Lego Dimensions - Lego's much-rumoured Toys To Life concept - has finally been officially revealed.
Set in a world where an evil force has created rifts between the various Lego worlds, the title effectively allows developer TT Games free reign to pick and choose from Lego's vast selection of licenses, and pull them all together in one place.
Warner Bros. has issued the following statement regarding the franchise, which will be coming to the Wii U, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One:
A small sample of packs available in 2015 include the Back to the Future Level Pack with a LEGO Marty McFly minifigure, a Lego Ninjago Team Pack with Kai and Cole minifigures, three Ninjago Fun Packs with Jay, Nya and Zane minifigures, two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg minifigures, three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs with Lego Gollum, Lego Gimli and Lego Legolas minifigures, four The Lego Movie Fun packs with Emmet, Bad Cop, Benny and Unikitty characters, and a The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with a Lego Wicked Witch of the West minifigure.
Additional packs to round out the 2015 assortment will be announced in the months leading to launch. Further waves of expansion packs will be released regularly following the launch of the game and into 2016.
Future expansion pack purchases will continue to work with the Starter Pack, even in the fall of next year. No compatibility chart necessary.
The game's Starter Pack contains a copy of the game, the Lego Toy Pad (for interacting with the NFC toys), three minifigures (Batman, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Wyldstyle from The Lego Movie), some bricks and a Lego Batmobile vehicle. The game launches on September 27th in North America and September 29th in Europe.

I enjoy the Lego games a lot so I'll be watching for this.
Does this mean Marvel & DC crossover?
@Dipper723 One can hope.
@Dipper723 Nope. I don't think the Marvel Characters were in the Lego Movie but the DC characters were, so my bet is that we won't see the Hulk Vs Superman.
Sounds kind of like Disney Infinity but with Lego instead. Will keep an eye out for it. My kids might like it.
@Dipper723 Possible, but unlikely. Marvel is owned by Disney who already have Disney Infinity. This Lego thing is a direct competitor to that so it's not really in Disney's interests to support it.
I'm hyped
LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER PACK FEAUTRING CHASE MCCAIN
@Dipper723 - Ooh, nice thought. Throw in a little thing called Star Wars, and a bunch of dinos from Jurrassic Park, and they'd really have something.
Is it just me, or are there more Lego games than Wii U games this year? Not counting Lego games on Wii U obviously, just Wii U games not involving Lego.
Wait, maybe its a tie
Splatoon May Mario Maker Sept Yoshi Fall
Jurassic June Dimensions Sept Avengers Fall
Well whatever, I dont think @Quorthon will be too excited about this one, the whole game is on disc DLC apparently thru all of next year. Maybe if they get Optimus in the game?
Not sure about this one, but only b/c I have no USB ports left bewtween my Disney Infinity and Sklyanders portals. Maybe if they make the portal wireless.
OK, time to go watch the vid w/ my kids.
DAIMN!!! This is such a MUST BUY for me as Lego and Skylanders fan XD LEGO!!! TAKE ME MONEY!!! XD
Holy shit, please make it like in the trailer and let us build our own portal!! The possibilities.... ENDLESS!!!
Okay, yep. This "toys to life" stuff is definitely the "plastic instrument music game" fad of this generation.
@rjejr: Indeed, I have no interest in this. I'm also just not a big fan of Lego games. My kid inherited all the Legos my brother and I had as kids, so he's got a pretty massive collection, and I'd rather just sit with him, building stuff.
Yes, looks great and will be a massive success !
Why me! Or should I say why my wallet instead? I know my sons will want this for sure. They both Love lego toys. They both loved the Lego Movie. They both love the Lego games. So I'm going to guess that they will go nuts when they see this trailer. The release falls right between their August & October birthdays too.
However, between the Disney Infinity, Nintendo Amiibos, and now the Lego toys, I'm going to need to figure out a different storage solution before my wife kicks the three of us out of the house.
So...much...flipping.... Videogame portal toys...
I just hope this doesn't kill off the regular Lego games, but I have a bad feeling it will. Was looking forward to The Simpsons game which was surely on the way soon.
NEED IT. Two of my major hobbies colliding in a beautiful way.
I've seen shelves buckling with disney infinity toys what will draw people to this over that? Or even over real lego?
Want more details and footage but I'll keep my eye on it.
In related news, my 7 year old son just had his first orgasm.
So after the watching the vid w/ the 10 year old - we have a winner!
And personally I was impressed by what looks like Sauron's tower in the middle of a city. And isn't that guy in almost every commercial on tv?
And that spot for the vehicles is a nice addition. The rumour was Skylanders would have vehicles last year - see our buddy Andy Robertson he covered it a bunch - but looks like this puts Lego in the lead.
Man this could be huge. I know we're over saturated w/ "toys to life" but this is Lego we're talking about, Lego is eternal. Well except for that pink girl oriented Friends line, that died quick.
