Rookie pilots – at least in Japan – will soon be able to take to the skies once again, with Bandai Namco earlier this week announcing Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus for 3DS in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine.
This new entry in the series is essentially an enhanced version of the 2012 3DS title, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. The original 3DS debut for Ace Combat was known as Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble in Japan and was a remake of Ace Combat 2.
The latest aerial combat game will feature amiibo support; including the ability to scan in Nintendo characters as jet designs, and will also utilise the improved 3D and additional buttons on the New 3DS.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus will be released in Japan on 29 January 2015. If it makes it across to the west, we’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, tell us what you think about the Nintendo-themed fighter jet designs, and if this surprising news excites you for future amiibo support.

That looks pretty darn cool.
I'm surprised there's so much Skyward Sword focus for LoZ content in Nintendo games recently.
Lame. I'm not too fond on Amiibo :/ If this is the kind of content Amiibo will cover, then I find it pretty unnecessary and pointless, not to mention compicated. Why complicate things with extra toys / figures, when you could just bring out DLC content the normal way. Sure, this might appeal to younger audiences who are enthusiastic about collecting physical versions of Nintendo characters, and that's alright, I'm just hoping this Amiibo concept doesn't get out of hand and that they don't get too carried away to exponentially start including Amiibo for everything.
that bowser paint looks awesome. i hope we get this game in NA.
Come on Nintendo, please give the west fatal frame and this, pllllleeeeaaasseee!!!! We like these games too!
amiibo support already?! Also, I didn't expect this to be the first 3rd-party game to support amiibo.
Will buy the heck out of this! I love the original 3DS game, it actually manages to be my very favourite of the whole franchise of which I am a huge fan. I hope they consider bringing a Ace Combat game on Wii U next.
so is this only for the new 3DS or will it run on the standart 3DS systems aswell????
still need to play this game lol
I had always intended on getting the original. If this comes to the USA, I'm gonna pre-order it! Also what's with that Luigi Amiibo? Is that the final version?!
This actually looks promising. Bandai Namco can develop and publish utter crap nut work on Smash Bros with Nintendo. I find there position as a company a bit hard to understand.
So cool especially luigi!! Lets hope this is just the start for 3rd party support
Oh man! Those airplane designs make me want to play the game.
If third party titles are going to implement amiibo support, then they should at least accommodate ALL currently released amiibo figurines (including the more obscure characters).
I'm not at all interested in these sorts of games, so the novelty of amiibo won't sway me otherwise.
With Knuckles
My concerns are, that although this is only the second game that seems to be made for the New 3DS, I am worried that the majority of future third party titles will also be made solely for the new system. Also I hope future titles make better use of the Amiibo than paint jobs regardless how awesome they look.
The original sold better in America, so this is most likely going to be localized after the New 3DS comes our way.
Bowser amiibo incoming, I see.
I love those sneaky spoilers.
the ultimate in lazy game development: add some new skins and rerelease the same game. great.
i enjoyed the original 3DS ace combat, coming close to getting all of the achievements, but i'm not an idiot, so won't be buying the same game again but with the option to spend more money to unlock skins.
I strongly doubt that this game will be exclusive to the New 3DS. Of course you'll need the N3DS for the added buttons and amiibo support, but I doubt that Bandai would favour a negligible user base over the 45 million+ user base of the original 3DS.
I actually own Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy and it's really good, I'll wait and see whether this game will have enough new content to justify a purchase.
This is what I thought when I heard Nintendo talk about 3rd parties using amiibo. While it would be cool to see 3rd party characters, I doubt that they'd release a figure of their own. In all likelihood, we'll see third parties use the amiibo figures to unlock extras such as skins or items in their games.
Which isn't all bad if you think about it. I'm more inclined to buy a third party game, that I don't care about, if it has Nintendo first party content in it. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Plus more amiibo support would make me buy those figures too.
Well that didn't take long
The main thing is at the moment only the Japanese version supports the Circle Pad Pro. If that is changed I will get it.
Normally I am not a big fan of jets but I have to admit that the jets with Nintendo designs on them look quite cool!
@6ch6ris6
No reason why it would be a New 3DS exclusive. This one's an example of being an enhanced game.
Though, the original supported the circle pad pro in Japan, so I'm pretty sure theyre just copy pasting the controls while trying to make a big deal out of it.
I might have to upgrade my copy that I never really played more then an hour. Not that I wouldn't like it as I've played many in the series but just got distracted.
I like this idea, I hope we get it sometime soon! And I just thought wouldn't be cool if they did the same with steel diver sub wars?
Cool. Simple uses of Amiibo like this are great. No harm and yet it's value added for the figurine. Of course, we should expect deeper more interesting uses in other games, but this is fun.
