For fans of Bandai Namco and RPGs, the Tales Of - known by many simply as Tales - series likely stands up as a favourite; it all began with Tales of Phantasia on the Super Famicom in Japan, a title that would eventually grace a Nintendo system in the West through a Game Boy Advance re-release. As a series it's been prominent across Nintendo and Sony hardware, with re-make Tales of the Abyss being a relatively recent title for Nintendo fans on the 3DS.
Bandai Namco is now celebrating the 20th anniversary for the franchise, releasing a flashy new video to show the diverse history of the series to date.
Tales of Zestiria is coming to the PS3 in the West soon, with the most recent entries typically on Sony's systems. Nevertheless we like to be optimists, and Nintendo and Bandai Namco currently have a particularly strong working relationship, so we hope celebratory announcements will feature the big N's systems in some way. Bandai Namco is promising "massive surprises" in the coming months.
In the meantime Bandai Namco wants fans to share their memories and fan creations of the franchise by tweeting with the hashtag #IAmTalesOf, though the Twitter account name TalesofU is, unfortunately, just a coincidence; it's been around since April 2012. We can't win them all.
What do you hope to see from Bandai Namco to celebrate the Tales series this year?

After a few years where none of them were getting translated, we've been pretty lucky. Xilia, Xilia 2 and Zestra all coming West without any fuss, plus a re-release of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Hearts finally coming West via the Vita. Pretty fond of the series, and while I think a 3DS entry would be really nice to flesh out the handheld's RPG list, I think the next game is probably gonna be on PS4.
following their recent trend it will be a collection of remaster of every Nintendo exclusive Tales game for ps4
if they do remember us, they'll remember to delay whatever the surprise is for us by several months.
After the recent disappointment of the Sega x Game Freak collaboration not coming to Nintendo platforms (amongst many other things skipping Nintendo platforms of course), I'm not keeping my fingers crossed for this either. It will be welcome if we WILL get in on the action, but.. yeah.
Anyone else notice a lack of Tales games on Wii U? I'd love ToS HD to get a Wii U release, as that was my first Tales game!
I still have to get Reve Unitia.
i'd love for them to release tales of the world 2 in the west, really loved the firs ton psp
Tales of Phantasia GBA VC release anyone?
Announcing a Tales of Anniversary Collection on a nintendo system including the game-cube one would involve me changing my avatar and username.
@DiscoGentleman Yeah they've made it pretty clear that they're sticking with Sony, so I'm not holding my breath, though we may get an odd remake now and then like with Abyss on 3DS.
@DarthNocturnal I'd prefer if they'd just port Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, which was the definitive version of Phantasia, as well as a remake of its sequel. Even if they did though, that'd likely stay on Sony's systems.
Tales of is mostly a Sony series nowadays, with Nintendo stuff barely getting any love. I don't expect any announcements for 3DS from this with Wii U definitely not getting anything.
Bammy can prove me wrong though.
"If there is evil in this world, it lurks in the hearts of man."
@DarthNocturnal Sadly I think that's all we're going to get unless they really put some time and money into either a new eshop download or a Wii U port/new game, but with the way things are with Wii U 3rd parties, I think that VC release is all we're going to get.
God I wish Namco would at least put Tales of the Abyss on the eshop so I don't have to carry the cartridge around. And for that matter, put Ridge Racer 3D and Tekken 3D Prime Edition on there too. It took them forever and a rerelease to put Ace Combat on the eshop.
I don't see Tales of games going to Nintendo platforms ever again.
ideas on this
1.some virtual console game for 3ds and Wii u
3ds(NES,game boy,game boy color,and game gear)
Wii U(NES,SNES,GBA)
maybe some TG16 ones
The only "Tales of" game that I've played is Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS. I want to get a used PS3 soon and play Tales of Symphonia 1 and 2 HD.
Of the Tales Of series, of only play the 3DS remake of Tales of the Abyss; it's one of my favorite games of all time, too.
Hopefully some PS4 ports, considering I'm not getting a PS3 in the foreseeable future.
@DarthNocturnal Luke Fon Fabre is on Super Smash Bros. 4!
As a Mii fighter on my copy, anyways....
Unless it's a main Tales entry for Wii U or a 3DS port of Destiny/Destiny II, I don't think I'll care.
They could just rerelease Tales of Symphonia HD on the Wii U and I'd be satisfied
But are they good games?
@Megas75
I'll second that motion.
It's possible. They did co develop Smash so maybe they are starting a new friendship.
Probably my favorite RPG series. Every non-Nintendo console I bought in the past 7-8 has been to play a Tales game, starting with buying a 360 for Vesperia.
Nintendo or not, Tales has me for life.
I'd love to see a brand new Tales game on a Nintendo console. They sort of just abandoned us after Tales of Symphonia and have only given us a couple of ports since.
