Dragon Quest XI is a good while off, so much so that a Nintendo NX version was sort-of announced before some inevitable backtracking once Square Enix realised it had somewhat gotten ahead of itself. We have seen the 3DS version in action, though, which looks like an accomplished portable alternative to the HD version that'll be gracing the PS4.
A neat aspect is that in some parts - though not the full game - there'll be a modern 3D view on the top screen and a charming retro-style top-down view on the bottom screen. There'll also be sections where the screens will match up a little more, and some screenshots released by Square Enix show off the different styles that we can expect.
Check them out below and let us know what you think.

If it doesn't come to the West, I don't care how good it looks.
This is really shaping up to be pretty amazing. I'm currently playing Dragon Quest VI on my 3DS at the moment, since I haven't played it before and I'm looking forward to playing through Dragon Quest IX again, since it's been years.
I think the way the dual screens are being utilised for Dragon Quest XI is really amazing. Can easily see myself looking at the bottom screen through most of my first playthrough, haha.
Hope it get localised soon anyway, along with Dragon Quest VII and VIII.
Next purchase on my Japanese 3DS! Looks really good!
Day one buy! Not kidding! If it looks great on the NX (whatever the hell it is) i'll buy that version and the stupid console.
Oh I cant wait for this one!
Looks nice. Here it is in action for anybody who missed it. It's an over the shoulder - literally - camera view but it still looks sweet.

never been super into DQ, but I really want this game. The 2D/3D thing is amazing even if you can't see both at once.
@ekreig I wouldn't be surprised to discover it isn't a 2nd game engine but just a really fancy update to the "map" system
I like a good RPG! I'd love to play this on 3DS.
The nuts would be a Wii U version, with gorgeous HD on the big screen and 16-bit graphics on the gamepad.
To be perfectly honest, this dual screen gimmick has me wondering whether to buy this on PS4 or 3DS, when I'd 100% have gone for the HD game otherwise.
I'm still far more interested in the console version, but this one is cool nonetheless. I'll probably get it for the PS4 (or NX if the console is somehow released by the time this game comes out... assuming it ever gets localized)
It's all well and good until somebody gets hurt (North America and Europe) this story of these Dragon Quest games not being ported is a sad one.
I grew up with it back when it was still dragon warrior. I loved the old menu screens and styles. I might just have to give this a looksy.
Oh my God. I need this game...please Square (Enix), please....I'll take only this of all the DQ games unlocalized, I just need this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this will end up like Dragon Quest IX. I can't just feel it. Didn't Nintendo end up Porting that one? I think they will do it for this one too. Like I said I can feel it.
If this game isn't localised I will be disappointed after seeing how well it is shaping up. I am definitely not expecting it to be though.
I really like the style. And sorry for saying this, but the top screen reminds me of golden sun, not sure why.
Looks great!
@ricklongo I know! This is ingenious, why didn't anyone else think of this.
This looks awesome. I've only played IX before and I loved it (been meaning to play VI). The art style in the top screen looks very good.
I will probably end up getting this on the PS4 and the 3DS. Both versions just look so great I want them both.
It looks amazing. Please please please bring it outside of Japan!!
What can I say? This looks incredibly good! I really do love Dragon Quest. Its just been very frustrating seeing all of these Dragon Quest games get released on the 3DS and not localised for western release.
@Tasuki My thoughts exactly. They both look too good to miss.
I would pay ÂŁ100 to have this on my 3DS
If there was the option to cross save between the 3DS and NX versions I'd definitely have both. The different displays on the top and bottom screens is an absolute genius idea and I love it.
I really want the 3DS version but I love to play RPG's on consoles so I really hope they have a cross save feature.
That's pretty cute. Level-5 did a nice job with Layton's London Life, so I'm looking forward to more oldschool pixel RPG stuff from them.
I adore this graphic style,Im getting the PS4(or hopfully NX) version but am definitaly double dipping for the 3DS version.
Looks great!
I bet it only runs on the New 3DS.
All this article does is make me mad. I haven't seen DQ7 yet or 8 on 3ds. I super mad about DQ10 not on Wii U. I thought it would come to the U.S. On the 3DS. This is why I haven't liked squareenix in years and don't get me started with those monster games.
Love JRPGs, but never really been a Dragon Quest guy. Still, the visual concept here is absolutely brilliant, looks exceptionally well-executed, and should be used in more games.
Hopefully Square actually brings this one West (still waiting on DQ7 and DQX).
Looks beautiful .
Part of me questions why you would make it play two different versions like this...but I'm too impressed by the results to care if it really makes any sense, lol.
Hope all of the npcs are in 3d this time around.
