In late July we published a list of our favourite Wii U and 3DS Smash Bros. screens so far. Masahiro Sakurai, the popular designer that leads the franchise, has been releasing a new screenshot every weekday, alternating between Wii U and 3DS images. In most cases they show funny poses or cool moves in action, and occasionally reveal a new stage.
While contemplating reporting on a Metroid: Other M stage that had been shown last week, it occurred to us that once-in-a-blue-moon screens don't necessarily do these regular reveals justice. Consider this the first of a weekly compilation, then, bringing together the screenshots from the previous week; all thank's to the Smash Bros. Director's Room Miiverse community.
Last week's screens include two planes swooping rather close together in the Wuhu Island stage, the image that was posted with confirmation that character outlines can be customised on the 3DS, and the Metroid: Other M Pyrosphere stage. Because that's one of the most adored and popular Metroid titles, right?

Nice.
Thanks for doing this. I never go to Miiverse so I am missing this. I also miss the old Dojo.
And this way people without Wii U can also check these beautiful screens.
I don't know about others, but I certainly adored Other M.
This is really shaping up to be an epic Smash Bros.!
Not enough 3DS screens. Seriously, I want to see what that console can deliver!
As for SSB4, this game is looking amazing! Maybe it will be a 2014 release date after all... and the Wii U version sure is looking pretty. Hopefully the 3DS gets the Pilotwings (?) stage too.
Luigi and Mega Man duking it out is the one for me!
The more news I see, the more patience I lose.
honestly that metroid other m level is the first screenshot that i've been impressed with graphically, and truly separates it from Brawl. Yeah Link's shield actually looked metal and had reflections and his hair was flowy and what not, but look at the dramatic lighting on bowser, the texture of the stage, everything truly looks like a big step up from Brawl in that screenshot.
I guess the generally flat lighting of most stages, the cartoony and simple look of many characters (mario/luigi, megaman, icarus, etc) doesn't serve to show off the graphics of this game.
Smash is one of my favorite all time series, and it will be fantastic on Wii U no doubt. That's what matters.
But, with the extra power of the Wii U I was expecting more of a noticeable difference between this and Brawl, because this sort of just looked like an up-res of Brawl to me till I saw that screenshot.
@TromboneGamer
Exactly! Other M is my favorite Metroid game, in fact.
I think its better we don't have the Dojo this time around as I feel it spoilt too much of the game's content. If you followed the Brawl one, there was barely any surprises left in the game by the time you played it.
Keeps some secrets secret till players discover them...
Judging by the Wuhu Island, I think it's safe to say that a pilotwings stage will appear on 3DS.
That Other M stage looks epic. I'll have a lot of fun dukin' it out in that sweet ring (especially if Ridley is playable).
@ThomasBW84
Please make this a weekly column. I can's seem to be ever able to keep track with those pesky screenshots.
It's interesting that the pilot wings stage is on the wii u. Especially since it is of wuhu island. Could this mean a pilot wings for wii u.
Metroid Other M has the same gameplay of the 2D games with some new stuff than can be only made in 3D .I don't get why people think is the worst game in the series.The only fault of the game is the story but the gameplay is good.
@Yodelman64 That would be interesting.
@Randomname19 But it is a rare example of a game, whichs story was SO bad, that it dragged the whole game down.
If you took damage by high temperature rooms in other metroid games, it was YOUR fault for not finding the varia suit. Now you HAVE to take damage willingly becaus eyou need permission to activate that life saving gadget.
If you could seperate story and gameplay, other M would certainly be more praised because gameplay wise, it was one of the better games, but the story makes so little sense AND sneaks its way directly into the gameplay that its just unbareable, at least it was for me.
