Following reports last month Super Mario Maker would include 100 pre-made courses, the official UK game site was updated earlier this week to read the upcoming Wii U title will feature "dozens of sample courses" to help inspire players to create their own levels.
The latest news surfacing via Nintendo of France has now revealed Super Mario Maker will include about 60 levels. To make up for it, Nintendo has released a new video featuring Rayman's creator, Michel Ancel, who has been busy with Super Mario Maker himself and appears to have designed at least one of the pre-made courses in the game. Despite the fact the video is currently only available in French, it's still worth viewing below.
Tell us in the comments if you're excited about Rayman's creator contributing to Super Mario Maker, and if you would perhaps like to see more game designers who have a history with traditional platformers lend their creative inspiration.

This is awesome! I'm so looking forward to play his levels. In fact, I think Nintendo could make an awesome marketing campaign with this game. They could get big celebrities or even famous game developers so they can create levels for Super Mario Maker and everyone would be damn exciting like: "Omg I can't believe I'm playing an actual Mario Bros level created by Obama" for example. Hahah.
Playing this game in the Super Mario World graphics is going to be one big nostalgia trip for me. I grew up on that game in the 90s with the SNES. I didn't get to experience SMB3 until All-Stars, so I'm used to that graphics style...not the NES one.
I'm calling it now, because of this news the game will now be delayed till an Xbox one version and ps4 version are finished.
Grid paper pad + gamepad combo.. Hm.. thats serious level design
I am betting that the level will come as DLC at a latter date as it wont be finished.
It's funny because Ubisoft.
That's actually kind of a neat idea. I was thinking levels made by many of the original SMB development team would be a treat but having a who's who of game developers making levels for the finished product?
I hope they got as many different developers in to make a level or 2.
That's really cool. Kinda annoyed about the 60 levels instead of 100, but there'll be a lot of content online. And what people have said here is right, celebrity levels could be an amazing thing for Super Mario Maker. I kind of doubt it'll happen, but it would be great.
Will they delay it to the last minute so they can port it to other consoles?
Nice. I like his work on Rayman. Now I need a Kamiya made level.
Retro should do a bunch of levels - I loved their work on Tropical Freeze and I assume they did Metroid Zero and Fusion as well.
And they should get Sonic trilogy + Knuckles veterans as well and others who have done great platforming games.
Would love to see a level from Doug Tennapel
This is actually pretty interesting! ...It sucks that I can't understand the video (I don't speak French), but I'm a fan of Rayman, so this is nice. It would be nice if more special guests would design some levels, also.
I would really love to see Miyamoto design a Super Mario level, or would that be too meta. Seriously, this game has me excited - I've got ideas in my head that I can't wait to try. I'm gonna do a bunch of SM3 airship levels. This is like a childhood dream come true. It would be cool if we can view our levels like in the old Nintendo powers use to with a continuous scroll.
I love the idea of guest developer levels. I hope it keeps up post launch as well.
Erm, I thought they originally said the game would ship with 100 pre-made levels 😕
This isn't Ubisoft—it's the creator of Rayman.
Two completely different things.
I think this is cool, but the picture they have of him makes him look like such a douch. Like, he's cocky or things something more of himself.
Even though Michel Ancel's games are published by Ubisoft, I don't really consider his games 'Ubisoft' games. They're always more polished - design-wise, than the standard Ubisoft stuff. One of my all time favourite games - Beyond Good and Evil is his creation.
This is exciting stuff. Kind of wish he was doing more than one level
@Spoony_Tech 30 Rare games for $30 = 1 SMM level by Ancel and another 59 random levels for $60. Nintendo probably decided 100 levels for $60 was too much to give us.
I don't get all the excitement. I'm sure his level will be just fine, but there are probably some serious Mario fans out there who will make levels 10x better.
We are going to be able to exchange levels day 1, yes? It's not going to be dragged out like Splatoon or SSB 50 things that took about 8 months? Shouldn't really matter if there are 5 or 500 levels on disc a few days after release, there will be a flood of levels. No FLUDD levels though, probably saving that for DLC. 2D FLUDD.
@MadAdam81 I was thinking the same thing. That would be awesome.
Really? we now forgot this?
http://www.ign.com/articles/2011/12/05/rayman-creator-doesnt-enjoy-playing-mario-games
Then again that would explain why his games are pretentious boredom pieces.
Can't wait!
@MadAdam81 No, Retro wasn't involved with any Metroid games other than the Prime trilogy.
@Red_Blood_Crush Wow, you're really reading way too much into a simple picture, and being a douche yourself.
Great. I really like the old Rayman games, and it'll be interesting to see how this level differs from levels designed by Nintendo.
I agree with those that have said they should get other famous devs to contribute, that would be very cool
@Megumi
This is Michael Ancel, a great man and one of the most talented developers alive today. Not the publisher his games used to be sold through.
@minotaurgamer
So you don't enjoy Rayman titles, or is it some other title from him like Beyond Good & Evil? A shame really, especially the newer ones are very well designed and better than the New Super Mario Bros titles.
