It's that time of the week, once again, for Media Create Japanese chart results, and there are some strong sales for the latest Wii U exclusive, matching up to chatter that stock had been scarce due to demand; Wii U hardware sales jumped, too.
We're referring, of course, to Splatoon, the colourful shooter that's been generating a lot of hype since its launch. There have been plenty of posts on social media suggesting that a number of stores were selling out of stock, and that's been reinforced by the results - it's claimed top spot with over 140,000 sales. Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX claims second place for 3DS, while there are a couple of notable landmarks further down; Mario Kart 8 has passed one million retail sales, and Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition has passed a quarter of a million sales.
The top 20 is below, with lifetime sales in brackets.

- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 2,526 (3,977,777)
The hardware chart brings positives, too, with the Wii U in the unconventional position of leading the way. Its sales more than doubled, while the combined 3DS family sales pretty much match the home console's performance. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.

- PlayStation Vita TV – 529 (423)
- Xbox One – 522 (308)
Splatoon has had a strong first week in Japan, then, which is more good news after its second place début in the UK. It'll be interesting to see how the shooter's momentum holds up in the next few weeks, too.

Not much of a surprise. I think most of the players I've been matched with have Japanese names.
Yeah, lots of japanese players online. And surprisingly few problems with lag despite that.
SPLATOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!
This is a very good sign! While it's not quite the killer system seller, it performs exceptionally well!
Long live the Wii U. Splatoon rules!
Nintendo has a way of making extremely fun games.
I've breathed a sigh of relief. C'mon million seller mark.
When I see Japanese names in my online matches a cold bead of sweat forms on my brow.
I wonder what has caused the MASSIVE bump in Xbone sales this week?
I'm more surprised at Psycho-Pass getting in the Top dozen than Splatoon moving 17k Wii U, to be honest.
Glad to see it do well.
@readyletsgo Probably "Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness", rocking in 12th place.
Splatoon = worth it
At this rate, i can see it being a new steady IP for Nintendo.
@readyletsgo Mandatory happiness for Xbone owners. You can't opt out, it's Microsoft!
I've not had too many problems with Japanese players to be honest. Don't see what the fuss is about really. I've seen just as many good western players as Japanese.
3DS really seems to be dropping off in its strongest market...
Nice, more Wii U sales! Splatoon is great!
By the way, and for context.
Mario Kart 8 <RCE> (Nintendo) {2014.05.29} - 325.892
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U # <FTG> (Nintendo) {2014.12.06} - 227.527
New Super Mario Bros. U <ACT> (Nintendo) {2012.12.08} - 163.528
Splatoon 144k
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate # <ACT> (Capcom) {2012.12.08} - 106.388
Pikmin 3 <ACT> (Nintendo) {2013.07.13} - 92.720
Nintendo Land <ETC> (Nintendo) {2012.12.08} - 72.121
These are the WiiU releases (bar Xenoblade wich sold about 85k), Splatoon did SUPER well
Is anyone else wondering why FF X-X2 HD is selling so much? Like, damn...
@rishisquid its a typo (those numbers are from Smash)
it sold 3k this week, 25k so far.
2.994 / 24.498
@Faruko Oh, okay, I was really confused...
@TheWPCTraveler haha must head over to purexbox and see if they are reporting the good news too
Mario Kart 8 has a million sales in Japan!
Splatoon is amazing, and I'm quite happy for its sales prospects right now. It could very well be a multimillion seller worldwide, which it absolutely deserves.
Great numbers for Wii U
Excellent software figures! Hardware numbers could be better I suppose but then even MK8 only bumped hardware sales from 10k to 20k, and this isn't far off that.
Wow, that's really surprising! I wouldn't have thought Splatoon would've been the game to get Wii U sales up in Japan.
Now we just wait for the inevitable person to come and say those are terrible numbers compared to the PS4 and Xbox One.
Wow, color me surprised. I didn't expect it to sell that well. I'd have said it would sell 30.000 copies. I'm happy to see it has sold much better
I genuinely can't be any happier for everyone involved with making Splatoon that it has achieved what it has so far.
@DBPirate This is Japan though, Xbox One doesn't sell there
Why is Microsoft even selling the Xbox One in Japan? Oh that's right, they don't
Let me rephrase that: Why is MS even TRYING to sell Xbox One in Japan?
That's a fantastic debut for Splatoon, now as for the other consoles, those numbers are horrific.
YESSYESSSYEEEEEEESSS The power of Splatoon!!!!!!
Going to have to look for reviews for the psycho pass game though. I'm hoping it is good as it may push me to buy a one.
There you have it. Proof that games sell systems!
@Faruko
Thanks for that.
@DarkCoolEdge - Yeah, I guessed 30k-50k myself, but @faint knew. Surprised he isn't here to gloat.
