Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed to investors that the company is working on "unannounced" Wii U titles which will see release before April next year.
We already know about certain forthcoming Wii U games, but Nintendo traditionally saves something a little special for E3. Super Mario 3D World was announced and then released in a short space of time, as was Captain Toad: Treasure Trackerlast year.
Here's what Iwata had to say:
These are the already announced Wii U titles that will be released in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, and there are also unannounced titles that are not listed here. Among these titles, there are games that actively utilise the Wii U GamePad, including several we showed at E3 last year that are considered part of the Wii U GamePad utilisation project led by Mr. Miyamoto.
We already know about Mario Maker, Project Giant Robot and Project Guard - and there's the Wii U version of Star Fox coming, too - and these will all make good use of the GamePad's unique capabilities. But what else could Nintendo have in store?
Offerings from Retro Studios and Next Level Games are both likely at this year's E3, but exactly what have these western teams been working on? Your guess is as good as ours at this point - so why not let us know your predictions by posting a comment below.?

"F-Zero UX" or bust!
Alright I can be relieved, but are one of those games Metroid?
I'm sorry
Please be a console release for Pokken Tournament, or some form of Wii U Pokemon game.
C'mon new Geist game.
Nintendo finally focusing on the gamepad capabilities, about damn time.
Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, PLEASE
There's already a fair few games coming out, so I'm really excited to see what Nintendo has under wraps. I am expecting one of the Nintendo Garage teams to make an announcement of a new IP like with Splatoon.
Animal Crossing U with AC range amiibos along with Zelda range. I'd like to see Metroid though plus Luigi's Mansion HD and Sunshine HD.
I hope they announce a new Metroid (FINALLY!!!) and a new 3D Super Mario game (in the style of SM64/SMG . . . hopefully more like SM64).
I would also love a new F-Zero and a true sequel to Super Mario RPG . . . but I am not holding my breath on those 2.
Just one more month!
Mario Galaxy 3
I always thought E3 was so far away, until now. Now I realized it's gonna be big, and sooner than I had hoped!
Paper Mario please!
Animal Crossing U confirmed.
Fingers crossed new F-Zero made by Sega.
There's that old rumor that Retro is working on a new Diddy Kong Racing for Wii U... Maybe that will finally come to fruition... I would love to see it happen, but Nintendo seems so focused on Mario Kart 8 with all the DLC and updates that I wonder if they have a "Why bother with another kart racer for the system?" mentality now.
This article has made me upgrade my standard class ticket to a full on first class seat on this Nintendo E3 Hype Train chhoooo chhooo chhhooo
Devil's fourth. You heard it here first.
Until i see them in my hands or have a defined realistic release date, I will not believe them. They said the game drought would be over because of all the games they had coming.... and we still have game droughts and no games.
(Fire Emblem - Animal Crossing - sUper mario 3d Universe - Metroid - Luigi Mansion U - Monster Hunter 4 U - Bloodborne Wii U - jk - a guy can dream, right?)
Animal Crossing Wii U. Will be VERY surprised if this doesn't get some attention at E3. As a grown man in his late 30's, should I be this exicited for a video game? Haha. Star Fox is the only other game I'm really looking forward to right now. Couldn't care less about another Mario game. The 3DS definitely needs some love also. Looking forward to a nice surprise or 2 at E3.
Mario Galaxy 3D
There are quite a few games coming that I want to purchase. My personal Wii U life cycle probably will be complete with the release of Zelda U and SMT x FE. Any extras beyond those 2 and the releases we know about will be icing on an already frosted cake......speaking only for me personally of course
For those hoping it's a new F-Zero, just remember that Miyamoto said that he wanted the next entry to utilize pressure triggers like GX did. In that sense, a GX remake is very improbable because of reasons already listed. An F-Zero X remake for 3ds IMO seems pretty likely.
@ekreig Yoshi's Wooly World says hello though.
My daughters are screaming for Animal Crossing U
I have my hopes for Metroid and F-Zero.
A title I wished they would remade is Wave Race. Or a brand new one.
I have a very good feeling Retro is making a new Metroid. As for Next Level? I'd be okay with several projects from them. Luigi's Mansion 3, Punch-Out!! U, Pokemon Snap 2, etc. but I don't want a Mario sports game.
