Rex Rocket is a title that came to our attention earlier in the year, and it successfully passed its crowdfunding target for a PC release with the developer — Castle Pixel — keen to also bring it to Wii U and 3DS. In our interview with the studio's Robert Maher, he explained that "bringing Rex Rocket to anything with a 'Nintendo' seal on it would be a dream come true".
It seems that the dream has come true, with project backers receiving the following update.
Lots of exciting new developments since the last time we posted! In Castle Pixel news, we are now officially licensed Wii U developers, so Rex will be coming to a Nintendo Wii U sometime after the official PC game release.
That PC release is planned for January 2014, but its certainly good news that the retro 2D title is coming to the Wii U eShop, with Maher describing it to us as follows.
Our inspirations come, primarily, from the old school days of gaming. Rex Rocket is mainly inspired by three games — Mega Man, Metroid, and Cave Story. We want the shoot'n'scoot gameplay of Mega Man and Cave Story, mashed with the exploration and item upgrades found in Metroid and Cave Story.
You can check out the pitch video from the successful Kickstarter campaign below; are you looking forward to this on the Wii U?

Hey that's great! I'm looking forward to this one. The music sold me. I really hope they release a soundtrack and it wasn't just backer exclusive.
Yes. Yes I am looking forward to this.
Yes
Sure.
Loving this! I would love to buy it for my Wii U. Is just like Megaman.
Iwata once said during a Q&A with investors how somehow he didn't give a damn about major third-parties jumpimg off board because they're just about a 100 versus 10,000s of indie developers ready to jump onto new opportunities. Nintendo first-party games, indie games, and the odd enlightened major third-party games will make this console a great platform to play on, if that's not already the case from a Wii U owner's perspective.
Gameplay of Cavestory, music of Mega Man, upgrade system of Metroid....
Epic.
Cave Story, Mega Man and Metroid? Sold.
Dat soundtrack
Looks fun.
Seriously, if all this stuff starts showing up on Wii U, the eShop is going to be a pretty impressive storehouse of indy platformers. I guess you figure that people like me are making games now and probably grew up playing Nintendo games so of course we all want to put something on the current Nintendo console if we can. And Nintendo is game for it nowadays, so win-win, right?
I just hope it pays off for all these indies and Nintendo can get that user base up. How can Nintendo leverage all the indies to sell some consoles, I wonder. Hmm...
I think of Sparkster when I watch that video.
@Fazermint Yes That Soundtrack !!
A must buy for me!

@Retro_on_theGo the OST remix album will be a kickstarter backer only release, but the original soundtrack and a collection of hardware based versions of the soundtrack will be available through my bandcamp
This game looks pretty cool to me. It is certainly on my radar now, and it also helps to have a good soundtrack too!
Lookin good... lookin real good.
I'll DL this one as soon as it drops.
Nintendo: the foster parent of genuine, quality new game devs.