@Peach64 - Having played both Skylanders and Disney Infinity Idon't think this will kill the normal Lego games. Lego games are all about the story driving the game forward, like Syalnders . This looks like Dinsey Inifnity's story box mode, where you just build stuff and run around in it. They say there's a story about a bad guy in a helmet - Darth Vader? - but I think that's just an excuse for inter-dimensional rifts, like the dad in the Lego Movie.
@Quorthon - but imagine building Lego w/ your kids, and then playing w/ them in a video game? We once built a 3 foot tall operational catapult (ouf of Trios, but close enough) we used to play Angry Birds. Now they mostly just make rail guns.
More original then yet another movie game....although......would really love a stand alone Back to the Future Lego game.
They're not Amiibo's though right? They have to interact with it's own "pad" instead of the Wii U gamepad.
I'm mixed on this. I can't do another, yet Infinity is probably getting Star Wars and Legos probably won't, right? Or maybe Disney will double dip or not have a choice since LEGO already has a license for toys and video games?
Really don't know what to think, but two toys-to-life lines is more than enough for this family. I'm feeling saturated with games as it is.
@rjejr
Sounds more like the adventures themselves are about rifts between the LEGO worlds so they'll be able to mix all characters in all adventures. Should be fun. Ironically, there is no mention of a Toy Box style area to BUILD things. I sort of wish they had a way to integrate regular legos more. There is some progress in this area with that other line of LEGOs, but that would definitely make me sit up and take notice. If I could build something physically and have it appear in the game and really do things with it. This doesn't look like that at all, sadly.
Wii U version, though! Yay!
@rjejr Would be funny if it would be Lord Business XD But maybe it is a new one, which would be great as well, because this could spawn a new toy series.
@Bushido_Fai Yep, it has its own portal, but this time, it looks like you can build yourself a portal with Lego bricks and maybe, you can build your very own portal =D
@DarthNocturnal
Minifigures are always pricey. Always. $5 for one generic unlicensed minifigure in a blind pack. Now stick a license fee on it and put a chip in it and put it in a nice package where the customer actually knows what they are getting and the promise of unlocking something in a game. I'm guessing $11 - $14 just like the others.
I'M SORRY WALLET
@jedisquidward That's the only way I'd be excited about this.
If they add in Dr Who I'd really be interested.
Aaaaaan there goes the rest of my money.
@rjejr
My son and I (mostly me) attempted to build a Jaeger as inspired by Pacific Rim. It stood around 14 inches high, but despite the number of pieces he has, we are still limited in what we can do, so it didn't look like any of them from the movie. But, the pilot seat was in the head.
I buy and hoard a lot of collectible gaming crap (I still have a StarFox Adventures air freshener and Pikmin temporary tattoos from the GameCube era), but even I have to draw the line at all these damn toys and portals.
Maybe they should make a Portal toy to life with a portal for the portals so you can portal on your portals.
I was disappointed with LEGO Batman 3 but this looks really cool. Hopefully it can revive the LEGO series. The thing is...it's $99.99...
love LEGO games so im really interested and its not coming to PC (witch is wonderful!) now i won't have a choice to get.
Looks interesting
No thanks, I already throw too much money at Amiibo.
Hey wait....aren't Lego already toys?
This could be a good thing, but I really wish Lego would have just made a unified game that doesn't require the toys to life or portal.
Getting it just for the Ninjago stuff.
OMG. IM FREAKING OUTTTT!!!
I want it. I want it. I want it.
Okay. Keep cool. Only get the franchises you want..... Crap that's all of them
No Chase McCain no purchase. Push your original IP among the cash cows, TT!
@Dipper723 One can dream but unlikely.
@MrGuinea: Yep. Game room full of Skylanders, Disney Infinity, Marvel Infinity and now Lego Dimension characters. Thanks to YouTube (and Evan), I cannot even hide this stuff from my kids anymore. DOH!
@aaronsullivan At the moment, it seems characters always come with a vehicle of some sort as well for £14.99 (so probably $14.99). They're called "Fun Packs". "Team Packs" are twice the price and come with 2 characters and 2 vehicles and then there are "Level Packs" at the same price as the Team ones with a character, vehicle and a level.
This is just from looking at the GAME website.
@Nik-Davies
The vehicle pack-in helps a bit, doesn't it. I read that the portal can read 7 items at a time so there will be opportunities for multiple gadgets and vehicles along with the characters all at once.
It is official. NFC is the new plastic music instruments. I'm out now.
@aaronsullivan Yeah, it looks like the portal has space for 2 players to have 3 things each in the L shape, so a character, vehicle and some other thing each. Then there's the circular one nearer the actual portal in the middle which is probably for the world, like Back to the Future. Just a guess.
Am I the only one that thinks the classic Minifigs looks terrible and outdated? The one thing I thought LEGO Friends did right was make better looking minifigs. I suspect I'm alone in this though...
