Super Mario 64 has long been a popular game for speedrunning, and the title has had many world records attached to its name. Another has just been added, and it was rather unexpected.
On 26th February two speedrunners known as Nero and Puncayshun raced to see who could collect the game's 120 power stars first. Despite saving and quitting twice throughout his run Nero still came out on top, with a masterful completion time of one hour, 42 minutes and 15 seconds. This time improved upon Puncayshun's previously held record of one hour, 42 minutes and 32 seconds, by a mere 17 seconds.
You can watch Nero's entire speedrun below and admire the latest world record.

Great run. I'm actually surprised to hear the record was beaten by 17 seconds. That's a lot of time in a speed run.
Man, playing through a game like that must feel pretty awesome!
I read "Speedrunner collects NEW SUPER MARIO 64-" And then got all excited for a second because I thought we were getting a Super Mario 64 remake.
That is a heckuva achievement!
The way this guy jumps around levels to collect 100 coins is incredible. Tick Tockenham Clock particularly.
Crazy - an hour and a half is about my record for getting 70 stars, the requirement for getting to the final Bowser stage. That's a successful speed run for me lol. My hat is off to these folks!!
Wow by 17 seconds, right on. Congrats!
@TeeJay hahaha I thought the same thing!
Anyone who can pull some of the advanced speedrun acrobatics, I tip my hat too...
I'm lucky if I get that long jump lined up properly...
I remember being super impressed with myself back when I was a kid for collecting all the stars in one day.
I love speed runs! Well done to them both.
Immense.
An hour and 45 minutes of MIND BLOW!!!
Very impressive. I run this game myself and this is awesome.
Impressive run, it's great to see classic games still getting some love.
I'm reminded of how N64 hasn't aged well unlike the Super Nintendo.
