Bandai Namco's big news from the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast was that it's working on a free-to-play downloadable title for the Wii U under the tentative title of Project Treasure.
The game is being pitched as an action title where 4 players work co-operatively to disarm traps, beat enemies and grab as much loot as possible, but very little else was actually revealed.
However, enough was shown to crank the rumour mill up to eleven, as some eagle-eyed people online have spotted that one of the faces in the reveal footage looks a lot like the character KOS-MOS From the Xenosaga series.
As Monolith Soft fans will know, Xenosaga is a franchise which appeared on the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS and is considered to be the spiritual successor to Square's Xenogears. Monolith Soft -- a studio founded by former Square staff -- is currently working on Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U.
You can check out the resemblance by comparing the images below.
This is the shot from the Nintendo Direct:
And here's KOS-MOS from Xenosaga -- note the headgear on her cheeks:
It looks pretty convincing, and given that both games are being published by Bandai Namco, there's a good chance that it could be true. Another theory is that the game is in such an early stage of development that Bandai Namco was forced to steal assets from some of its other games to create that "teaser" image.

I am curious to see what will come out of this... but I am no fan of Namco's freemium model for stuff like what they are doing with Soulblade and Ace Combat. Time will tell, I guess... but that's definitely KOS-MOS allright.
Havent played the games with KOS-MOS in the except project X but that is definitely her they even have the same hair colour.
If its anything like their Ace Combat PS3 MMO, dont even bother to check it out.
Their interpretation of "Free2Play" has to be one of the worst ever created.
I sure hope that Nintendo will intervene to make it a tad more barable.
@Topic
Looking at the screencap, the cheek guard is pretty obvious. And Xenosaga being a project by Namco and Monolith, her appearing in a WiiU exclusive title wouldnt be all that unrealistic.
When was Xenosaga on the PS3? I only know the trilogy was on PS2 whith a different version of episodes 1 and 2 for DS in Japan only.
@Sonicfan11589 Good point, I'll fix that. I assumed it was on the PS3 as well!
Hmm, I never got around to finishing that game.
That would be pretty awesome. Fun games =)
That would likely be the only reason to play it if true...
Ahhh, very interesting. Normally who can tell part of one anime face from another, but this is indeed a cool find, if there's any merit to it.
@Einherjar I just finished reading a few reviews of Ace Combat and that was painful. I can't even fathom playing it. It is like that were mocking the free-to-play concept by taking it to it's extreme, then I realized they were serious.
@Einherjar
I was really looking forward to that F2P Ace Combat, after all the enjoyment I'd had with Assault Horizon and Assault Horizon Legacy (which was my first real Ace Combat experience). A few weeks ago as I was going over my PS libraries, I thought of it again and looked it up and...
Then became very sad.
Wow, how about they add 3D models of Original Xenogears characters like Fei Fong Wong, That would make me play.
see could also be made in soul calibur 3 but if your look at the picture closely you can see a bit of her hair even if its slightly blurred out.
I usually don't believe rumors but the reasoning is sound.
Maybe if she is it means Nintendo will make Xenosaga 4 finally?
@shinokami
I think that ship has already sailed. I never played more than the first Xenosaga game, but from my understanding, they really butchered the story to attempt to make it work with three games since they couldn't do the full six they wanted to. Plus they carried over a lot of the elements and themes into Xenoblade that were gonna exist in later Xenosaga games. I can't really say I'd ever expect them to release another one, especially considering half of the series would be on a competing platform
Strange, if KOS-MOS was going to show up anywhere I'd expect it to be in Xenoblade X.
And even if it looks like her, it won't be KOS-MOS. Everybody has looked the same in FF games since 7 (well except 9), they just keep changing the names.
Anyone know who the skull dude is?
@Jayvir Actually they released Xenosaga Episodes 1 & 2 in Japan for the DS. If they wanted to they could release them for Wii U and make Episode 4.
It would at least not be unlikely if Bandai Namco involves characters from other games for making this new game exciting for certain existing an bases.
@shinokami Namco still owns the rights to that saga (hence Project X Zone) plus this is a Namco Bandai game that is just exclusive to Wii U. Nintendo has no involvement in development (or else not that we know of)
Does Namco fully own Xenosaga, or does Monolith Soft own part of it? I'd love to see the trilogy released, either in its original form on PSN, or as a remake on the PS3 and/or Wii U.

Sounds a lot like an MMO
And characters "Accessible to Everyone" sounds like you have to pay for the other characters.
yea KOS-MOS is pretty much in every Namco crossover title, so i totally believe this.