As for other E3 surprises, I'd love to see Paper Mario for WiiU. Also would like to see a true 3D Mario game in the vein of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy on WiiU at some point, though i doubt it will happen this year.
I still think the summer will be another retail game drought like last year, Yoshi for EU and nothing for NA. NoA will use the VC games they've held back for several months to lessen the drought (Metroid Zero Mission, FE Sacred Stones, Golden Sun 2, etc.)
2016 Legend of Zelda Christmas release confirmed...
Will Nintendo do a press conference or only a Direct ?
Wii U Music U
Super Mario Sluggers U (FYI baseball)
Super Mario Strikers U (FYI soccer/futbol)
Super Mario Sports Mix U
Paper Mario U
Nintendo Land 2 (amiibo compatible)
Pokepark 3
Subspace Emmissary 2 (w/ playable amiibo including the squidlings)
Edit:
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Wii U really is light on the sports games, isn't it?
So yes, Nintendo should have something unannounced for E3 shipping this holiday and Feb/March of next year b/c thats what E3 is for.
Who knows, maybe they'll even come up w/ something completly unexpected? Nah.
What? You didn't think that the blank void on the Q3/Q4 release schedule was final did you? Expect the whole schedule to be announced until Q1 2016 and a few surprises to be ready straight after the presentation!
@Grumblevolcano - Summer 2015 aka All Splatoon, all the time. The cynic in me even thinks they're drip relessing the main game piece by puece not b/c it isnt done yet but b/c they know they have nothing else so tney want to make it a summer long event until Mario Maker in Sept. So 1st we get 5 areas, then a little later tower defense, then friends matches, then later on ranked battles, on and on and on piece by piece. We are going to spend half our summer downloading, installing, redtarting and rebooting. They should have called it "Splatoon:Assemble" (thats a take on Avengers assemble BTW in honour of the movie.)
Fallout 4U exclusive to Wii U!
My gut tells me Pokemon Snap U.
@rjejr
That list is just awful.
But terrifyingly likely.
Metroid U is on E3.
Good to hear, but it doesn't surprise me at all. I've definitely been wanting more game announcements, so I'm looking forward to E3.
I hope so fervently it wont be Animal Crossing.
Thinking Pokken Tournament, Next Level Games, HD remaster, and animal crossing for Japan.
Fingers crossed for Animal Crossing!
@crimsontadpoles all I want is 3ds virtual console games, new 3ds release date, and mario kart 7 update for amiibo compatibility
@Tender_Cutlet Great name/picture!
I like his "before April 2016" line. Going by Wii U history, that means these games will be spread out over a 6 month period that includes April, but is mostly after it.
Are those games that Miyamoto is working on going to be a compilation/party game? The two shown @ last year's E3 did not look like they had too much depth. Maybe one of the unannounced games is going to be NintendoLand 2 or something like that.
We all knew that Nintendo had more cards up it's sleeves for E3.....and it makes for awesome-fun speculation!
@Quorthon I think people will take this as an opportunity to assume NX reveal in April 2016 with launch at holiday 2016.
@andrew20 I completely forgot that not everyone got the New 3DS. Hopefully they release it in your region soon.
Paper Mario U is rumored
Metriod - don't get your hopes up
FZero is not likely
Animal Crossing U everybody is talking about this.(I hope not).
Dragon Quest 10 - I lost hope
Maybe it's a GameCube remake. It's fast to make and at least it will sell a million .
Kirby air ride dlc for mk8
Faxanadu U or StarTropics 3
I don't care what they release as long as the games are fun and they work, also I don't the income required to get a Wii U or any of the other consoles as well.
@Quorthon - It started out as a joke, hence Wii Music on top, but then it took on a life of its own drifting off into its own scary reality.
I'm just thinking of Wii U as I do my other non-Sony consoles, mid-gen.
PS1 (Dec 98)
Dreamcast (July 00)
PS2 (July 02)
Gamecube (Sept 03)
Wii (Dec 06)
PS3 (Dec 08)
Wii U (Aug 13)
PS3 (Dec 14 - 2nd for my bedroom, kids are taking over the living room)
PS4 (prolly Dec 15)
My birthday is in July, you probably know what's in Dec.
Whatever it is, I hope it's an expansive 3D action-adventure or RPG. I couldn't care less about stuff like Animal Crossing and Mario sports titles. I'd be quite okay with Luigi's Mansion 3 or a new IP.
