It was a long time ago that Nintendo announced a crossover for Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem, a collaboration between the big N and Atlus. The absence of updates led to speculation that the project was in trouble, with some doubting it would ever arrive.
It did make an appearance in today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, however, with confirmation that it's due to arrive on Wii U in 2016. It was described as "a truly modern RPG, where everyday life exists alongside a secret world of fantasy".
You can see the footage below - are you excited for this?

I JUST WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY. YOU'RE ALL DOING A GREAT JOB. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
It's about damn time. I was beginning to think this was dead--Project HAMMER dead. Very pleasing to see this has survived.
Though I'm wondering about the crossover part. Which characters will be have? From what games? What of demon hunting? M-rating or Teen-rating?
The trailer felt more like the Persona side of the SMT franchise than, say, SMTIV, which is what I was hoping for.
SMT all Persona alike, sold! Plus Fire Emblem, sold again!
Project HAMMER isn't dead, it's just resting with dual gamepad support.
So happy to see this game was not forgotten.
Seems cool.
How is this Fire Emblem? It looks like Rock Band combined with an anime. I'm not hating, that's a legitimate question. I see no Fire Emblem elements in this trailer??
@Quorthon - They took this out of mothballs to distract us from Project Guard and Project Robot not appearing. And so far 5 of the 9 Wii U 2015 games will NOT make their date. So maybe this will release in 2017, if ever.
Watched that entire video sure it was a 3DS game. Still looks like one.
Soooo.... Fire Persona Megami Tensei Emblem?
Really looking forward that one!
Is this Persona?Cause i see nothing of Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei,god.
I was more hyped before this trailer. The artstyle really doesn't fit with Shin Megami Tensei. Not sure what to think of this now.
I admittedly thought it was 3DS at first.
This looks great if you're not expecting an awkward crossover title. Can't wait.
Was really sad at first since I thought I'd be a 3DS game. But thankfully it's still on WiiU (those graphics are deceptive though). Anyway, finally some JRPG action on the WiiU together with XCX.
What does the girl say at the end?
@Kaze_Memaryu It seems to be heavily favouring SMT both in style and combat but I'm not complaining as I love both series.
Wait, I thought that was for 3DS! This is coming for Wii U? I very much enjoyed that trailer.
@Jazzer94 In terms of gameplay, so it would seem. But the artstyle is basically Fire Emblem with actual animé cutscenes.
It's a good thing they showed it to us now! I couldn't be happier. I was expecting that they'd either show it off at E3 or it'd be canceled.
Anyway, I'm confused as to what aspects from both series will be present, as it seems heavily similar to Persona, but I'll just remain patient. Maybe GameXplain will find something, haha.
I hated every bit of this. The music made me want to blow my brains out, there was very little Fire Emblem influence, and it looked like a 3DS game.
Lots of people hating on this.
I absolutely LOVE this! Can't wait for it to come out.
anime weeaboo game
I could die happy after hearing this(though I wouldn't want to cuz then I can't play the game lol).
Looks amazing! I'm glad it's not a crossover involving characters I don't know, and instead it's set in a totally new universe! I'm definitely going to be buying it now!
The game certainly looks different than what I imagined it would be. Looks pretty cool, gonna keep my eye on it.
Watching the Japan Direct, it seems this game will come out in 2015 in Japan.. Not 100% though as I can't read Japanese.
Some people are impossible to please.
I was blown away by the brief preview that we were given, and I knew immediately what it was when I noticed the anime aesthetic and the brief moments of Fire Emblem style combat. It looks part open-world, part tactical RPG, part dungeon crawler. I'm pumped.
getting it!!
I honestly thought this game was dead, what with the whole Atlus being sold fiasco, and nothing new for so long. It looks pretty great, but I'm not sure if I want it. I love Fire Emblem, but I'm not a big SMT fan (I never beat SMT4; I quit after being lost in the city for more than a few hours). This trailer looks closer to SMT than to Fire Emblem, but maybe there will be a Fire Emblem side too?
@rjejr
Were the "Project" games ever confirmed to be full games? They looked fun, but neither looked like it was worth even the budget price of $40. I expected them to end up in some sort of collection, or as eshop games.
