We know that Nintendo Treehouse staff are serious gamers, and a former member of the club and now a well known Senior Product Marketing Manager at Nintendo of America is aiming to show his commitment to a favourite game. Bill Trinen, well known for his Nintendo Direct appearances and ongoing role as translator for Shigeru Miyamoto, has quietly entered Evo 2015 to compete in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
His name was spotted in a pool line-up, and the NoA man took to Twitter to chat with fans once he'd confirmed that he had indeed entered the competition.
He's made clear that he wants the focus, once Evo rolls around, to be on those who enter the competition year after year and keep Smash Bros. at the core of the event; he's keen to play down the importance of him taking part.
Gauging the tone from his tweets, Trinen's hoping to simply compete well if not actually be in the running to win, having last entered a competitive event for Melee a decade ago.
Evo's running from July 17-19 in Las Vegas, and should be exciting as always. Smash Bros. for Wii U and Melee are the 2nd and 3rd most entered events, with the new entry actually surpassing the numbers for the GameCube classic. It should be a great weekend of Smash Bros. action.
Thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

Just represent Nintendo better than Reggie embarrassingly did.
I hope it will not be another case of Reggie during the NWC '15.
I always look forward to seeing how much of a pro Smash player the higher-ups of Nintendo are. Mixed reactions with Reggie, so I'm crossing my fingers for decent matches.
I expect Bill to get eliminated by a fire-type move.
Trinen is a cool guy. I don't even care if he does well or not, just his will to enter and how he's keeping a low profile about it all seem very respectable traits to me. I also did see him fighting Toph and rekt'ing him - it was far from a serious match in many ways, but still, fun viewing. He is definitely no Reggie tier player, that much is for sure, haha.
He's probably gonna get bodied early on lol. No one at Nintendo is good.
I know it won't happen, but I wish he could show the super technical hardcore crowd how it's done.
@DarthNocturnal HungryBox - the pro player Reggie fought against - just threw around some of the usual trashtalk, but admittedly it was pretty meh trashtalk even though the Nintendo community takes way too much offense at it. In the end it was meant to be fun and part of playing any eSport.
The thing the other poster is referring to is probably the fact that Reggie absolutely sucks at Smash. As in, complete beginner level, just mashing buttons and not even knowing how to go back to the stage after being pushed off.
TeamTrinTran!
Well, it was to be expected that Reggie has no idea of how to play.
But I'd expect Trinen to be at least able to defend himself a bit.
Bill isn't actually half bad. He could do decently in pools.
I understand Reggie isn't all that much into games and Smash for sure, but he really could of praticed a little bit before showing up at the NWC 2015.
@DarthNocturnal What @LinkSword said. I might also elaborate more on the mixed reactions thing; I was supposed to be angry at the way Reggie played, but it was just too funny watching Reggie fall off the stage time and time again I couldn't stay mad at the poor guy.
I don't know about the trash talk palaver, so I don't really care. Maybe Reggie deserved it or something.
@LinkSword It was complete disrespect to Reggie, not this trash talk BS. He obviously has no manners and doesn't know how to act civil.
This is kind of cool. Bill seems like a nice guy. He is one of the few PR people at Nintendo that I don't have really any beefs with.
Evo is kinda more serious than the NWC, so I hope Bill will take it seriously and won't completely fail. If Bill Trinen have some good Smash skills up his sleeves I will even more respect for him.
I didn't know that Bill was once a competitive Melee player!
Neat! I'll root for ya. Just promise me you know how to Up-B!
I wish I could attend. Online tournaments are neat most of the time, but it'd be nice to have in-person experiences.
Oh well. Two more years 'till I can travel on my own!
Bill actually seems like he wants to do real well. He's even looking around for smashfests to get some practice in before the big tourney.
His job is on the line! it's kill Bill or Bill kill!
@Hero-of-WiiU Actually, Reggie does play all of the Nintendo games. He came out on record and said he sucks at Smash.
I've come around on Bill. He seems much more genuine than robot Reggie. All he needs to do is hold is own & I'll be gunning for him to take Reggie's job!
@Hero-of-WiiU He pretty much told him ''For being the president of Nintendo [of America], you suck at Super Smash Brothers'', which, rude or not, is a huge darn truth. xD He and Reggie aren't even in bad terms, they get along just fine.
I'll keep my opinion that you are all incredibly quickly offended, thank you very much.
@Hero-of-WiiU You're way too easily offended if you think that. I'm guessing you think Reggie is just as disrespectful? After all, he followed up Hungrybox's comment with some trash talk of his own.
As long as he does better than Reggie.
@Hero-of-WiiU " Look so i spent 16 hours a day running a company. You spent 16 hours a day playing Smash so" Reggie said this so he didn't care one bit and it's true. Who's the real loser a guy running a company? Or a guy playing Smash all day? And stop being so sensitive.
Well, if Bill was a competitive Melee gamer (and Lord, those guys are hardcore!), I expect that he knows quite a lot about SSB, plus obviously he will prepare a bit for Evo. I don't think he'll win, but I hope he makes it past the first round.
LOL, I like this guy. Possibly my 3rd favorite person from NOA, just behind the face of Nintendo Minute (Kit and Krysta).
Here comes to 0-2.
But it's cool to see a Nintendo employee show up at EVO at all.
@TwilightAngel I really wouldn't go so far as to say Hungrybox is a loser, Smash is how he makes a living, it's the entertainment business and if that's the branch of it he's good at and he doesn't, he's not really a loser. And I think you probably missed the part where he clearly said he's also an engineer.
Bill would have to be a complete fool to sign himself up - if he's at Reggie's level of play. I don't believe that is the case.
Sorry, but if you're the head of a company, it just looks really bad when you can't play even the basics of your biggest game. If you can't play the game, don't make promises about competing. lol
@Moon
Did you see the treehouse smash last year? He wrecks house!