My dream would be a new 3D Donkey Kong game, though. Having just gotten to 101% on DK64, I can't help but think a sequel with modern game design sensibilities would just be the best thing ever.
@Warbeard thought I must be the only one who'd played through Dream Team Bros! Lol
Very good to hear, but honestly I'm hoping for third party releases, ones that I can be hype for.
So probably Animal Crossing, Pokken Tournament, whatever Next Level Games is working on, and an HD remake of a GameCube game.
Punch out? Paper Mario? It better be one of those two or i'm going to be really mad.
E3, here we come!
Metroid, F-Zero and Gamecube Virtual Console and WiiU will be the best Nintendo Console EVER!
I'm actually getting my hopes up for further partnership between Sega/Atlus and Nintendo. We might never get to see Persona 5 on Wii U, but we might see a new Trauma Center, or a Valkyria Chronicles 4.
Both titles would obviously make great use of the GamePad.
@rjejr You forgot Mario Golf U™ !
Camelot hasn't been shown working on a title lately, so you might get either that or a new JRPG which may or may not be Golden Sun.
Even though we "know" about project guard and project robot, i don't beleive these have been announced - so I expect it's these.
Keep your expectations in check, anything big would have been disclosed at the investors meeting.
@dkxcalibur More cards up its sleeve?
700+ Pokémon amiibo cards!
100+ Mario amiibo cards!
50+ Fire Emblem cards!
1 Please understand card.
Does it strike anyone else as odd that Nintendo is still looking to "fully utilize" the gamepad, nearly three years after launch? Shouldn't they have been doing that in the first place, thus showing the way to third parties to properly use it and maybe to greater success than it just being a map or item box display...
That said, any new game announcements will be very welcome as the release schedule is pretty dry. A lot of niche games and no real big sellers on the horizon. There are so many different things Nintendo could do... a new Paper Mario would be excellent, and supplement Mario Maker as part of a 30th Anniversary celebration. But If they don't unveil an Animal Crossing Wii U after nearly everyone and their mother has talked about it or wants it, I'll be very very disappointed.
Announce a proper Paper Mario 3 and an epic, AAA Metroid game and this gen will be redeemed for me. I'm not holding my breath for either though. And I'm certainly not trusting any dates or windows they give.
I hope they have some ground breaking new IPs on the way. I love all the existing and of course would like to see more Metroid, Star Fox, and F-Zero, but I'm ready for something new. (Yes I know Splatoon is new)
Quote Satoru Iwata : 'and these will all make good use of the GamePad's unique capabilities'.
I hope not.................
That is why the new Kirby is not selling very. Most gamers want HD games for the big screen. The Gamepad is a controller NOT a separate games console.
Why do Nintendo games now have to include use of the Gamepad, multiplayer and Amiibo's.
Where are the good single player games gone.
Why are people talking about Animal Crossing Wii U as if it's a thing?
I'm hoping for an Animal Crossing, although it would be time for a new Metroid. But you can't read into this too much, I mean technically Project Guard/Robot are unannounced titles, cause they don't have an official name yet.
And Retro has been working oooooonnnn:
Captain Rainbow Returns
@electrolite77 Gamecube had one, DS had one, Wii had one, 3DS had one, Wii U is a logical next step. The franchise also gained a lot of popularity since the 3DS version, would be a shame not to take advantage of that popularity, I think every casual player who owns a Wii U will buy it.
I'm feeling like they're gonna do Luigi's Mansion for Wii U dunno why, but just a guess...
Hopefully we get some "Fire Emblem: If" news at E3. I'm almost as excited for that as I am for Zelda U! (Almost...)
@JtotheY
Ah it's not based on anything that's been announced then? I wouldn't take it being on a succession of machines as any guarantee of a Wii U version, especially as it has a fairly small casual userbase.
I'm itching for another 3D World or an expansion similar to Luigi U. Just can't get enough of that Nintendo platforming!
Oh and as everyone has said, Animal Crossing U would be an instant buy.