The dude below her is MR T!!!!
@TrueWiiMaster Seems like Monolith has some ownership, which is being managed by Nintendo. Ever since the buyout I have been noticing that KOS-MOS has been seen only on Nintendo platforms.
@DarkKirby wouldn't an MMO have many more players?
@Quorthon Yeah, i know that feeling.
And a buddy of mine was idiotic enough, to drop several hundret € into it, just to get a certain plane...
And for those who dont know how this game works:
You can play 3 stages (fuel) every 12 hours. There is only a very very basic "single player" (which also costs fuel) and only one multiplayer mode, which is an 8 player (two squads of 4) Co-Op score attack,
New ships and parts have to be grinded first (every stage grants a certain amount of research exp) and once unlocked, costs a ludacris amount of in game money.
The kicker: Special planes handed out in events can only be gotten, when you reach the top 200 of the GLOBAL leader boards.
These ships grossly overshadow the regular planes, making score attacks unfair and at the end of the day unwinable.
And even worse: With certain updates, normal planes get buffs, rendering the special planes weaker than the regular ones...
Thus, rendering your efforts and money spend pointless.
Its really one of the worst manages F2P games out there, and it shows, as its user base plummitted pretty hard.
I sure hope that Nintendo prevents them using such rip-off tactics again, and infuses the project with their own, fresh ideas shown in their own F2P titles, where purchases with real money are really the last resort action.
@Einherjar I think Nintendo has rules about free-to-play. So who knows.
Dude.....if...and I mean IF....it's Xenosaga Ep.IV...holy s#@! people
@R-L-A-George I sure hope so. Nintendos own F2P endevours have been rather fair as of yet. Even the very "smartphone esque" pokemon game thats comming soon has several options for you to continue playing besides flat out buying more gametime.
@MaverickHunterX Wait...what ? What made you think its Xenosaga ?
And i highly doubt that this will be a fully fledged MMORPG
@Einherjar Tank! Tank! Tank! sadly proved that there's no such regulation. While it wasn't as bad because it was an actual retail game they simply cut up and sold in parts, it has all the same problems, only there's some genuine content and a better alternative you could easily grab for a fraction of what they're charging (though I think the retail version lacked an online mode?).
@SamirMalik
I was speaking more about PSO type MMOs where the lobbies have lots of players but you go into each "mission" with a party of 4.
@CanisWolfred As far as im aware, both version (if you assamble all the digital parts) are one and the same.
Though i have to say, it was a pretty interesting idea they had there.
I got the game way cheaper this way, since i could just leave out the multoplayer portion that was severely lackluster.
Thus, i only payed for the content i really wanted.
And at the time of its release, all digital parts of the game together cost the same as the retail version (At least over here in germany)
So i dont really think that you can compare these things, as Tank³ was more of a "pay what you want" kinda deal instead of "pay to stay competetive" like Ace Combat infinity is handled.
@SamirMalik Not necessarily. Guild Wars handled it the same way. The hub towns were the only parts where players could interact with others. Once you left them, everything was instanced for you and your party.
Its the perfect system for story oriented games, since you wont have other random players interfere with boss encounters and such.
It's funny, that for a game that so little was revealed about, I'm totally hyped for this one. More 4 player local co-op games please.
@Einherjar Oh. Well the full game dropped to $30 new pretty quickly over here, and a lot of sites had it for lower than that. It was "pay what you want", I guess, but it didn't need to be. I honestly felt I was playing an obnoxious demo where I had to pay a good amount for something in order to actually have fun. That alone is bad enough. Why even make it free to play, then?
@CanisWolfred The free to play part was a gloryfied demo, yes.
Though i guess by Nintendos rules, a demo couldnt have ended up with purchase options, so theyve probably gone this route instead.
Like i said, i quite liked the concept. i got the rather fun and simplistic, arcady single player campaign for relatively cheap which i would otherwise never have bothered to buy.
Convoluted and confusing ? Absolutely. But a bad idea in general ? I really dont think so.
If fleshed out and streamlined a little more, i think many games and gamers alike could benefit from something like that.
Lets say: You buy a shooter, but never really play online. Well, leave out all multiplayer content and save money and disc space.
Which would obviously just work with games that have dedicated modes for each. Games like Mario Kart wouldnt really benefit from it, as it would just block one menu option, but i think you get the idea.
Id really welcome a "pay for what you want" option, as long as the full package ends up at the regular retail price.
Anything more, and we would just have ended up at EAs DLC policy.
@Einherjar Ah, that's actually putting it into perspective...thanks.