And even if they're missing their original windows, at least most of the games are still due this year. Zelda's the only one that's officially delayed to next year.
@Kaze_Memaryu I can see the FE likeness at points but I just kept getting a Persona vibe.
I did even know this was Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem until Iwata said it is. Also seeing Atlus name at the start made me think it was a already Japan released game that is being localized.
2016 never looked so far away.
@Kirby_Fan_DL3
Like Fire Emblem: Awakening?
All I hear about that game is waifu fights.
The whole trailer I thought this was somehow a persona game. I'm a little disappointed in the direction they are taking. Doesn't look like something true to the fire-emblem franchise, starting with all females basically dressed as skimpy as possible.
I was blown away by this. It's like falling in love with Atlus all over again. Sure wasn't expecting it though.
With this and Xenoblade X, Wii U's future looks bright.
This doesn't look anything like Fire Emblem and more SMT. Even the combat looks like it's in 1st person, a major reason why I stayed away from SMT. I'm still going to get it because I'm sure Nintendo has a big say in it and will be a great game.
I noticed few elements of fire emblem, since we don't know nothing about it's battle system anyways, I will wait to see more of it about it's gameplay... interested though
I really liked the trailer! I've enjoyed pretty much all of the Persona, SMT, and Fire Emblem games I've played, so I'm sure I'll love this, regardless of which series will have more influence.
Glad to see it didn't die.
Um...I didn't spot a single Fire Emblem character....
0:37 Holy smokes. Is that Chrom?
@rjejr
It actually looks a lot like Persona 5, albeit not quite as refined. It's the art style though that gives it that particular look.
I will say, I was expecting Fire Emblem gameplay in an SMT setting, but it appears to be the other way around. Well, not exactly. It appears to be an entirely new type of battle system, but in RPG nonetheless. Not a SRPG.
I thought that would be disappointing, but, after seeing the footage it's strangely not. This does actually look good.
Well, @rjejr was right about Smash Bros. For Wii U, so he's right about everything. All hail the master soothsayer @rjejr!
That's good, I was starting to worry about this game.
Senran Kagura X Akiba'Strip
But really, This is SMT and FE crossover? even the last FE trailer looked more SMT than this, even Persona series doesn't look that generic.
@AlexSora89 "Zettaini nigasunai!" (ぜったいににがすない!) — "You definitely won't escape!"
Anyway, I'm crazy crazy excited for this game. 2016 can't come soon enough.
@Tsurii897
I managed to recognize it almost right away due to the company logos and because I am absolutely crazy about the series ever since Melee came out (even though all they had FE-wise in that game were two characters and a music track )
Definitely hyped!! Day one for sure
I'll reserve judgement until I actually see what the gameplay looks like, but I am lost as to where Fire Emblem is supposed to come into this so far. I've never played Persona or SMT (nor could I tell the difference between either one) so I'm hoping I start to see a little more FE influence. Aside from that, I have no idea what's supposed to be happening in the trailer and I can't stand the overtly skimpy clothing the female characters have.
Overall, I'm confused and I feel like I know less about the game now than I did before.
This looks way too anime to please Fire emblem fans such as myself, I just can´t see fire emblem in this. I´m much more hyped for the 3DS iteration, that game literally is just balls to the wall.
I know I'm about to get flamed for this, but the graphics was kind of...no scratch that...it WAS underwhelming compared to what the Wii U can do. I know, I know graphics isn't everything. I just didn't expect it to look like a Wii game. However I'll still be picking this up. They still have plenty of time to polish up the game. I don't want to criticize too heavy. My apologies if I offended anyone.
@Senario Yeah, but there´s an abismal difference between inspired in anime and totally anime, now, don´t get me wrong, I like anime, but this style they particularly used just doesn´t fit the typical fire emblem artwork. I love awakening, and yes, the character models are anime-esque, but it also appeals to western audiences. I just don´t see the appeal in this, I think that the 3DS game will be a much superior game and overall better experience, but that´s just me.
As someone who has never played a Shin Megami Tensei game and has failed to get into the Fire Emblem series (they seem such lovely games, but I'm terrible at grid based RPGs), I have no idea what half the stuff that appeared in this trailer was about.