Don't you think that you are 2 months late?
i liked Metroid other m's story. if samus was a male I don't think many people would have taken issue with the emotional aspect of the game, but because samus is a woman its ok for her to be a silent killer, but not ok for her to have emotion... there were several revelations in the plot, ridley's species, samus going from federation to lone bounty hunter and back again, maybe sylux's backstory and reason for his hatred of the federation. the only complaints I had were that the deleter subplot went nowhere, you didn't get to explore sector zero, and I beat the final boss segment in 2 seconds (simply ready the wiimote at the center of the screen during the cutscene and fire a missle when prompted, viola!)
my fav screenshot isn't listed but it's todays where the villager looks like he's got luigi's nose.
EDIT: those shadows in the luigi vs megaman pic are absolutely gorgeous. the circle blobs in the 3ds screens are shameful in comparison, tho rightfully so with the limited capabilities when compared.
@sinalefa You can also check Smashbros.com for the screenshots.
@Azooooz Oh, I'm sure there'll be plenty of issues before the game launches. I never wanted to do a screen a day, and the thought just never popped up before.
It's here now
@ThomasBW84 You're right!!
The Other M stage just looks so epic in HD...it kind of hypes me up for the next Smash Bros. Even though the gameplay and style of SSB4 might be very similar to Melee and Brawl as far as we know (Which I'm not a fan of because I like to see NEW stuff, be it gameplay modes, gimmicks, or game mechanics, thrown into NEW games, not just "refined" gameplay with new levels and characters and some cool HD flash), the graphics in this stage really make this Smash Bros. look a lot more epic...or different! Exciting!
METROID STAGE FTW MAN!
And the Pikmin stage looks awesome too!
Thanks for the pics I always miss out!
I would like to see some video, some of these screen shots are not very impressive.
Well, opinions of Other M aside, that stage is genuinely gorgeous. It's my favorite of these screens.
@Einherjar
What i find odd is that MGS4 has a similar sequence where old snake has to crawl through a microwaved corridor and at the end the little robot did everything on its own. So otacon sent snake to cook himself for nothing. Dont think anyone complained about that
Woah! Wuhu Island looks like it could be part of Wind Waker HD!
Ooooo I like the planes stage. Speaking of which making a weekly screenshot feature was already done by IGN since the beginning. Get with the times mayne put together every screenshot before this week in another feature.
For those who have looked in-depth at ALL the screenshots: doesn't the Skyloft stage look really unfinished? Like there isn't much color to it and the statue of the goddess is really jagged all over. Sure, in Skyward Sword the statue was a little bit jagged but no where near that of the SSB4 version. Probably because they're still refining things but how come all the other stages looked absolutely fine?
@sinalefa MANY people complained about that, and i had MANY discussions about that part.
The thing is, i remember it that way: They didnt know what was at the end of that tunnel, and since Metal Gear Mk II. cant defend himself against, say, attack drones, Snake came with him.
I could make that up out of false memory, but thats at least how i try to convince myself that the whole scene was unneccessary, but not entirely pointless
That said, is was dramatic as hell. Letting Samus almost die although BOTH, the commander AND samus know that she has the varia suit and he very well could have authorized protective gear (it also boosts samus defense) a heck of a lot sooner.
The difference here is, that snakes situation was extremely dangouress and very well life threatening but they were quite sure that he could make it. In metroids case, samus was coocked alive, while threatened by hordes of monsters AND lava pits, so her situation was anything BUT survivable, and thats what bugged me.
I could totally understand that missles usage, beam technology, bombs etc were prohibited, since it was samus first mission were she wasnt alone. But protective gear ? Really ? Not to speak of ridley. Continuity wise, she already fought him 2 times (4 counting prime), faced the metroid queen, AND mother brain twice and NOW shes scared ?
That would have made perfect sense if this game served as a prequel and i would have liked it a lot. Thats the stuff that MAKES you into a professional and "cold" bounty hunter, but it came close to the end of the canon, it didnt make sense whatsoever.
But like i said, i would love to see another metroid made by the same team, since its gameplay was really really good and i loved the adaptation of the classic 2D gameplay on a 3D playing field, but please les someone else write the story or at least, let nintendo supervise it.