The US doesn't get weekly numbers, does it? I'm thinking Witcher 3 sold pretty well last month, so no matter what SIXTY DOLLAR Splatoon did in the US in May it will look small in comparison.
As for Splatoon selling Wii U consoles, that's a nice # for the week, as I don't think there was a Splatoon bundle, and the Wii U sold well a few weeks ago when the XX bundle released.
@Kaze_Memaryu - Makes me wonder how Wii U would have launched bundled w/ this rather than Nintnedo Land?
Doesn't look like Wii U will ever sell well at this point, but I'd really like to see them make an effort by dropping the price so maybe some kids my sons know can buy 1. 4th and 7th grade boys w/ so many friends and not a single Wii U owner among them. One 10 year old was over on Saturday saw me playing Splatoon and he had no idea what it was, and he's big into videogames. Moslty Minecraft and things w/ guns. He can make some cool looking guns out of Trios (think Legos only bigger).
Its hard to justify a price drop, yes, it will move more consoles but at this point it might be too late.
Nintendo might as well maximize the revenue for each and every sold console
@IceClimbers Forgive me, I meant the incredibly successful PSVita.
Looking at that software chart, there's a lot of the systems I have: Wii U, Vita, 3DS. It's like a strange, alternate reality from North America.
Very impressive debut, considering the supply shortages. Probably a soft drop next week too, as people who couldn't snag a copy over the weekend will get one as the new shipment comes in. Then there's the content roll out over the summer. I can see it being decently leggy. Good!
Hardware sales continue to be depressing for all systems, but I guess Nintendo has to take this as a win. Comparable to the bump last year for Mario Kart and fairly stable YTD.
I see mostly Japanese names when I'm playing online now lol
I kind of expected the hardware numbers to be higher, but you take what you can get I guess.
Wow, I did not expect these type of sales..
I'm really glad to see Splatoon doing so well.
It's sold decently everywhere else as well. It is an amazing game that I recommend for all Wii U owners.
Splatoon is exactly the kind of game that you can use to convince your mates to invest in a Wii U. Show it, play it and they're hooked
Almost outsold MP10 within the first week. The time for party console games is over.
It so kawaii.
Anyway, good for this game. I still have no interest in it until the price drops to $20-30, but it seems like a fun experience for Nintendo-only fans.
It deserves the sales, such a good game. Singleplayer is just as amazing as multiplayer and they perfectly nailed the vibe they were going for. It feels like half of the game was made by long lost CrazyTaxi and Jet Set Radio developers, then the other half was made by budding geniuses under the tutelage of the Nintendo masters.
Wow, congrats Splatoon! I remember someone on here saying it would break 100,000k in its first week there. Didn't think that they would be right. Whoever said that, bravo
This game is great! Everyone should buy it, like NOW!
It's Nintendo, not Mario that sold this one. Good for Nintendo. Heard that they sold out in Japan but I'm still impressed that it sold Wii U consoles like that!
I don't expect the same thing to happen in the US. Maybe strong software but I don't see a big hardware bump. Just guessing at this point, though. The messaging about Wii U is a bit sloppy right now.
There needs to be a strongly pushed and highly focused marketing campaign with a price cut, IMO. Nintendo just needs to maintain relevance as they approach some big future changes (mobile, NX, etc.) Splatoon and the competitive games that everyone can enjoy, is a good place to start.
@AVahne
That's cool if it doesn't float your boat right now, but part of the fun with an online game like this is riding the wave of competition and exploring things as they are revealed. It could be a long time before there is a price drop like that and the community and game will be different by then.
I'm waiting to give it as a gift to my daughter and it's a bit painful. lol.
I'm not surprised Im always put into rooms with only Japanese players.
I haven't purchased it yet... I do want to get it thought.
THE GAME THAT SAVED THE WII U
Yay!
I'm not sure why people are saying they expected 30k. Even 'super flop' Bayonetta 2 did 40k on week 1. Pikmin 3 did 100k week 1 when the Wii U install base was half the size it is now.
My prediction is that it AT LEAST doubles the Wii U monthly figures in North America too. Wii U did 43k in April, when most months it does between 60-80k. Just going back to normal would mean a doubling in sales. The headlines might be twisting the truth a little, but it will happen.
While this is really great for Nintendo, I have the feeling that this will be only a momentary push just like Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros. Still, good to see that a Nintendo game is Top 1 game again.
Well deserved. I was excited for Splatoon ever since it was revealed at E3 last year, but I wasn't expecting to enjoy it this much. It's so much fun.
@BLPs no matter how many times i see it i love that gif...