That said, it does intrigue me, and the combat system looks like a more traditional turn based combat system than that of Fire Emblem. I may see about getting this, depending on further news of course.
It's completely different to how I expected it to be but it's great x3
I love this crazy company to death!
I Definitely NEED this game.
@Souldin As an avid fan of both SMT and FE, I also have no idea what that was about... I am still a little excited but I am also disappointed. I was expecting something completely different.
Looks great! A definite highlight of the direct. Bring it on.
That was definitely not how I expected the game would be like, I was expecting more of SMT: Devil Survivor type gameplay. Looks like core SMT, Persona and FE aesthetics combined all in one.
Still hard to see the FE elements, but this definitely has me interested again. Just hoping the game is amazing and we get loads of FE characters.
seems like an SMT/Persona game with very little Fire Emblem, which isn't what I want. They said "Fire Emblem characters", which makes it sound like Fire Emblem won't impact gameplay. shame
@TrueWiiMaster - "Were the "Project" games ever confirmed to be full games?"
Well that pic was tweeted by Nintnedo of America w/ the words "upcoming Wii U games", so NOA must have thought they were real games
And why bother having "1st half" next to some games and not others if they are going to release in the 2nd half, why not just list "2015"? They just have too many delays and not enough Wii U games releasing to take up the space.
@JaxonH - My kid watched the vid w/ me twice and he says it looks like a 3DS game as well.
The first few times I saw the oringal Kid ICarus Uprsing trailer (waaay back when) I thought it was a Wii game, didn't think 3DS could pull off something that good looking, so it does go both ways. Graphic style certainly plays a part.
@IronMan28 - That reminds me, did they mention the Miiverse level, torunies, or sharing in the vid, I missed the first 10 minutes? Probably not, but TW had mentioned it in his article earlier so I was thinking it might be in here.
@JubilifeRival based on the trailer this is HEAVILY SMT with FE stuff making appearances. Couldn't help noticing a certain boss that looked like Marth. So it'll be SMT where everything is FE inspired. Heck, I wouldn't doubt it if the protagonists have to beat up bad versions of the FE characters to gain their abilities or something like that (looking at the MC guy wearing the Marth-like stuff)...
My hype is super real.
@ALEC_EIFFEL but the main character cast shown are original SMT characters.. I am under the belief they call upon the power of FE characters for combat, with some FE characters popping up as bosses in demonic form.
@Nimious look more carefully. Also in my above post is my speculation on the matter.
@lazyinsu it is. Around October-December I believe.
I personally prefer both the early Fire Emblem and early SMT character designs over these newer, more simplified character designs... Then again, I tend to prefer more detailed designs in general- this particular homogenous style shown here is not a favorite of mine. It cuts corners to save time, and shows a hatred of noses. What's up with that!?
Looks like Persona, which is great, since I love Persona a lot more than Shin Megami Tensei main series. Plus Fire Emblem which is my favorite franchise ever. I'm can't die before playing.
I prefer the mainline series and the older spinoffs over the Persona series and newer spinoffs. I suppose it was too much to ask for a modern version of a Majin Tensei sort of game... (Majin Tensei was an old SNES SMT spinoff series that basically featured Fire Emblem style titles mixed with iconic SMT settings, mechanics, and characters.) I would have much preferred to see that, instead of this. Oh, well... I know they decided upon the Persona angle because it sells better. I guess we'll see how this turns out.
This is not what I was expecting. AT ALL. Honestly, kind of disappointed with the style and time period chosen, but there's pretty superficial so I won't make any rash judgements yet.
My comment about the game being "anime weeaboo-ish" was meant to be a joke, just so you know...
Meh... I'm sure a lot of people are excited but I haven't really ever gotten into FE or SMT. I'm sure they are great games but I just have found the urge to play them. Shame on me I guess.
Btw I'm not really a fan of the art style chosen.
Why does crossover automatically require characters from the two series? Can't crossover also mean we're taking stuff from this series and stuff from this one and mashing it up into something different?