Other than the ones we know about I think the following will be announced at e3
Wii U games:
Metroid
Animal Crossing
Fire Emblem Warriors (Like Hyrule Warriors)
Pokemon Tournament
Pokemon Snap
3DS Games:
F-Zero X 3D
Kid Icarus 2
Mario Galaxy 3D (NEW 3DS only)
DLC/Virtual Console
2x Smash Bros Characters (1 being Lucas)
5x Smash Stages
Shovel Knight 2
1x Mario Kart DLC
Smash Bros 64
Starfox 64/Lylat Wars
someone is getting REKT if there is no animal crossing: wedding bells.
Hopefully Metroid. The series is long overdue for a Wii U game.
Actively use the GamePad aka Project Robot the mini game and thats it.
There better be a Metroid/Luigi's mansion/Kid Icarus this year.
@ekreig Zelda being the exception.
My wish would be for a new Kid Icarus on WiiU. A new F-Zero partnership with Sega with 3DS cross compatibility would also be cool.
@Mercy_Lost
That would actually be one of the best things ever.
@electrolite77 nope, just hoping. Do think there's a lot of demand though
@vio you have no idea how badly I hope you're right. I'd LOVE another Diddy Kong Racing!
super mario Universe
@Bat-Moves98 I'm with you on the Desire for Fire Emblem IF! I wish we were getting it this year instead of 2016
@electrolite77 Animal Crossing is getting the House Arrest card game thing this year isn't it? Can't imagine a console version coming out this year either. That series seems better suited to a portable anyway.
@Sample_Text GX didn't use pressure triggers. (Not sure about the AX Controls). It works exactly the same whether you use the standard buttons or switch to the analog triggers (Which don't work in an analog manner).
Mario Sunshine HD
Zelda Four Swords Adventures HD (Using 3DSes instead of GBAs)
Star Wars Rogue Leader HD
at $40 each I'd buy all 3
Metroid for NN3DS along the lines of Hunters.
@TheWPCTraveler Exactly! Great response! Made me smile.
I would like to see strong announcements, but I believe it will be some sort of party stuff like Nintendoland and stuff like that.
The best announcement would be a pricecut.
Punch Out U confirmed?
Metroid Wii U!!!
Gamecube VC!!!
DO IT!
1: New 3D Metroid or Paper Mario with thousand year door style
2: Mario Galaxy 3 or Kid Icarus Uprising 2 for Wii U
3: Luigi's Mansion 3 Wii U or something else... F-Zero maybe?
I want all of those more than anything I know we won't get more than 2 of them though
And Gamecube VC PLEASE
It can't be a huge release otherwise we'd have heard about it's development already. My guess is something at a smaller scale and I'm hoping it's a Mario Strikers for the WiiU. The Wii game was such a refined game with great mechanics, balance, and fun too.
Hmm my wish list for 5 games unannounced ?
Metroid, Animal Crossing, PunchOut, F-Zero, Mario 64 HD remake
Yes! Can't wait!
@Shiryu
Amen to this! F-zero UX!
1. New Metroid
2. New F-Zero
3. New Paper Mario
PLEASE!
I'm hoping one of these is Animal Crossing U. My withdrawal from the series can't last forever!
While I would love for Retro to make another Metroid game, I hope they don't. I don't want them to be known as Metroid Team, I want them to do their own thing I think they earned it. As for Metroid, see what a different developer can do with it. Sure Team Ninja had a bad outing, but doesn't mean another developer couldn't do it justice.
Oh I'm expecting surprises. I always do.
Uhh, all he's saying is that there's some small unannounced games, like Miyamoto's little games. Not that there's a sack of hidden goodies waiting to be spilled open at E3. What a clickbait article.
I'd like to think that they would port over the luigis mansion arcade game for wii u. Shouldn't take to long to port over and it would be another quality release that people would lap up!
I still want Starfox Adventure 2. Still waiting.... I don't like the shooter version at all
Meh-troid: Other M II !!!!!!
@bizcuthammer @Vriess you guys nailed it for me. Both wave race and Luigis mansion 3 are games I would love to see announced. Also it's been quiet regarding eternal darkness since the branding was re copyrighted last year. The Wii u is crying out for more adult/horror games right now.....
New F-Zero please. Also hope that Next Level is working on the next in the Luigi's Mansion series.
@leo13
Yes me too. **sigh**, we'll just have to be patient.
@ShaunOfNintendo Metroid for the wii and gamecube acually sucked the only good metroid games were the ones for nes and snes sucka
Metroid, F-Zero, and Paper Mario. Calling it!