Good, this game looks to be on track to pass 1 million, which for a new IP on the Wii U is quite the accomplishment. Glad to see it's doing well, this is one IP I want to see become a permanent part of Nintendo's lineup.
that's just the gleam of hope Wii U fans like myself needed. Splatoon may very well ensure a better lifespam for the Wii U and spark some interest from third party developers
I'm not surprised. I've encountered plenty of Japanese players during my session in this game. Japan sure love squids...and tentacles.
@rjejr not much for gloating. I expect a good second week too. The numbers will get a big drop due to front loading but they did have an 80 percent sell through. I'm hoping for 50k next week.
Spla2n confirmed.
@BLPs Someone should make him hold a Splattershot.
@Peach64 People (a lot) were expecting this to be Wonderful 101 2.0 in terms of sales.
I really want to get this game....but that $70 price tag is really holding me back.
@Faruko That's pretty crazy how people were thinking Splatoon was going to be like TW101 2.0. Nintendo pushed this game. Hard. No way it was going to sell as low, especially considering the install base now vs a couple years ago.
If Nintendo cared about marketing for all their other games and the Wii U in general, as much as they do for games like Splatoon, they'd probably be in a much better place.
Also note that traditionally Japan doesn't like gaming in first person view and much prefer the the third person view, so Splatoon is appealing to the Japanese market nicely in that way
First real new Nintendo IP in ... what? A decade probably, and people are lining up to take a look? Who would have thought Oo
In other news:
"12. [XBO] Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness (5pb., 05/28/15) – 4,593 (New)"
Never expected to see a X1 game list here, but then it IS psycho-pass. Anyways, I hope Splatoon sales stay strong, and that it also did/ does well over here. Last but not least, plz bring that psycho-pass game west ... someone!
It's a miracle!
So much for Splatoon not being a system seller.
Is that an Xbox One game on that list?
@Azooooz Don't even go there...
It is such a shame that the Wii U has sold like it has and gets overlooked like it does from developers it is such an AWESOME SYSTEM I love the gamepad and the browser as well the Video chat works great there really are some great features to the Wii U it is so much nicer in terms of features compared to the PS4 and xbone in my opinion.
@AVahne
It most definitely is fun for Nintendo only fans! But what's more- this game is fun for any gaming fan.
I need look no further than myself to see what Nintendo games appeal to me as a fan of all games. And this one tops the list. Honestly, I kid you not, I have never actually played a shooter that was funner than Splatoon.
@Hy8ogen
Take it you live in Canada? Ya know, I have Gamers Club Unlocked with 20% off all new games. And here it's only $60, so $48 after discount (+ tax = $50.63). Not sure what the conversion rate would work out but if you paid for the game and shipping I'd be happy to order you a copy and send it to you. Probably wouldn't end up being MUCH cheaper, but at least $10-15
This is good for two reasons: It's helping the Wii U move systems, and it proves that new IPs can do well. Shame the same didn't happen with Codename Steam and Wonderful 101...
@NintendoFan64
The difference is marketing (Splatoon had a great marketing strategy and was sold on Black Amiibo Friday in US), and the ability of IP to actually... well... sell.
Wonderful 101 and Codename STEAM (while great games that I own) do NOT have universal appeal. The characters and gameplay are not appealing to a broad audience.
Splatoon on other hand, has broad appeal. My Wife is a great barometer of the casual gamer, and she liked the Splatoon characters/music/etc and could understand the gameplay "paint ground or each other like paintball" concept (unlike W101 or STEAM).
Nintendo recognized this and put it's money on the best bet for a new IP.
@Will-75 I wish it was a blu-ray player. The game pad acting as a remote would have been a nice feature.
@JaxonH With conversion it'll be around 62 CAD, which is indeed cheaper if you do not factor in shipping fee. However I do appreciate the gesture buddy.
That's pretty good considering not too many games have been doing great in Japan these past few weeks, and a new IP during this period selling that well is definitely good news for Nintendo.
@TromboneGamer I think that is a big reason for a lack of voice chat. Everyone seems to assume it is because Nintendo wants to protect the children. That may be part of it, but Nintendo wants the game to be global, not dominated by anglophones... Anyway, shooters are really really niche in Japan, so it is good to see Nintendo's cartoon shooter doing well.
Don't know how leggy it'll be but just the fact that it's selling this much out of the gate is really good news. Now we just need those North America numbers but it's already looking good so far for Splatoon's future as a staple IP.
Nice!
Well deserved for Splatoon! And nice Wii U boost there!
Now, if Nintendo would introduce Splatoon Wii U bundle as well as a price cut, the Wii U might do well for the rest of this year! They also should have a deal with Capcom to secure Monster Hunter X for Wii U, making it cross play with 3DS version.
Not surprising. The Wii U finally have enough games to be a good buy for almost any kind of gamer. Maybe Splatoon will make people realise that.
@hiptanaka Yeeeeeeeep.