Two years ago I couldn't stand the sight of Bill, too bland and boring, but I've really come around.
I'm not sure how he'll do, but I'm sure if he entered he can play. That was the thing about Reggie, it wasn't that he lost, it was that he looked like he never played the game before in his life. It wasn't even remotely interesting.
Bill wont win, but I'm sure he'll know what he's doing. And he'll have fun.
And hopefully he won't mention NX.
@TwilightAngel The guy who spends 16 hours a day working. A 16-hour workday means all he gets to do after work is sleep. If you think work is better than video games you need to get your priorities straight. No. If you think a guy with enough free time to play video games 16 hours a day, or a guy who gets payed to play video games is a loser you're crazy.
Oh yeah. I came here to say "Bill's gonna wreck!" but I got distracted.
Im still a bit baffled that people actually debate that "these guys cant even play the games they make" compared to people who spend their entire time perfecting it and train for these tournaments specifically.
And those arguments about "it looked like he never even played it" well, maybe he hasnt, who known. Reggie certainly has quite a lot of other, more important things to do then to train for competetive Smash play.
His first opponent, "Bye", is pretty pro. Hope he makes it past that first round
Why all the hate because some exec of a company can't play a specific game?? Jesus it was just a bit of fun. I guess being crap at smash must make him crap at his day job too
Eh, sounds like sneaky Nintendo PR shenanigans to me.
@Einherjar Well, it does come off as unusual to see Reggie suck that bad when the Live Event 2014 had him act like a rather experienced rival for Iwata. It was very obviously fake, but the gap between fake and reality proved to be very large. Not to speak of his trash talk against SoapBox after the Smash Invitational Tournament.
I admit, I'm a bit shocked as well to see him play that badly, but at the same time, I don't see any obligation for him to know his stuff. It's just that Nintendo had all of this tension built up only to kick it off the next cliff.
It amuses me, how many people think that people working in software-making companies (games, apps, etc.) are masters of them Actually, after a whole day of working on something, the LAST thing you want to see is that game/app. I never really use stuff that I build at work, because it's just "oh, I will have to fix it, oh I will have to add something here and there" for me Plus, Reggie is an executive, he's much better with spreadsheets than games
@rjejr I've been away for a week, did you hit the big 5 0 recently...? Happy Birthday Sir! Keep on gaming, that's fantastic
Please at least know how to jump.
at least it will mean one Nintendo employee will understand competetive gaming.
Bill should run NOA.
Laughing pretty hard at all the people fully buying into Reggie's ''you play Smash 16 hours a day'' stab. That may be true for people like Mango, who literally have nothing but Smash to make a living, but HBox successfully graduated as an engineer, all while playing competitively. A huge safety net below him for whenever Smash stops being profitable for him, which is a very sensible thing to do.
So if you people can call a guy who excels at several videogames while keeping his life and future all sorted out a ''loser'', there is probably something wrong with you. Easily one of the last people in the Smash scene you could address as such.
@MJKOP - Thanks. Not yet, but I decided to celebrate my birthmonth in case I don't make it to the actual day, stress from Splatoon ranked battles is killing me. Like horseshoes and hand grenades.
@rjejr ha, celebrate the whole month, I like your style! I hope you make it to the actual day, enjoy!
@ikki5 He can't do worse. (-.-; )
Best of luck to Bill.
As a wise man once said: "Don't get hit."
@rjejr Haha. I actually have something I'd like to send you... not sure how I'd ever do that, though.
Splatoon ranked battles are so intense, but I love it. Went back to turf war and it was quite the shift.
How many hours a day does Bill spend playing Smash? Running a company? These are the important questions.
Also who does he main??
@Einherjar No one here debated that. No one. I Ctrl-Fed the comments so I know. You're doing worse by spinning the arguments in your head. The closest was one guy saying he should at least know the basics if you're the head of the company, which he should because they acted like he knew how to play and he claims he plays the games. Maybe the head of the NOA doesn't need to know how to play, but someone who claims they know how to play should be able to.
Actually I take it back. He said he sucks then he said he'd practice for a year and come back and win...but he didn't practice. Which is understandable because he probably meant it as a joke(not because he's running a company)...but still he said he could do it and he failed to even turn the game on(it seems like he was saying he'd do it in transit so, basically when there was no work) so of course people are going to call him out on it. Not to mention the fight with Iwata that made people expect more.
OK I finished watching. Wow. Even with the power of the audience's heart. What a scrub. I've lost all respect for Reggie.(Not really. I've got to say because Poe's law and all that.)
UGH, Of course the year when I'm like "I'll hold off on EVO" a Nintendo rep shows up. If there is anyone I'd want to talk to right now it would be Bill. Tying to get into professional translation work.
Wait, were people expecting a COO to be amazing at a fighting game? Doesn't Reggie also have a family? Between his job, traveling all the time and likely seeing and hearing about games all day I don't think smash is his way to unwind. Not saying he doesn't play games, I think he plays animal crossing a lot, but I think it is silly to expect him to be a competitive gamer. Besides I'm sure his job is high stress...Fighting games don't work as stress valves for all people.
Personally I respect Reggie for even doing the tournament. He knew he was bad, they could have gotten someone to play for him but they didn't and he was pretty nice about the whole thing. I know people love to bash the Nintendo higher ups but to be honest If the VP or CEO at my company were half as willing to have fun and make fun of themselves morale would skyrocket. The Nintendo higher ups may be suits (except Miyamoto...he is god) but at least they seem like humans in suits.
Oh, man. You guys are something else. I mean the commenters. Get over the trash talk. It comes with the territory. Reggie can take it.
Hey, just sent you an email, @rjejr if you want to check.