Guessing Fire Emblem is the fantasy side of the game, somewhat like how Disney is the fantasy side of Kingdom hearts if you get what i mean.
happy non-the-less
Just drop the music here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KqOk-9RTHs
Persona was the first impression I got as well, which is a huge surprise, and a good one. I'm looking forward to this more now!
Yes, along with Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox U, Fatal Frame V, Mario Maker, Devil's Third, and the New Legend of Zelda, now I can finally add Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem to this list.
@B3ND3R If this is suppose to be a cross-over and I will need to pay close ATTENTION to find FE characters then something has gone terribly wrong.
The original trailer gave both series equal time on screen, this one if FE characters are actually in this is clearly not putting them on display.
Whether your theory is true or not, that's a terribly poor excuse for a cross-over.
Entirely too japanese for me, but it sure does look like quite a ride!
@Senario Ugh... Fire Emblem is not known for its generic classes, nor fighting styles so seeing those things doesn't lead me to associate Fire Emblem with this game. It leads me to say they've copped out on the Fire Emblem part of this supposed crossover...
Original trailer showed characters of both universes, that clearly hinted at more than this.... Particularly shown were the notable heroes of various FE games but instead this is essentially SMT with a minor twist of FE. That's fraudulent.
What is there to be excited for? Fire Emblem is a tactics game at its core. That's clearly not going to be here. Am I going to see the weapon's triangle? Terrain bonuses? Perma death? The earlier reports of this game was that the development teams had plenty of conflict over the direction of the game and its easy to see why now.
@Frank90
Then make sure to eat right and look both ways before crossing the street . Like some people, I am a little surprised by the choice in art direction but I'm so pleased the project isn't canceled. I guess all my Nintendo fanboy "Nintendo wouldn't sweep this game under the rug, go back to Neogaf and patiently await the next souless SE release!" actually paid off. Haha!
I was blown away by the trailer, and absolutely adored the music; I'm not a SMT fan, but I'll sure check this out!
Hmmm... Where's the Fire Emblem?
The music is very Persona 4 which is cool.
Awww, I watched the trailer again on the Wii U eShop, and it says they expect an M rating for the game. That's disappointing, as I don't play M rated games. Can't they edit it enough to get it down to a T rating without really affecting the game itself?
WAIT. I thought this was a 3DS title
Persona is a hugely popular SMT spinoff ... its hardly surprising they're using characters from that universe rather than (as expected) those from SMTIV.
@Nimious Dude, you have gotten PLENTY of Fire Emblem stuff recently. I for one couldn't be happier that we're getting a Persona game for Wii U finally, with some Fire Emblem elements. I was blown away with excitement!
Crossovers are never a 50 50 split, you have to realize that. That and the game is clearly being made by primarily by Atlus, so of course they're gravitating to the Persona/SMT side of things. Besides this is ONE trailer of a (probably) 100+ hour game that's coming out god knows when, they haven't shown off everything. So cool your jets!
This game looks so COOL! I really liked what I saw, but in the beginning I didn't think what I was watching was the new Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. So glad to see that project isn't dead, and the ability to walk around on foot as if it was an Atlus game has me intrigued. Just having to go across a battle grid and having no actual control of your characters in the Fire Emblem games can sometimes be a drag, so I believe this will liven things up. Good stuff for sure.
@R_Champ
Don't even remember, how long was the time between reveal and yesterday trailer? Actually this game was one of the main reasons to buy my Wii U.
April Fools?
If real, I may finally get a Wii U.
I'm glad to see the hype for this game in here. Personally, I don't get it but I hope it exceeds your expectations!
I was a bit disappointed mostly because I wasn't expecting this AT ALL. I assumed a dark theme with actual FE/SMT characters. But this is also my most hyped game during the presentation. I hope to see more news at E3.
@rjejr
I told you guys, Project Guard and Giant Robot were never considered actual games--they were tech demos for E3 and, at best, will be incorporated into StarFox as noted by Miyamoto himself.
Nintendo fans love that 2015 game list and repeatedly acted like it was a stone cold fact carved in marble in ancient Greece and I'm still not clear if that was even made by Nintendo. If it was, then it's a corporate decision to make the company and Wii U look stronger, and it's hard to blame them for that kind of hyperbole. That's what corporations do. If not, then per my suspicions, it was made by someone else trying to stack the schedule to make Nintendo look better at a time when they generally look pretty awful.
