Gaming is a funny hobby, in which the most dedicated can find meaning in the most simplistic and light-hearted of concepts. That's not a bad thing, just a reflection of how much fans really love their favourite franchises and games.
The latest video from hugely popular YouTube channel The Game Theorists is a case in point, as it tackles the seemingly impossible - applying lore to the Super Smash Bros. series; these are games that, ultimately, seem like a simple excuse for mascots to knock the snot out of each other. Despite this the channel takes into account opening sequences and the evolution of the Classic Mode (with a key reference of the Subspace Emissary mode of Brawl) to tease out potential lore; it's all speculative, but there's some pretty decent logic at work.
Unsurprisingly the focus is on Masahiro Sakurai, with themes of ageing, responsibility and ongoing commitment being prominent. Despite the jokey tone of the video, the theory it espouses is actually relatively sombre.
Check it out and let us know what you think.

I saw that video and I have to say it is an interesting theory but then again most of them are which is why I like the channel.
Saw this when it came out, made me rethink my life.
This theory is pretty depressing, but yet so interesting.
Eh, Game Theory is great at jumping to conclusions and his blind fans call it fact. I like the channel, but I swear if another idiot says Peach is Rosalina's mother...
Usually don't like Game Theory that much with their ridiculous theories, making them sound like some kid on deviantart obsessed with bad creepypasta. (THEY WERE DEAD AND FROM THE FUTURE AND IN A COMA THE WHOLE TIME!!!!!11!!!)
But this was honestly pretty well put together, I always had the same sort of idea of this "plot" in my head.
I've never seen one of their videos, but I liked this one. It was funny, but also actually made a surprising amount of sense.
You'd think the lore would be like what they did with Link in the LoZ.
Same soul. Different hero.
Like, look at Link in smash 4. He's Twilight Link, but got that hint of Skyward Sword in him. Because the smash universe took the soul and put it into a trophy where the character is basically nerfed for the competition in Smash. Like how Shulk would just GOD and break the meta or Samus just Speed Boost through and around everyone while freezing and melting everyone while dropping overpowered bombs everywhere. They're the same soul, but just another copy.
I think he brings up some points but looks into it a little to much. also I do believe that didn't the directer say, "they may make another smash bros in the future but I do not plan to lead it." so that means the ball thing is him giving up not giving in!
@GhotiH what? Who? When? How? The love????
@StitchScout idk man he says so right now but when the next Smash starts development I bet he will get involved after a point, its never pleasant to see your creation get screwed with and as Sakurai has said so himself: there can not be Smash without Sakurai
@GhotiH
My friend showed that one to me, it's so incredibly easy to shoot down. He does have some good content though.
Interesting, yet... I don't know, annoying? I'd give this a 6 or 7. That Mario episode, however....
Well MatPat always ends with reducing everything to "just a theory". I find his stuff interesting and enjoyable nonetheless.
It makes you think, doesn't it? Usually with Game Theory I rule 25% true, 25% false, and 50% in the middle.
I stopped caring about Game Theory or ANY game trivia without interview-based sources during an RE4 gamefaqs. It was a fine FAQ, but it said Leon's Matilda gun was clearly a reference to the children's book about a girl who was pretty smart and had dumb used car parents.
Oh...okay.
Other people pointed out that it could be a reference to Leon and Matilda, from Leon, a movie about a man named Leon who protects a younger girl from assassins using a pistol vaguely similar to the Matilda gun.
The trivia writer admitted that that makes a lot more sense.
Ever since then i've just assumed all trivia was randomly mashed together words. Though I still love my IMDB movie trivia
"He knows how to read, so hes 12, he owns a pencil, so he's 14"
Or four. Or even a clever three year old...
Here's another thing he didn't mention about Master Core. If you don't knock off the Core in time, it will self destruct, but not before sending off five red waves that instantly KO's the player. In connection with his theory, it would seem that Sakurai would try to take down his creations with him and not allow the series to continue anymore. However, if the player has an extra life or dodges all of the waves, the Core will self destruct anyways, meaning that Sakurai himself would give it all up himself, acknowledging that it's over and that the series will continue without him.
I guess that's the best way I could put it.
But it doesn't self destruct. It just let's off an energy wave. That's just taking advantage of someone taking their time taunting all day.
Wow, this was very interesting
Nice theory. I wonder if this will in fact be his last game. Man, the poor guy did go though a ton of crap during the process of making this game. I remember he had some sort of arm injury or something that was really hindering him during the first part of production.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Another theory: Smash is the imagination of a kid with autism.