Now I want some levels made by hardcore japanese developers. How about a Platinum Games or Treasure world, only for true players?
@JaxonH Was just mocking Ubisoft, because, you know...what they did to UbiArt. lol
@Megumi
Gotcha. I just see a lot of people who take their frustrations out on Rayman- which is a great game (and Mr Ancel suffered for it) because of the actions of a mega publisher.
@rjejr
I own Rare Replay and it's fantastic value.
But it's also an absolutely horrid example of a game to judge others by. Rare Replay is almost certainly another one of Spencer's ploys to garner good will after the tanking of the Xbox brand early this gen. And all credit to him for the amazing job he's been doing turning their reputation around. But that game cannot be the standard all games are measured by, or nothing will live up. In fact if it wasn't for the games having already being made, there is no possible way they could've profited one dollar from that game. They're basically selling Rare's back catalog for goodwill rather than cash in on its true value. And that's fine, in fact that's awesome, but it is not a realistic standard.
@MetaSmasher It was a joke since he works for Ubisoft, but I guess it's hard to pick that up if you aren't smart or have common sense. Sorry if you weren't born with either
I see a nod to pacman in one of those levels. I seriously can't wait for this.
This must mean...
... Rayman's coming to Smash!
People saying this confirms Rayman in Smash incoming even though that's an incredibly stupid suggestion.
I can see them adding youtube upload features for level play throughs an a massive focus on sharing levels making this a big game.
Also the article saying ''despite being in French'', reminded me when I used to play Command and Conquer on the N64 an switch the language to French, the Commando's lines were absolutely brilliant in French (cheesey American lines said in French are 300% more cheesey lol).I recall the N64 Hexen game being released in French too, ''Salet mortal''.
Like the Merovingian said, ''like wiping your arse with silk''.
I want Rayman Legend on 3DS, where is it? Rayman Legend makes Mario platforming looks boring, I hope Nintendo try something new with Mario games in the future. A cell shaded Super Mario game would be nice.
The Rayman developer is making ONE Mario level?!?!? Ohhhhh man!!!! Hopefully it doesn't get delayed the month it is finished and pushed onto other platforms over the course of a six month delay. Tell him to shove it. In French.
Following the success of Splatoon, Super Mario Maker will have 4 levels available at launch, only 2 of which will be playable in each 4 hour window. 2 new levels will be released each week, but you can only play them if you happen to log on at the right time.
You can create as many levels as you wish, but you will only be able to share them with friends after the January update.
@JaxonH For all the talk of how much money MS must be losing on that package, I think they are making money. As you correctly point out, all those games are old. They've already been made and sold, and most of them probably already made a profit, and even if they didn't, it's too late now. The only cost at this point is the hours spent on the front end, packaging and shipping, the games themselves are already owned by MS so they cost them nothing. Compared to the $7.6B write-off for Nokia, which they bought for $7.2B, MS is rolling in dough for that $30 package, no matter how many they sell.
Granted, it's not a fair comparison to a new game like SMM, but I think comparing those games to NES and SNES game pricing is. Unless you don't think Nitneod has made a profit on Super Mario World yet? You have to admit X1 having more N64 games than Wii U does seem a bit wrong.
@AdanVC a level by Obama? Obama can't even create a good economic climate much less a good Mario level. Obama? What are you thinking?
@chardir lol!
So is his level gonna be included in September or is he going to say September, then push it back, push it back and then go multi plat with it?
@minotaurgamer I didn't. This is hypocrisy. It makes me sick.
People disrespecting this great developer just because he works for Ubisoft. sigh. Either way, lookin forward to this. (btw Rayman 4 plssssss)
That's a great idea! They could also have some people from Rare do some levels. And several other developers from games like Limbo, SuperMeatboy, etc.
@abbyhitter Yeah me too!
@Mus1cLov3r: Exactly!
@FargusPelagius I think that feature is already part of the game.
@minotaurgamer So what? He voiced his huge respect and admiration for Miyamoto and the Mario games. He just said he personally doesn't like to play it. I don't see what's wrong with that. It doesn't mean he doesn't like the Mario series in general. And really, you're hating Rayman games just because of that? Then you must be really a fanboy (and people sometimes call me a big fan/fanboy of Nintendo). The Rayman series is awesome and has a big tradition on Nintendo consoles. I don't see what that takes away from Mario, which is an even more awesome and iconic series.
@rjejr Why do you always have to badmouth everything? 1. You can't really compare game prices that way. 2. Do you even take a look at things before you critizise them? Those included levels won't be random, but made by the staff. And judging from what we've seen from them so far (like at the finale of the Nintendo WC), those levels will be really mindblowing! Statements like "Nintendo probably decided 100 levels for $60 was too much to give us" are totally unnecessary and uncalled for (I'm pretty sure the real reason has something to do with time/ressources). You probably know yourself that it doesn't work like that (otherwise you would be really naive). And I'm pretty sure there will be hundreds of awful levels made by uncreative/incompetent users.
And you can't compare Splatoon and Mario Maker at all. There wasn't anything "dragged out". It made totally sense to go that way with Splatoon. But Mairo Maker is different. Why on earth would it make sense to not have the level share option on day one? What you're writing absolutely makes no sense.