@Megas75 And make use of the GCN Adapter. That thing can't just be limited to Smash, right?
it's funny how this popped up because I was just saying how I wish a Tales of game would come to the Wii U, I would buy that day one if they did! (even if it's a re-release of Tales of Xillia 1 & 2 for Wii U) My friend bought Tales of Symphonia Chronicles for the PS3 and it made me remember how much fun I had with the games of Gamecube and Wii. Hopefully, the surprise is something good for us Nintendo fans, instead of Sony getting everything like usual -_-
The Tales series is the one of the main reason why I own a PS3 and PS4. Tales of Heart was never released in the states so I also picked that up on Vita. I would love another game in the series on WiiU. I own Tales of the Abyss and I liked it, but for some reason I did not like the red headed step child protaganist. These games are system sellers for me and so is the Dragon Quest series. I love the battle systems and story lines. These games provide me with a enormous amount of gameplay. I salavate when one is announced. I like them better than the final fantasy series. They can even keep it in Japanese and just give english subtitles . I found that experience so entertaining with Hearts. I just hope I don't own it already and they give us one that was not released in the west. I'm just glad they are not on Xbone because I would be forced to buy that system too.
If it's Zestiria being released on Wii U and PS4, I will gloat about the fact that I predicted this in that thread a few months back!
@River3636
There aren't any Tales games on the PS4!
I know, but I also know there will be.
@Dezzy but look at the this
In the meantime Bandai Namco wants fans to share their memories and fan creations of the franchise by tweeting with the hashtag #IAmTalesOf, though the Twitter account name TalesofU is, unfortunately, just a coincidence; it's been around since April 2012. We can't win them all.
It is possible that could be for Wii U coincidence or not. I prefer nintendo systems and I am still hopeful. I still haven't purchased any games for my PS4 yet. It was a gift from my ex, but I would have immediatly when this game gets announced for it.
@Baker1000
Not exactly they released Hearts on 3ds. But yeah they did seem to distance themselves after previously having what seemed to be a good relationship.
Edit: I mean DS not 3ds. Whoops!
Never played any tales games, but have always wanted to.
I don't see much to celebrate. By now, the Tales series is a mere shadow of what it used to be - from a strong and intense action RPG series with engaging characters to a terribly-written mess with button-mashing and sloppy stereotyping (mainly Vesperia onward). It's frustrating to see a franchise continually degenerating like that.
A Tales of Symphonia/Dawn of the New World/Graces F collection popped up on Amazon Europe, so maybe they might port it to Wii U seeing as all three were on Nintendo consoles. More likely than not a compilation of some kind is probably gonna be announce seeing as its an anniversary celebration. Last time we got Symphonia Chronicles.
I can't think of much else besides a next-gen Tales of game on PS4, or something to do with tales of Zestiria.
I'm a huge Tales fan, so this news excites me. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the announcement of Zestiria being put on steam in addition to ps3 though. But I'm hopeful! I would love it if they released some of the untranslated ps2 titles like Destiny, Destiny 2, and Rebirth, un the west via a compilation or on psn. Unfortunately, I dont expect any Nintendo love soon.
Though I love the Tales games, playing through them kinda felt the same, my only few favorites are Phantasia (SNES), Destiny (PS1), Destiny 2 (PS2, not Eternia), Symphonia (GameCube), Abyss (PS2, 3DS), Hearts (DS, not the Vita version), Innocence (DS), Vesperia (Xbox 360), and Narikiri Dungeons trilogy (GBA). Would be great if there's one for Wii U but at this point I am tired of the Tales games, those games keep dragging on and on way too long.
I love this series, here's hoping more of it comes to 3DS/WiiU. I'd like a new entry over another re-release though.
Oooh, I wonder what it is! In the meantime I'll be playing Zesteria
@sweetiepiejonus I didn't know that, but it never made it out of Japan. Actually, upon looking up, there have been a few Nintendo releases since Symphonia. Innocence on DS and Graces on Wii...but neither outside of Japan again.
I also forgot we had Symphonia 2...but the less said about that the better. It seems they like Nintendo, but not enough to give games a western release or an original game solely on a Nintendo console.
@Baker1000
Hearts was the only one I knew about. It's a shame but I can understand the business side of things.
I just wish more publishers would take risks on localizing titles like Xseed does. I have them to thank for plenty of quirky or niche titles that the "big" studios won't bother with.
I wish we got Tales of Hearts R on the 3DS (or even New 3DS), but I have a Vita as well so I guess I'm alright on that one... Fingers crossed we get Tales of Zestiria in the west (doesn't matter what console... Although PS4 is the one most likely to get it.. I just want it!
@TruenoGT Phantasia used to be on iOS, they killed it because it wasn't pulling in microtransaction $$$, not even letting people play just the game.
