speculation from the channel's perspective and may not be factual.
Have a watch of the video below and let us know what you think. Are there any in the video that shock you, or any that you disbelieve?

This is a cool vid
Did they consider that some of these might just be color palette swaps? Some the examples felt like a stretch.
I believe many of the costumes are simple color swaps without much thought put into to them.
Haven't watched the video yet. But I would love to see NIGHTS in smash. She is a very interesting character that could float all around the stage
Great discoveries on some and well produced video, but many are complete guesses / lookalikes and this fact should have been noted in the description and at the beginning of the video!!
@Pie7 That does not sound like fun...at least not to those fighting against her/him/it.
Granted, i dont know much about the NIGHTS series in general, but seeing how Nintendo treated MegaMan, i bet they would do a fantastic job.
If their initial companys dont treat them well, lets Nintendo do it
Good video. I was kind of wondering why they skipped over Roy's alts though. I kind of wanted to see his unless maybe it was too difficult to pinpoint where some of his came from.
Isn't the White DK the super guide from DKCR?
Also there are wayyy too many stretches in this video. A lot of them are just coincidence it looks like.
The guy made some mistakes here and there, left some out.
@Einherjar very true lol she would be difficult to fight. But yeah she has such an interesting artistic world I would love to see what Nintendo could do!
It is a OK video but many colors are missmatched,
Some of these I feel they're REALLY stretching it with, and it’s weird how they omitted Peach's Daisy alt. (I know they said at the beginning that the well-known ones would be omitted, but then why did they include Little Mac’s tracksuit, which is pretty well known as to what it is?)
@AlternateButtons
I think you meant the ocarina of time zelda
Aerodactyl, eh? I'm convinced, though I have been taking white Charizard as my "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" Reshiram.
But, as someone who has yet to get anywhere in Xenoblade Chronicles, pretty junk move to open with that can-only-be-a-major spoiler.
Anyone else cringed at the shopped picture of Shadow, as "Dark Sonic" whatever that's supposed to mean. It's an interesting connection but it's just a color, you could argue it's a reference to Shadow and not the altered Super Sonic that was featured for a about two seconds in season 3 of the anime, it doesn't make sense.
Wow! Lots of examples listed here I didn't quite get before, though some I feel are a stretch.
Anybody else think Nintendo could do a MUCH better job with costumes in Smash? Come on! Mr. L.? A real Fusion Suit with its own model? Dry Bowser? What about a better Galacta Knight, or a real Zora Tunic from Twilight Princess? Conductor Link? Different Robot Masters, or the main protagonists from each Mega Man series? What about Sonic's friends, at least Shadow? The possibilities are endless, and I'm barely even scratching the surface.
I cant help but think of Eddie the mean ol Yeti when i see white DK.
Im confused with the Dark Sonic commwnt too. Sonic sort of had a 'dark' moment in season 3 of that show, but that was just an odd picture of Shadow from the show.
Some are just silly "Blue Costume from Mario Golf....shows purple DK
Yeah some of them are just color swaps...but there's plenty of them that actually reference something. I think Sakurai talked about this before, using Samus as an example or something. (or maybe it was Shulk, I dunno)
Awesome video, I just want to say that I loved the piano version of Butter Building that played during the Kirby part. I love Butter Building's theme so much.
Nice video, but I still think some colors origin for certain characters are just assumptions.
Not only are many of those just random pallette swaps, but some are quite obviously wrong - eg Little mac Victory Pose.
@Zapkido They can't change the actual character model in most cases, or it would throw off all the hitboxes. They only got away with Alph since they only had to change an internal feature, the Koopalings since they spend most of their time in the clown car, and I guess the gender flip characters were close enough to do a little extra work aside from their hair which wouldn't be part of the hitboxes. Shadow could've been done since he's physically a Sonic clone, but then he'd have the wrong voice, plus he already appears as an assist trophy.
It would be nice if we got more different outfits like with Wario, Little Mac, Zero Suit Samus, Villager, and Shulk instead of simple color palette swaps in most cases, though.
@BulbasaurusRex I suppose models may be a problem for a costume like Dry Bowser, but I still feel like Nintendo could get away with much more. Characters like Mr. L. wouldn't require any drastic changes, and I doubt changing Samus' visor shape on her Dark Samus alt. would be much of a problem. Even changing Link to look like he's wearing a more legitimate Zora Suit would be no more than changing Robin's hair.
As for Sonic's friends, they might be a problem, due to the shape of their bodies not compensating for Sonic's attacks. I don't see how Shadow being an assist trophy is a problem, though. Litte Mac was an assist as well! Shadow also has a good few pre-existing voice clips, and Robin has changed voice clips as well. Don't know how much of a problem it'd be to get his voice, however.
Obviously a few were stretches, but a lot of them I didn't know about were very likely correct. The ROB ones in particular I suspect are mostly correct (not the 3DS one, I don't think), and really cool to think about.
@RudysaurusRex
No, they didn't, that's why I disliked the video.
Some of the examples were right. Others were just totally made up. You could see to comparisons where one looked nothing like the other.
It felt pretty stupid.
Then they ddn't even bring in the Link ones, Dark Link etc.
I know it said they'll add what's missing, but come on, the Link ones are the most obvious, they should be impossible to miss.