Either way, Nintendo has been particularly bad at delivering games in a timely manner this generation--worse than they've ever been before. There was some interesting stuff, but I found nothing exciting. I was very happy to see Fatal Frame getting localized, but I'm reaching a point where it takes a lot more to bring me back to the Wii U.
Hell, the upcoming eShop games they showed--many of them have already been available elsewhere for ages. Octodad was a launch title for the PS4--or a launch-window title at the very least.
@BioOrpheus
I was also expecting more in the vein of the dark atmosphere that hovered over Shin Megami Tensei IV and Fire Emblem Awakening. This looks like a Japanese anime pop-music carnival.
OMFG LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD WORK GUYS!!!
WTF is this? Pretty disappointed.
@Quorthon - "I told you guys, Project Guard and Giant Robot were never considered actual games" "and I'm still not clear if that was even made by Nintendo" "then per my suspicions, it was made by someone else"
If they were NEVER considered actual games then why are they on the list? The list that came out nearly 3 months after E3 was over.
Why did Ninteod of America tweet it out? It's the first documented account of that list. If you can find an earlier source for it than Nintedo of America then please share it with us. Why is it still readily available on their twitter feed? Why not take it down if it was a joke or somebody else made it up?
I can understand you not thinking those 2 tech demos were likely to ever be released as games, heck The Last Guardian and Half Life 3 haven't even released as games yet, but denying that Nitneod made that list when all evidence points to them and there is not a shred of evidence or hint of it being a rumour or lie? Why persist trying to deny the obvious? That I don't get.
"#HyruleWarriors kicks off a steady stream of new #WiiU games through 2015. What game are you most excited about?"
https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/statuses/506487150125535235
And here's a bunch of links attributing it to Nintendo of America's twitter feed. Do you have even one source that says somebody else did it? One?

So please, show me who made that list, other than Ntinedo of America. Show me WHY you have your "suspicions". The only fact carved in marble in ancient Greece is your denial of the obvious and inability to admit when you were wrong.
stubborn < bullheaded < Quorthon
@AlexSora89 She said: I won't run no matter what.
@rjejr
I'm betting we get that info at E3. Can't show all their cards in a Direct 2 months before the expo right?
But I agree with you. When Nintendo shows a game, it's real. It may not release exactly when we expect or want it, but I've never seen an announced game get canned in a long time. Everyone said Yoshi's Yarn was cancelled, yet it releases this year. Then everyone said SMT x Fire Emblem was vapor ware, yet it's getting a Japanese release this year.
Those gamepad games were created by Miamoto, and they'll see a release. My guess is they'll be released digitally on the eShop, in the vein of Pushmo World, Dr Luigi and Tipping Stars.
@JaxonH - Or free like Face Raiders.
But more likely in the vein of the new DLC friendly Nintendo, $7.99 each, both for $11.99. But I don't think they were ever going to be full retail titles. And Nintendo recently sold parts of Kirby Triple Deluxe off as separate games, fighting and drumming, don't recall the titles, so theoretically they could both be in Starfox and sold separately. Nintendo is certainly expanding the way it distributes games.
@rjejr
It's definitely possible. Wouldn't surprise me anyways.
I am a big JRPG fan. Modern RPG even more. I love FE. I love Persona. This looks more PersonaxFE than SMT. Granted, I havent played a SMT but plenty of Persona. I dont care if this isnt literally a crossover of FE or SMT, I am ecstatic that there is a JRPG title on a Nintendo home console!!
It is way too soon for people to be bashing this game. I am sure with more Nintendo Directs, the FE and SMT elements will be revealed for this game.
This game had me at "..everyday life exists along side a secret world of fantasy..".
@Quorthon the game is anticipated to be rated M for Mature by ESRB.
@Frank90
I think it was about 2 years and 3 months ago (January 2013): I remember them revealing Xenoblade Chonicles X at the same time. The only difference is XBX has gotten a lot of press time...this is only the second time they mentioned this game since it's original trailer O_O. And definitely the only footage we've gotten. Here's hoping the wait was worth it . The last handful of Nintendo console JRPGs were amazing (sadly, it was only a handful though ).