@Ryu_Niiyama Haha, you're so right about this.
That's awesome!
@Captain_Gonru - Youre forgetting the Gamepad NFC reader is useless for gaming.
All the toy games not including amiibo need to be in constant contact w/ the portal, the Gamepad only reads once, which would make it very difgicult to swap vehicles and charscters and whatever else they come up w/ while 2 people are playing at once. Its probably possible w/ some extended menu sysyem and lots and lots of pause screens, but it would really cut into the experience. When my 2 sons play Skylanders they are constantly changing characters and I kerp waiting for the games to crash but it keeps going. Gamepsd isnt made for that.
Plus, you get to build the portal, how cool is that?
I can imagine we get this and stop w/ Disney Infinity and amiibo after Skylanders.
If Nintendo is planning any type of amiibo centric game, rather than just all the tack on nonsense, I'd suggest they not wait until E3 to show it off.
Oh good, more toys to take up the Nintendo section at stores. Seriously, Skylanders alone have more space than the Nintendo section at my local GAME -_-
Guess this also kills all hope for a Chase McCain amiibo ;-;
Loving the look of this and was considering getting it... Then I saw the price. The whole range that is already announced is £345 (current prices on GAME website) and given that they will release more throughout the year the cost would be rediculous.
I'm interested, but I honestly have lost interest in LEGO games starting with the last Harry Potter game. The LEGO games line has become way over-saturated, and yet have mostly lost part of their old magic, often taking themselves too seriously and adding annoying voice acting and making the games too much like movies. Plus, I have amiibo wasting enough of my money already (and, unwillingly, Disney Infinity, since my brother is making me buy them with him). Toys-to-life games in the way Disney Infinity and probably this Dimensions game does it seem to me to be nothing more than an excuse to sell multiple unfinished and very small games for extreme prices due to the cost of the playset and figures. LEGO already has full games for a lot of these IP, so I really wonder how they are going to pull this off. I might try the game out if the gameplay is promising or the NA price is good, since this concept somewhat reminds me of LEGO Universe back in the day (why did they shut that down!?) and a few sets tempt me. But meh.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Hey, quit stealing my lines!
(Comment #12)
@Quorthon - Portals like turtles.
@Captain_Gonru - The portal looks like the Disney and SKylanders portals, so I'm guessing the bottom comes complete and all the rest is just decorative. So lose 1 piece, lose them all, it doesn't matter, as long as you have the base. Lego knows kids like to build things though, it's a smart move.
Lego is like the anti-Ntinedo of business sense.
No LEGO BIONICLE, no buy.
It's $99.99 just for the Starter Pack. I can still see Amiibos dominating over it
100 green ones to play a gimmicky mediocre game? Yeah I'll pass.
@Quorthon haha sorry! I just got a flash back of late night trade ins at gamestop where I would get a few people in a row trade in all their rock/guitar stuff. Always when I had a ton of homework and just wanted to leave too...
I don't think I saw your comment. I just ran to the bottom of the page to comment after i read the article.
This interests me, but at the same time I dropped out of Skylanders and Disney Infinity after I stopped doing anything with the latter and swapped it all for amiibo. I'm just afraid that some of the expansions and such are going to be retailer exclusive, as well as bought en masse by eBay resellers. I consider myself to be lucky that I was able to secure the amiibo I have, and only with this past wave of preorders have I failed to get the ones I want completely. Not sure if I want to do it all again with this.
Having read the article, I thought to myself that I'll just stick with Disney Infinity as I'm not a huge LEGO fan (I have some of the games involving my favourite franchises, but find a number of LEGO games quite easy to ignore too) ... then I saw the trailer ... gulp ! I'll keep an eye on this as information starts to filter through, but I think I'm gonna need a bigger shelf.
I am still holding out for the possible Amiibo focused game Nintendo may end up releasing. Not too interested in any of the current toy based games other than that.
Great Scott!
LEGO BTTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahem....big (like really big) BTTF fan here and while it isn't a full 'Lego Back to the Future' game...that Level Pack alone has me super hyped and super interested in this game!
After seeing how much this one costs... nah. I'm just going to stick with amiibo purchases.
LEGO Jurassic World is my next LEGO game. I may play Dimensions later on, if I can get it cheap. lol
I really haven't got enough money to be buying a lot of NFC figures!
This had my interest big time until I saw the price... compared to Infinity and Skylanders... I don't get the justification of charging double just because it's Lego... which I think makes it look cheap and nasty. Add on £30 for the level packs and as much as this probably will be a very enjoyable game... there's no way I'd ever pay that much for this.
Yeah, I'd love to play this, but the toys to life thing is rubbing me the wrong way.
@InnerSpirit I'm sorry, but where's the price? Or more importantly, what's the price?
@VeeFlamesNL Game is taking pre-orders of £89 to £99 on starter packs depending on your console.
@Kuipo You're probably the only one who thinks this...