@triforcepower73 Maybe its just a screencap problem. You dont know how fast the actual playing field is moving, and that the background was rendered with lower polygons to save recources while it was offscreen.
What worrys me a little bit more is, how many stages consist of a simple "flying island" with just a matching background image, and few of them are actually integrated into the scenary (Like the floating animal crossing stage and, for example, hyrule castle from brawl / melee)
I learned to love the smaller stages over time, but i also liked the bigger, more involved ones.
@Einherjar
Fair points, but as far as I know, the story came from Yoshio Sakamoto himself, yet people unfairly bashed Team Ninja for it.
@sinalefa To be honest, i really dont know who was responsible for the story, but it doesnt matter. It was bad whoever made it, Sakamoto or not.
I absolutely respect Team Ninja and love what they are doing. The fact alone that the answer to their first 3D Ninja Gaiden ("its way too hard", "too small audience because its to difficult") was an even harder version is just brilliant. Screw mainstream, go with your fandom.
And like i said, i really loved otherMs gameplay and how well they managed to implement all gadgets and abilitys of the 2D games and made them work in 3D, only few games manage that without feeling like a completely different game.
But i wont change my mind about how incompetent that story was written and implemented. It would have been an almost perfect prequel.
Why does samus need authorization for the stronger suit version ? because they were unsure if she could handle it. BAM, biggest plot problem (almost) solved. But then the whole "mother" arc wouldnt fit. But it would be a sacrafice woth making if you ask me.
All in all: The story was so dumb that it dragged the whole experience down with it, and i bet people would have praised it, if every story bit would have been cut out (otherM - Abridged )
And i stand by my opinion: Let someone else handle the story doesnt matter who was it that made otherMs), make it less melodramatic and Team Ninja can make as much Metroid games as the nightsky has stars
And i guess even critics must admit, that one of the best looking Smash stages so far comes from otherM.
@sinalefa I just took the lack of varia suit being the commander testing samus' loyalty while acknowledging the fact that she is more then capable of surviving those sequences, based on my playthru anyway as I had no problem. she is an accomplished warrior and was able to prove to the commander that she is a force.
the ridley scare scene was a moment that sako stated he wanted to implement in an earlier Metroid game but was unable to, I just chalked it up to her shock and stress of this monster once again returning and in an environment where people she cared for were, on the capsule, all the while knowing had she not saved the birdy, a great parallel to the baby Metroid, earlier he would not be there. I loved that scene and it gave samus a real sense of humanity.
(I posted this on my smartphone and it glitched so I hopped on my laptop to repost it so if the earlier post shows my bad)
also, retro irked the continuity of the story imo even tho the prime games rocked.
@3Daniel
TBH I feel that portraying Samus with doubts, fears and insecurities make her to me more relatable and more human. Sakamoto took a risk when doing this, and not everyone would like it.
But I think we have derailed this comment section long enough.
Nice screenshots I like Mario and Luigi pic hopefully as good as it looks!
Nice screenshots I like Mario and Luigi pic hopefully as good as it looks!
Why an Other:M stage Needs more Bryyo from corruption!
@Blue_Yoshi Good for IGN, I didn't see that. And probably no, on the second request.
@hcfwesker Seriously! Prime needs more love in Smash!
Admittingly the Other M stage looks great; (personal opinions on the game aside) but there are so many creative and gorgeous planets, environments, etc. that Retro created.
Frigate Orpheon was alright in Brawl, but what about a light/dark switching area from Echoes, Elysium(?), the Pirate Homeworld, or Phaaze?
Imagine the stage hazards in them too.
I don't care what anyone says, the fight with Ridley in Other M was by far the best in the series. Cool looking stage as well.
@sinalefa They are also on the official site; http://www.smashbros.com/us/
hurry up nintendo and put sonic back in smash bros!!! and make him less cheap!!
