The Super Mario franchise isn't renowned for its complex storytelling; in fact the old joke goes that when reviewing one of the plumber's platformers you can cover off the plot in one line - "it doesn't really matter". Be that as it may, the opening scene of a new Mario game can, nevertheless, set the tone for the platforming frolics that are to come.
They also show how the series has evolved, in both dramatic and subtle ways. This compilation from the GameChap channel caught our eye today, then, as it simply brings all of the intros together - from NES and Game Boy through to 3DS and Wii U.
No doubt this will be done many times in the future, too, but with this year bringing the 30th Anniversary of the franchise it's worth a look to see how it's changed over three decades. Check it out below.

... gosh, I am so, so very old.
@Shiryu I would have preferred editing. Everybody is old after watching that
@shigulicious Nah, its great as is, brings back great first play memories.
Wow, that just brought back a ton of memories I never even knew I had.
And for the record, Bowser stealing the entire Mushroom Kingdom Castle is beyond epic
I have many fine memories of the Game Boy games
Wow... I've been missing out...Too the eshop!
Still playing all Mario's games
The intro to Super Mario Galaxy is so EPIC!
Princess Peach needs a long talking to from Germaine Greer given her extended history in the role of anti-feminist heroine...
@ROBLOGNICK
The whole game is epic
The quality of the Super Mario 3D World compared to the rest of the 3D games is just incredible, now i need to see an HD Super Mario Galaxy game.
Super Mario Galaxy had, by far, the best intro. I just loved the UFO carrying away Princess Peach's castle like that.
How did the Yoshi's Island theme song get short changed? Such amazing music in that game!!
Well, they messed up right off the bat; the intro screen in Super Mario Bros. (and others) is completely silent. I thought everyone knew that.
My guess is that this was done to eliminate confusion from viewers who wouldn't know any better... but whatever.