I'm going to take a week off when this and FE:if drop.
After watching the trailer a few more times (muted) I still don't get why people think this looks good.
@datamonkey
@Nimious
Watch this video for the revelation of one:
@BieberBlows This game was not made to look good, it was made to play good. We're not here for a movie, we're here for the game.
@retro_player_22 ...Okay..there's some kind of Tiki in the game.
I played Shadow Dragon, that's not even what Tiki looks like. You also do not need to recruit Tiki in that game. She's no where near as recognizable as any of the main characters of Fire Emblem in the past decade.
@whodatninja Uh huh. I got hype for the crossover when it was first announced but this hardly a crossover. Just because there's another Fire Emblem game I'm suppose to be what? Happy about this?
This is not 50/50 so far it looks like 99/1. Just because Fire Emblem classes which are generic classes in fantasy games make an appearance that's hardly the same as incorporating distinct Fire Emblem mechanics.
So far the Fire Emblem aspect looks like a complete after thought that or Atlus does not understand what Fire Emblem fans like about Fire Emblem because this trailer clearly didn't show it.
There's nothing Fire Emblem about this, all it is is a lie.
@retro_player_22 I should have worded my post differently because I wasn't talking about the generic anime artstyle or the crappy looking battle scenes, I should have said turn out good.
Anticipated to be rated M? Seriously Nintendo, can we keep Fire Emblem rated T. Comon, you guys are supposed to not do this stuff. Destiny trailers also said the same thing though, so who knows.
Generic, anime style characters?
Check.
Over the top battle sequences?
Check.
Gaping fan service?
Check.
Wasteful use of two series in order to replace the absence of Persona 5 on the Wii U / Nintendo systems?
Check.
And that, folks, is all this boils down to.
Nintendo not getting Persona 5 and so Atlus is milking the name Fire Emblem for a quick cash grab.
It'll probably sell systems, so that's great, but for me (and it sounds like many others) it will be just one more Atlus game to 'tarnish' their rep.
As if selling out to Sega, pumping out a half dozen Etrian games (a chibi one and two remakes, seriously?), rushing SMTIV (the map, my god) releasing slow, dull, and boring Code of Princess (the slowdown is atrociously bad), SMT's re-releases, 3 versions of Persona 4 and a rather underwhelming P5 weren't enough.
Nintendo has the clay and yarn games, the builder and editor games, Splatoon and a fully open world Zelda coming (or recently released). For all the flak Nintendo takes for rehashing the same characters, at least those characters work in multiple games. Atlus has 3 games: Persona, SMT and Etrian. And every deviation they've made is an absolute flop.
I shouldn't be this surprised, I'm just sad I hyped my friends on this game so much, only to get.. THIS.
When Atlus can bring out a NEW idea with a good storyline and better gameplay, call me.
Otherwise, hold my calls.
On the other hand, the generic looking FEif looked 10x better after the relative banality of the first trailer was explained away with the details in the second. Splatoon is a small download and looks phenomenal and a lot of fun. Wooly Yoshi has hands down the best amiibos. And what's that.. Fatal Frame V is being localized?? Yeah, Atlus just got shelled on this Direct. Hopefully the strategy, maturity and plot of older SMT / FE titles shows through, instead of.. THIS.
@Nimious I'm sure once we see more of the game all the characters will reveal themselves. Having them reveal ths early in a trailer will probably spoil a lot. Also this is just an early trailer, Nintendo probably saved a more in-deph trailer or maybe even a playable demo for E3 2015. Just cuz there's one character for now doesn't mean there won't be more, just hope that it doesn't end up like Project X Zone.
Also this game isn't the first time Nintendo does crossover with a third party franchise, Pokemon did the same with Samurai Warriors for Pokemon Conquest as well and it turns out great. Never judge a game by its early preview. As for Tiki, who care if she's important or not, she's in the game and she's a Fire Emblem character.
@Jaz007 Despite this game had Fire Emblem characters in there, this game will be developed by Atlus which why a lot of the Fire Emblem characters will look like Shin Megami Tensei characters.
