Intro cutscenes are generally the first real bit of a game you get to experience beyond the menu, so it's pretty important that they hook you as quickly as possible. We at Nintendo Life have coupled together five of what we feel are the most exciting examples, whether it be because of atmosphere, dialogue, or just downright awesomeness.
Check out the video below to see the list for yourself!

Samus is just a very awesome character.
Poor Samus has been reduced to what these past 8 years??
@Spoony_Tech
One ok Wii game and an awesome trilogy release? Plus a long deserved break?
@Spoony_Tech Sigh... I think you just opened the door to unnecessary comments and arguments. -_-
@VeeFlamesNL Just doing my job!
That was a nice video and all, but how about we see the top 5 Nintendo system bootups?! Well... maybe not. Nintendo system bootups aren't exactly... 'epic.'
@DarthNocturnal Couldn't remember when corruption came out. I thought it was 06?
@VeeFlamesNL Accidentally doing the secret GameCube openings blew my mind but I suppose I was pretty young. Nintendo bootups add to the suspense like when you're stuck on the health warning thing on the wii when you turn it on and you're searching for batteries for your wii remote. And then plinkety plonk it opens and you have the cool Wii Menu music.
@DarthNocturnal Well that's almost 8 years anyways. 6 weeks off.
I personally always loved the intro to soul reaver
I love the intro to Sonic Colors. If an add on to the list were made, I would love to see it in there.
FFVI (III in US) always and forever
i mean, mechs, snow, stellar music, pseudo-star wars vibe.
SQUARE at their peak....
and nostalgia
I just love that F-Zero MarioKart music.
As for Bayonetta: The Bayonetta 2 intro is even better! Extremely over the top and silly!
Melee was a great intro sequence. Definitely.
No Dragon Quest III - list is automatically incorrect.
@timp29 Me too. That's one of my favourites. Cain was deified...
Although it's not a "cutscene", my favorite intro is Metroid Prime 2: Echoes main menu screen. That remixed music would give me chills, then the snippets of gameplay were always so awesome.
I may boot up that game now just to watch the intro again
I personally think Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 have some of the best intro cutscenes in gaming myself, but I'm a big Kingdom Hearts fan so I might be biased. Bayonetta 2's intro was amazing as well.
Some great picks though some of my top 5 would be different. Sticking with the same theme of must be on Nintendo consoles:
1. F-Zero GX (Story mode)
2. Rock Band 2
3. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
4. Sonic Colours
5. Majora's Mask
Instead of Bayonetta's opening, I'd choose Bayo 2 opening - you fight angels on top of a jet and Rodin drives a car on a building's side. Still, both are great!
My favourite will always be Persona 3 FES' opening. As for Nintendo, yeah it's pretty difficult for anything to beat Melee, though Twilight Princess does at least match it IMO.

I'll have to disagree with most of these. Super Mario Galaxy's intro with the UFO uprooting Peach's Castle was very epic and deserved to be in this list. I think Resident Evil Revelations' intro segment was really good too with Jill and her partner boarding the ship.
No.1 for me will always the brilliantly cheesy opening to Mystical Ninja starring Goeman!
Nothing gets me excited and ready for adventure like the original Kingdom Hearts.. Or to a lesser extent KH3D since it uses the same music (shame about the game itself, though...)
I'm also fond of Majora's Mask's spine-tingling muted horror, Final Fantasy X's understated in medias res piano ennui, and Skyward Sword, if mostly because of the music.
The ones in EA's LotR games were pretty good.
Lego City Undercover's cutscenes were better than the game but I can't remember the intro.
The pic to this topic inspired me to play Bayo 2 again. THANKS YOUS!
I don't know about 'intro' cut scenes but no game will ever top the epic movies from SSB Brawl's Sub-Space Emissary. Try watching them all together on YouTube. Untouchable.
Melee's opening is probably the most epic in gaming to me, and I'm not even one of the hardcore melee-only kind of fans.
...how many games did Alex play? There are tons better options than those...
I think Xenoblade Chronicles could be a good contender for exciting intros.
I feel like the Sonic Unleashed opening was one of the best in gaming, it captured the characters perfectly and got you (the player) hyped for the game that would finally end the sonic cycle(so we thought) I'm surprised SA2 was on ahead of Sonic
There are all kinds of openings and intros. Even on Atari and other computer gaming systems from that.
Also you do not want to over do your intro and scare people away form the game itself.
Just an cover with some music is okay.
The best Sonic intro would have to be "Sonic 3". There is nothing else that beats seeing Sonic fall from the sky with the death egg in the background and the hint of Knuckles.
Every game after that was gimmick after gimmick. Sonic CD probably tops all but that is animated with an bulky SEGA CD system.
Only other intro is Shadow. Which was the last time Sonic was really Sonic.... I love the Pee-Wee hurman evil voice over being used for dark. Even how Sonic and Eggman commands Shadow making requests from him. It is so 2001 war in the Orient kinda decision making process.
For me it's definitely Skies of Arcadia although I am very biased 😀 the music! The sense of adventure! The breathtaking sights! Damn what a fantastic game I just gave myself goosebumps gonna go play through it again right now!
@timp29
Yeah, but all in the Legacy of Kain series were great. God I miss that series. A shame it's ended.
