We recently reviewed Mugen Power's New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL extended batteries, and gave them a thumbs up to anyone who is willing to sacrifice form for longevity.
Thanks to their massive capacity the batteries dramatically increase the stamina of your New Nintendo 3DS system, but you don't need to just take our word for it anymore - our friends over at Family Gamer TV have put together an excellent time-lapse video showing just how long these beasts can run for.
Here's how the different models fared:
- 3 hours 45 minutes - Original 3DS
- 4 hours 5 minutes - 2DS
- 4 hours 32 minutes - 3DS XL
- 4 hours 38 minutes - New 3DS with 1400mAh Standard battery
- 14 hours 39 minutes - 3DS XL with Mugen 6250 mAh battery
- 15 hours 2 minutes - New 3DS XL with 6250 mAh Mugen battery
- 15 hours 58 minute - New 3DS with 5000 mAh Mugen battery
As you can see, that's quite a jump on the standard 3DS, and even the 3DS XL. Will this video evidence convince you to buy one? Sound off in the comments to let us know.

I can buy half a system at that price. Would be nice to have but it kinda goes against the limited edition system's. I don't want to lose the back of my system to add this.
To be honest, it's way cheaper to simply get a power bank and a 3DS-to-USB charging cable, and it's easier than sacrificing the entire coverpate spot.
This is great. One thing I've done is use my New 3DS less than my original launch day 3DS because of the battery. On my original 3DS, I had an extended battery that was fantastic for extended sessions. I had forgotten how quickly the battery runs out from a good session, and these extended batteries make all the difference. Personally I find even though it adds bulk, in improves the overall ergonomics of the device as well.
I think adding thickness can be very beneficial to us with big hands. The price is pretty steep, but that is a huge boost in life for sure.
No.
For me 4 hours of battery is more than enough. I am not sure how many hours it will give you while playing Monster Hunter 4 with Wireless on, brightness to the max and full 3D, that is one of the few situations where I would like more battery life.
Nintendo needs to improve battery life on stand by. I like to be able to play and then put it on stand by without losing so much time of those 4 hours.
Very impressive, but not really necessary. I don't think I'd ever be away from a power supply for more than 5 hours at a time unless I'm on a camping trip or something, in which case I wouldn't have my 3DS with me anyway.
On a slightly off-topic note: What does "Mugen" actually mean ?
Theres a Fighting Game Engine with that name, an RPG series by Compile Heart and a Battery company...and i still have no clue what that word actually means
@Topic:
For me, the regular battery life is more than enough. On the go, the battery life lasts long enough for quick play sessions and at home, pluging the sytsem into the main is really a non-issue.
No because I usually play while hooked up to an outlet anyway, and that gargantuan battery pak would drive me insane!
@Kaze_Memaryu
Doesn't work
@Einherjar "Infinite," referencing the long-lasting nature of the battery, in this case. I'm guessing the amount of fighters and intense action in those series is what the name "Mugen" is referring to, in those cases.
This certainly seems like a great investment for the traveler, but much less so for the homebody.
@oHOWEo How does it not? I know people who use this method to charge their phone AND handheld(s). The only important part is to watch if the numbers fit.
If I could buy a regular New 3DS I'd totally down with that new Battery. The added Thickness on the original 3DS was quite welcome.
The only downside I've had so far since upgrading from an original 3DS to the New 3DS XL is the battery life. I had a Nyko Power Pak battery in my OG 3DS very early on and I loved the added weight and battery time. Even always having 3D and brightness all the way up, I very rarely saw that red light.
But with the N3DS, I've seen it a few times. Often because I forget to put it on the charger when I get home (previously I would only charge it overnight). I never used to have to turn down brightness or the 3D to extend battery life, but now I often do. Poor me.
I'm seriously considering getting one of these. It's pricey, but I actually think it's worth the investment for me.
Eh......
Too big, bulky, and expensive, so that's a no for me. If I want longer gaming times/standby times on a current gen handheld, I would play on my Vita or Shield.
What about the New 3DS XL with the standard battery?
@Gauchorino Hey, thank you Finally, that mystery is cleared
@Einherjar Glad to be of service to you!
4 times the battery life sounds nice, though I'd be fine with just the regular battery life of the New 3DS XL. Definitely better than the regular 3DS and it's usually the amount of time I need whenever I'm outside. (I dunno why I'd need to be outside for 15 hours with a 3DS lol)
No, thanks. Nintendo batteries might be crappy but I have learned that I don't want any massive handheld attachments any more.
Very rarely will my gaming needs exceed 4hrs on the go. Gotta take a break sometime.
If one is willing to add bulk to their 3DS, there's a better, 4000 MAh battery out there, for a lesser price...