@Goginho "Younger" collectors? I have a feeling that there will be many old people like me buying up figurines. Parents will get them for their kids while enjoying them as a physical representation of game characters they have loved throughout their lives. It may very well be in many, many games which is a good thing. It just adds value to the figurines. I do hope there are more uses that use storage space on the figurines to make their behavior in games more unique over time. More Super Smash Bros. style integration.
The Fox plane should of been a color of a Arwing, also it's starting to seem like I should get some Amiibo's even though I don't really want to...
Spend a small fortune on figures to get a new design on a plane that has no effect on gameplay. Rip off. All these types of games that rely on or make use of figures are a con. I for one refuse to buy them.
Any enemy pilot unfortunate enough to witness Luigi's death stare is certain to get shot down...
I think those saying "this should be paid DLC instead" are missing the point of Amiibos:
If it was paid DLC you'll have to buy each content separately per game which is costly, but if you own just 1 Amiibo, then depending on who it is, you can use it to unlock more stuff without paying extra in many games.
ie: let's say the Mario Amiibo is going to be compatible with 10 games in the future, that's 10 extra content for the price of 1 Amiibo, but if it was paid DLC and you got charged for them extras in them games, unless it comes to a £1 each (i've yet to see £1 DLC yet) you're getting you're moneys worth.
My advice for Amiibo buyers is to avoid the obscure characters for now (ie: Little Mac) and focus on one's that you know will be in alot of other games too (ie: Yoshi).
@Worthy Finally, somebody who gets it!
You also get the figurine along with the DLC as well, making it both a physical and digital purchase at the same time. If you buy amiibos you like, odds are you'll be buying the games they are in as well and likely getting even more for free.
@Worthy
Great point. Nintendo could even use the Amiibo sales to determine which characters are popular and thus gauging interest in new sequels/spin offs.
For me Amiibo is like a figurine+, I am buying for the character and everything else is extra.
Would've been cool if the Fox Amiibo made the fighter jet into an Arwing.
@aaronsullivan There will be many old people buying these figurines, sure, but there will be many many more younger people buying these (just an intuition) and trying to collect as many. I'm one all for the games, and my main concern is that content will begin to suffer due to Amiibo, where devs exclusively include content unlocked by the, arguably, over-priced figures. Simple DLC would suffice in my books, but if I one day have to buy certain Amiibo in order to experience a game to its fullest, then that's going to be a bummer. I'm not againts figures in general. Personally, I love merchandise, but it's the connection that this merchandise has to the actual digital capability that makes it different than simple figurines / collectibles / plushies...whatever, you know. Hopefully you can understand my skepticism or concern that comes from this, and if you don't, then meh whatevs.
All in all it's a neat idea, but it kinda feels forced and perhaps even generic imo, so I hope it just ends up being a gimmicky fad that doesn't turn into a certain norm. On a natural seperate level, there is the content (games) and there is the merchandise. However, with this concept I feel as if Nintendo wanted to combine the two in order to create something interesting to attract consumers, just becasue they can (technology-wise).
@sinalefa I hope that does happen and we get games like F-Zero or Punch Out returning because Captain Falcon and Little Macs Amiibo sold so well, that they wouldn't have thought about remaking them games otherwise.
@Prof_Clayton you are right, you're getting a figure and extra content for loads of games too.
@eza obviously this game isn't for you since you already own it. What about those that don't own it? This is a fantastic game. If this motivates people to buy it then by all means. Just ignore this article if it doesn't pertain to you.
I liked the first game but it kept on being placed on the backlog list of games i played a fair amoint but didnt get close to completing. Not sure if i'll get this 1, revws will help me decide
Now THERE'S a surprise. I'd get the game again, definitely. It was cool. Would have preferred just an update though. Perhaps this time, I'll pay attention to the story.
They announced it like a week ago, it was even in japanese DIrect...
I personally think this is cool. Amiibo is only worthwhile for me if there are a lot of games that use them. I have no interest in the Smash or Kart functionality, but knowing there are many games with different quirky benefits would definitely increase my likelihood of purchasing. Right now it's just the Samus 1 for me.
I have a friend who loves the Ace Combat series. I've never played an aerial combat game (unless you count Sin and Punishment). The Amiibo feature is a good incentive.
@Goginho
I hear you and I almost wrote a little more to temper what I said. It could be abused if really significant functionality was hidden behind the figurines. Especially if having one wasn't enough for each game. So far I think Nintendo is doing pretty well though
Those designs on those planes look pretty sick, but I don't know if this type of game is for me. Maybe if they released a demo I'd find out if I like it.
ODD
@aaronsullivan Yeah, this is just something that I never would've expected to come. I'm sure Nintendo know what they're doing with Amiibo and, admittedly, I may be misinformed about it at the moment, so we'll just have to wait and see how this concept unfolds
@Kobeskillz people who don't own it can buy the original game for less money, or much less if they buy second hand.