And possibly Animal Crossing U.
Will it be LOZ U😳
They always say that and is something not-that-great.
I thought "unannounced" in the title was a verb at first!!!! Can't work as a verb though.
Not long to go!!!
Here's hoping for a few surprised games.
..... & something Zelda infused. (Wii U zapper)
Would love it if Sunshine HD released. Can we also have all of the Rogue Squadron games on VC
I'd really like to see metroid and a new ip that's action or adventure based even project hammer resurrected would be cool.itd be nice to hear some news on art academy ,a new flipnote studio or the patent leaked last year for what looked like a wii u music game focused on multitracking, overdubbing etc.I think creation type software would really suit the gamepad alongside mario maker.
Yes please to all of the above.
@Neram
I don't know how you've come to that conclusion from anything in this article. The quote from Iwata says no such thing.
Endless Ocean 3 please. I want HD fish in HD water that's not Call of Duty.
There hasn't been any good looking water in any Wii U game so far, so a game focused on water should help alleviate that.
F-ZERO OR DEATH
#22 That list would be great!!
Well, my best guess would be several Minigames, kinda like Nintendo World, which is not even all that bad as those games are a blast with the right people around.
Then again, im hoping for some big titles to be shown as much as the next guy.
As for the F-Zero "analog leaning" discussion:
Why not use the gyroscope ? Many people already tilt the controller while playing racing games, this would be pretty intuitive.
And since its an actual gyroscope, not and accelerometer, the usual "wiggle controls" wont be an issue.
And for the gamepad itself, why not go the "Affordable Space Adventure" route ? As F-Zero Lore says, the G-Diffuser powers both, the vehicles booster and its shields.
This would create a "risk = reward" situation, if you could lower your shields on the fly to give your boosters more power.
But there are so many IPs left unused over the years and so many good ideas floating around that im pretty sure something worthwhile will come out if this.
And by the way, what about Retros "Secret Project" ? Is that still a thing that could happen, or was that a fluke ?
Because i still want to see a Metroid game, using a 3rd person view on the big screen for platforming an all that shenanigans while pointing the gamepad towards the screen switches into proper 1st person view for exploring. Pretty much an extension to what they tried to pull off with OtherM, just a huge bit more elegant and playable.
I figured that there was additional releases, too many holes in the schedule right now.
Mario Sunshine HD and a new F-Zero would bring me back to my Wii U.
A 'proper'** 3D Mario title this year would be nice, and as much as I like Galaxy, I hope it moves on to something more unique. N64 had SM64, Gamecube had Sunshine, and Wii had the Galaxy games. It would make sense for the next 3D Mario title to be something different.
**Proper refers to the argument that Super Mario 3D World can be considered this generations 3D Mario game, whereas I am referring to the games where you have missions in a large environment connected to a hub with no time limit and tons of exploration.
At this point all I care about is a new Metroid. Some J-RPGs would be nice and the much requested F-Zero sequel would pique my interest, but basically it's Metroid for me as far as U goes. Zelda is covered, Fire Emblem is continuing on the handled, and it hasn't been that long since Pikmin 3. Bar those three franchises, Metroid is the other one Nintendo IP I really love and care about.
Excitebike U. You heard it hear first
would love it to be an f zero game.
Mario Runners™ Wii U
Just like Mario Kart but on foot. Nintendo characters jogging on the track, beating each other up like Smash Bros to reach the finished line.
@A01
This article is proof that more games are coming besides what has been announced.
I don't quite get all the F-zero love, those new tracks in MK8 are by far the least intriguing. I don't know anyone who even played the gamecube game in it's hayday! mabye they should bring it to vc and see if it sells this time around before releasing a new game!
@ricklongo Yes, the wii U needs adventure and RPG games
BTW Is there any release date for Xenoblade X in the west, it is out in Japan and now that Zelda has been delayed it is the only game Im really looking forward to
@Mrclaycoat I'm totally with you on those requests
@NintendoFan64 4WEEEKKSSS!!!!!
Here's an unusual idea that's perfect for GamePad controls: Pokémon Snap! 2
a bran new Mario Tennis!!!
last fun one was released on Game Cube, we need a new version of it, it was so much fun (until they ruined it on the Wii with the new controllers)
@Alex16J You got your wish bud.
