It's tempting to look at Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition and say "pfft, just another match-three game". Well, it is, but this series also has a whole load of other aspects such as elements, teams and levelling to worry about. In fact, when having a go of the free demo in Europe we'll admit to scratching our heads between stages, slightly surprised at how many different things we had to look at.
For those that haven't played the demo or tackled the series on smartphones, Nintendo has published a handy video that introduces the core features, including upgrading team members and an overview of those slightly baffling status screens; it appears to have combined multiple previous videos into one package. All of this demonstrates that there's a bit more to this game - and the bundled Puzzle & Dragons Z - than some would perhaps expect.
Check it out below and let us know if you're tempted to pick this up on 8th May (Europe) or 22nd May (North America.

I'm really excited to give this a try!
Not interested at all. (Not even enough to download the demo).
I'm a sucker for those matching games, but this one looks a bit weird to me. Hopefully there is a demo in NA as I haven't purchased a 3DS game since last May and if I like this one, I may pick it up.
We are now a month away. I want to give this a try.
Defintely interested in this game, May appear like a wonderful month, starting with P&D and ending with Splatoon ^o^
But what worry me of P&D is not the complexity, that's a selling point even, but I wonder if this retail release is well balanced as it should. The original game have obvious excessive grinding and low dropping of rare stuffs cause the F2P nature, if Z and the Mario Edition didn't receive a good balance-fix then call me out ^_^;;;
Was just looking for the demo on the eShop. As Im in the US I didnt find it. Not that I need this, played PaD a lot 2 years ago on my iPod Touch. I probably wouldnt need to get Z but that Mario skin makes it seem like a new game.
I wouldnt be durprised at this point if my kids spend their moneyon 2 copies of this over Splatoon.
Well its been a while since puzzle quest so this should scratch that itch nicely....
I really like the original P&D besides the awful f2p scheme so I will pick this up.
Looks good! can't wait to get this.
Tried P&D on the phone, but it kept wanting to connect to the web and I was on an underground train. Frustrated me to the point that I stopped playing it. It did seem complex for a matching game, in a particularly Japanese way. Right now, there are plenty of games out there to fulfill my complex game needs (Monster Hunter and Xenoblade Chronicles come to mind). Just waiting for Splatoon to get that more arcade vibe going (although Smash does this nicely, people online are too good at the game, or sometimes have bad connections that frustrate me).
That Galaxy music better be in this game, lol
I played the demo a couple of times(wish it was a bit longer than 2 levels) and had a lot of fun with it, each time I played it I found the matching gameplay was even more in-depth than I originally pegged it for.
I'm looking forward to getting this on the 8th especially because there's no F2P elements.
Gusty Garden Galaxy in a handheld Mario title. I see where they're going with this.
I need to understand how this game works. On the demo on normal difficulty I am getting murked by the CPU.
@kobashi100 It's mostly to do with the number of combos you get. Every combo of a certain element lets those characters attack, and every match(even hearts) in a combo no matter the colour boosts the attack of every character by a percentage.
On Normal mode you need to make moves that will get you lots of combos at once and fufil the leader(Mario or Luigi's) special ability to boost damage even further.
It's a bit tempting to just move an orb to make one match of three but that deals tiny amounts of damage. You need to figure out pathways that will make multiple combos. I found this person's diagram on neogaf was good advice on how to move an orb to line up various combinations of three orbs of the same colour in a row.

Already have it preordered. I love Match 3 games.
I was already planning on buying it anyway.
have it pre-ordered and looking forward to this
This looks like it will be a nice, entertaining game. And Mario is a cool guy.
That's why this get's a 9/9/9/9 and XCX is 9/9/8/8 on Famitsu.
@DEAD
Yeah but the price wouldn't be cheaper. Both games are full price releases in Japan. This is a discount double pack.
@kobashi100
This put me off in the demo also, it just seems like the game was telling me I suck at this. It was punishing and it made me quit the demo.
I haven't stopped caring about this game though and I will give the demo another chance when I can give it more attention because it feels like you get a wall of text thrown at you and it's too much to take in.
Might be able to get the hang of it now I can go back and read that wall of text again after experiencing the gameplay. I can figure out where I'm going wrong maybe.
I am hoping that the demo has just made the player under leveled as it seems crazy.
CPU has a few hits on ya and you die easily.
@Dr_Lugae Props dude
@unrandomsam You don't even know if you like it. The whole point of demos is to see if you like it.
@kobashi100 It depends on the type of dungeon. For PAD on mobile devices there are a lot of dungeons where monsters can 1 shot you (usually event dungeons like "Descends" or end game dungeons). It can also happen when you first start playing PAD, if you just try to rush through earlier dungeons without leveling your creatures.
I need to download this, day one
Anybody else hear the Galaxy theme music and anxiously await a Rosalina reveal that never came???
Rosie or not, insta-buy for me!!!
tried the demo not shore about it now definitely different to other match puzzles 3 though
@Flopsy86 The demo doesn't give you a very good team actually, it's kind of hard to get through it with Boo Mario and his friends. Switch to Ice Luigi and you'll have a much better idea of the game difficulty.
I'm more interested in this than I would normally expect. I like match 3 games, and I like simpler RPG's, and I like Mario...
I loved Puzzle and Dragons it's super fun and requires skill and can be absolutely brutal but I'm totally stoked for this and Z.
I am kind of hoping the Mario version is a little easier and 'accessible' so they can get more people into it. The mobile game wasn't just match 3 to 5 gems and get a lucky cascade for easy wins.