People with more money than sense (which, right now, includes anyone thinking about buying into amiibo) can buy exactly the same game.
If you play AC 'properly' you play in cockpit view and never touch the auto-maneuvre button, so would only see the skins when watching a replay.
And it "pertains to" me because I've been looking forward to a new AC game for 3DS, and this is not a new game.
I can't believe people are cheering on this transparent money-grabbing scheme. It seems to me that a lot of the commenters just try to adopt the same tone as the article so that they don't actually have to think for themselves.
How is it a good thing that development time and money is being spent creating features that you won't see unless you pay more money to the publisher?
I would rather that time and money were better spent: for instance on creating new games, new stories... but no - you'd rather buy a piece of plastic which cost pennies to produce at a massive mark-up instead.
What's happened to gamers these days?
More Amiibo, very nice!
AC3D was a remake of AC2?! BRB, headed to Amazon!
@CanisWolfred Lol yeah i have no idea why they didn't market it as such. Even reviewers missed it and i only realised once I started playing. Its pretty awesome and you can get it for peanuts now.
love the bowser themed A10 thunderbolt 2 paintjob
The Fox skin is such a sad missed opportunity to include an arwing.
But this was one of the best AC games in ages (well, with a somewhat remake of 2, you cant go wrong)
Looking forward ti it
Being an Ace Combat fanatic I'll be getting this regardless but as others have said, kinda of a missed opportunity for Nintendo to get involved and create some Nintendo themed bonus missions.
If they weren't already working on it, I'd ask that Project Aces assist on the next Starfox title.
@shane1228
Something many people don't know is that AHL actually has nothing to do with Assault Horizon. At all. It's a remake of Ace Combat 2 and titled Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble in Japan.
So they're releasing an updated version of a previous retail title as a new game on the same system?! This sounds like a pretty petty cash grab to me in the same vein as the many different Street Fighter 2 releases. They're basically saying "screw you" to those of us who bought the original version (well, original 3DS version)! I'm certainly not spending another $40 on essentially the same game. The least they could do would be to offer the amiibo support as a free DLC update for the original version, but I'm not holding out much hope for that.
Perfect timing for Online Multiplayer play? I think so. The first game was awesome! Online I buy. No online I skip. Its a perfect game for online play
If it utilizes the New 3DS well I will get it. Loved the original version.
The Ambiios aren't even out yet, and developers are just beginning to really toy around with the concept. People are going to have a $12 figure that will likely provide various kinds of bonus content to dozens upon dozens of games for both the WiiU/3DS. That is a pretty substantial value to have. Now not all of the features may interest a person, but the same goes for ANY DLC. There are thousands upon thousands of weapon/character/skin/level packs for most games. A lot of those suck, but you don't have to buy/use. If you like them...well you have to plunk down $5-$15 for each piece of DLC then maybe pay $15-$30 for season packs. With the Ambiio, you get various functions at a low price without every rebuying the Ambiio itself. The ideas right now are simple, but again the product isn't even out.
@BulbasaurusRex
lol. That isn't uncommon to do, and not just by Capcom. There are tons of GOTY/PH/GH/Definitive/Ultimate/Director'sCut releases that are enhancements of games that have already been released on the very same system. The companies don't give out anything free to original buyers, nor are the original buyers owed anything. The original Ace Combat 3DS game will be almost 3 years old when the new rendition arrives. It isn't like the new version was released a month ago. If you don't feel the new additions warrant purchasing the new version, that is completely understandable. Those of us who own the original, aren't owed anything though as we got what we paid for.
@eza honestly just don't buy it. Stop complaining.
@darthllama Just because others do it doesn't make it right. If they want to update a game, just release an update for it like with "Retro City Rampage" and many other games. Even making it paid DLC is acceptable if it's worthwhile new content. As you mentioned, this is one of the reasons Capcom's popularity has plummeted in recent years. I'm glad Nintendo themselves have never gone this greedy route with any of their first or second party games (well, maybe once if you count "Link's Awakening DX").
I REALLY hope they localize this (and put it on the frickin' eshop for Christ's sake!!!). Wish they'd do a Wii U version
They'd better allow for a save transfer... My 300 hours IS NOT going to waste.
I own the 2012 game, so this is a pass for me if it even comes out here. I still need to put time into the version I own as I've barely touched it since I bought it.
@Grumblevolcano It's a plane. The Skyward Sword reference certainly seems to make sense to me.
Also, it's only the most recent Zelda title (not counting Wind Waker) so I really don't think it's that strange.
@Windy I can't believe it looks like it doesn't have online play. I assumed it would. I haven't played this game before, but I can't see myself springing for it without online play!
@Samurairu Same here. This game is ready for 4 player skirmishes online.