A thing I noticed is when the Youtuber talks about the Melee trophy room. He says it looks like Sakurai is 16-20 something. If he was born in 1970 or so, the time he had this room would be in the 90's. There is a gameboy advance in that room. The gameboy advance came out at about 2002. That is something I realized.
@yoko19191 No, a boy. Not a girl.
@GhotiH
Man, that annoys me to no end.
I stopped listening after he said a every 1-Up creates an entirely new universe. Never mind the fact that Mario's death wouldn't cause the world to be devoured by a black hole, we actually see him use them in the RPGs, they simply bring him back from unconsciousness.
And the "Link is Dead" episode is just as bad (considering it's their most watched video). "Because the devs decided to reuse a few characters, it most all be constructed from his memories, cuz he's dead and in purgatory and stuff. And as for the people and landscapes he's never seen before, they don't exist for the purpose of this theory. Also, PBG is in this video! Like, fav, don't comment and subscribe!"
I think all of the Game Theory's videos are interesting. All of them aren't believable though. He puts it so much work into these videos (100+ hrs) and people just constantly hate on it and try to shoot it down. Shame.
@StitchScout It's exactly the point for Game Theory, it's the overanalysis of facts and hints given. And yeah, like @DBPirate, not all may be true, but it's just a video-fication of people like us linking plot hints together to come up with what could be the story. How often anyone gets "But it's a theory... of Game Theory"?
LOOK AT THAT. A SOMEWHAT BELIEVABLE THEORY FROM MATPAT. JK. Its just like every other vid hes made
@Sforzando That theory you posted is much more interesting imo
Ugh these guys again?
Great, Game Theory loosely tying obscure and unrelated facts together again. At least, that's what every other one of this guy's videos are. I think I'll pass.
This is some deep stuff.
@Sforzando I had that video in mind while watching MatPat's theory. Gnoggin's theory is better constructed in my opinion
GameTheory videos by this guy always simultaneously entertain me and piss me off. I have to remind myself these are just theories, and they're not claiming that anything they say is fact. At the same time, it's frustrating how much only the supporting evidence is used and silly minor details like in-game canon and word of god are never touched on unless they support the one-sided theory being presented.
In this case, one major issue is the flaw with the narrator's interpretation of the character of Tabuu. He suggests that Tabuu represents the taboo of society that adults shouldn't play with toys and/or shouldn't make video games "that aren't Call of Duty."
The thing is, unlike in most of western civilization, in Japan spending your entire life playing with video games, reading comic books or doing other things that might be seen as childish isn't a taboo. It's highly doubtful Sakurai would have created a character to represent a concept that is foreign to his home country.
@Sforzando
I thought that video was going to be really offensive, given the mass popular misconception of autism... I'm glad to see Gnoggin did his research.
Game theory in my opinion is great at summing up theories in a way that can very much be true and this one may be the best. It is such a interesting, yet depressing story about Sakurai's unending struggles on a quest for freedom of creativity. I love how they explain things though... They depict the most they can find and sum it up to something that is reasonable.
For those who roll their eyes at GameTheory, I think the main point is to play into our want/need to look more into the things we love, whether or not what we're looking for is actually there. IIRC, that's kind of what most Literature and Art History classes are built off of.
And unlike most theorists, this guy seems to put in the footwork to make sure that there's actual relevancy and context to the theories, even if they may be a HUUUUUGE stretch (and I'm sure he acknowledges that they can be). He's definitely not walking around like he's preaching the gospel.
Whether or not theories like this Smash one is true or accurate, the end thought in this one did make me think a little as an artist. It also made me feel guilty about my obsession for Smash, while also make me appreciate the franchise and Sakurai all the more.
It's really not a stretch of of theory when you put together the facts that sakurai has stated himself. Well done IMO
eh, dont care for there content
What's up with people dissing the theories?
Of course we only for facts about the games the things that happen in the games, so beyond that it's always theorizing, c'mon.
@GhotiH Well...It's just a Theory...A GAME THEORY, thanks for reading!!!
I'm glad I've never heard about this YT channel. I hate those dumb conspiracy theories on pop culture stuff. Why can't you just enjoy those things for what they are and not for what they should be if they were real or if they were supposed to make any sense? It was this kind of stuff that ruined American silver age comic books. It's just entertainment, people. Did someone watch Cheers for the good laughs it made or to ponder if the bar was some kind of strange lab where Sam was creating mysterious brews that could only attract the same people at all times and didn't turn them drunk and kept Norm's liver in top condition? Come on! It's just a dream match, a dream match. But of course, we are not talking the same game here, they talk about Super Smash Bross, I've only played Super Smash Brothers (seriously, not even Japanese say bros).
@GhotiH Then... PLATINUM HEADBUTT TO THE MOON!