But I have to second you on your other posting. I had posted this before (on another topic), but yeah, I'm pretty sure MS makes a profit with Rare Replay. It shouldn't have cost them much. And having more N64 games on Xbox One than on Wii U does feel weird.
@MetaSmasher Actually, Retro is responsible for the design of the mechs in Federation Force.
@shani No way no how Spaltoon HAD to be dragged out like you say. Heck most of it was already on the disc, all they had to do was let us use it. And SSB only just had tournaments added a couple of weeks ago, despite being in the "50 things" video. And the Miiverse level was added much later as well.
Sorry I'm awlasy so negative, I'll try harder. Here we go.
Thank you Nitneod for making me get up early on a Saturday morning to go stand online at Gamestop to order a 3 pack of amiibo even though I only want 2 of them, I'm sure you know better than I that I really need all 3 I just don't know it yet. I wish you'd stop being so good to me Nintendo.
@rjejr
I get that part about the Amiibos (although I wouldn't have put in so much effort for them).
It's no news that most of it was on the disc before (although I didn't buy the disc version...), we know that since a couple of month. But I think they actually made the right decision not to release everything from the start. Not only did we get to appreciate every map/weapon/item more that way, it also produced more happiness for me. Everytime I knew there was something "new" coming along the way, I (as well as my friends) was full of pleaseant anticipation. Also, this strategy of Nintendo ensured that people would continue to be psyched about the game and not loose interest (although the game is so awesome, it wouldn't have happened for me at least).
Besides, this way everyone - including the total noobs - was able to get accustomed to the game and learn every detail. People who never played it, think Splatoon is a simple game. But it is actually very complex and there are a lot of different strategies and ways to play it, depending on your own style/preference, your weapon set, your items, the map, the players etc. Releasing a cram-full game would have distracted a lot of people of the core mechanics and diverse strategies/ways to play. And it surely would have overburdened some players for sure.
I have to say, I would favor other games being released in that way, too. I really had more fun this way.
As for SSB, I still don't get what this tourney mode is about. I don't play Smash very often but that game already had a lot of modes when it was released. Some of the party modes are nices, but I can't imagine a lot of people playing anything else than the main, normal Smash mode. So I couldn't care less about that tourney mode.
Oh and btw, I'm not against you critizising in general, I do that all the time when I find something to complain about. It just sometimes seems like all you want to do is badmouth everything on purpose, even when there are good to be happy about. For me there are far more things to be happy about than to critisize regarding Splatoon, Mario Maker, Smash, MK8 etc. So I try to focus more on what brings me joy.
What if Yuji Naka got a level, too? I wanna see.
@Red_Blood_Crush so adolescent, just wow
@shani It has worked out for Spaltoon, and from what I've read Plants vs Zombies:Garden Warfare did basically the same hing about a year ago on Xbox, but I am afraid of it becoming the norm. Travelers Tales already puts out a lot games piece by piece. Do we really want Zelda U to come out 1 dungeon at a time b/c Ntineod decides we should explore every nook and cranny before moving on to the next one? When Lego The Hobbit released i t only included the first 2 movies adn was suppose dot release the 3rd as DLC. But then after about a year they said they never were. I dont' want to pay full price up front for a full game and have to "hope" the rest of it comes out. Yes, it worked for Sapltoon, but I'm worried about the precedent. Between Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 I can only imagine Mario Kart 9 will come out with about 1 dozen tracks and we'll have to wait on the rest.
And if Spaltoon had all come out at once, we still have the Splatfests every 3 weeks to keep people interested. And this is the big update but we are still waiting on rainmaker. Some day all games will be WoW I guess.
@rjejr Woah hell no, for a huge open world game like Zelda this would obviously be a no-go. I'm sure Nintendo won't ever do this. But with bordered games like MK and SSB? Sure, if the updates would keep beeing for free, I would be fine with that.
But I would also be fine with keeping MK8 and SSBU and just making more DLCs. I would totally buy an all-F-Zero-DLC or a Doubledash-DLC (with Doubledash-Mode, two characters in one kart, each with his own items and maybe even their personal special items) for MK8.
Yeah in Splatoon's case it worked out wonderfully, and after recently looking into a wiki on Inkpedia
SPOILER!
I read that there will be (at least) 12 maps in the game. Ever wondered why there is one free spot (per mode) for a third map in the lobby? I bet when we have 12 maps - probably when rainmaker is released - there will be three maps in rotation or every mode, because then we would have four modes which makes a total of 12 maps.
Or they keep it with only turf war in regular and three modes (splat zones, tower control, rain maker) in ranked battles, which would mean a total of 6 maps (= half of the total) in rotation for every four hours.
http://splatoonwiki.org/wiki/Stage
I'm looking forward to seeing what Ancel has in mind for a Mario Course, Rayman Origins/Legends are possibly my favorite multiplayer platformers, and Beyond Good and Evil is in the top 5 games for me from that era, and I still gasp whenever I hear rumblings of the sequel.
