No game is ever really perfect, and there are things that developers want to add with the benefit of hindsight. In the case of ZombiU, lead writer and story designer Gabrielle Shrager has admitted that if she had her way, she'd add in more melee weapons to spice things up a bit.
Speaking to Game Informer, Shrager said:
More melee weapons would be one of the first things on our list. Give me a halberd to keep those zombies back! The pickings in the Tower of London’s armory would feel like Christmas!
The game's sole close combat option was the iconic cricket bat - inspired by the cult British zombie movie Shaun of the Dead - but Shrager explains that the bat wasn't intended to play as big a role as it eventually did:
The cricket bat was designed to be used almost as a last resort, significant because it’s such a violent assault on your senses. Players quickly learn that it won’t save their bacon against more than one zombie at a time (either the hard way, or by listening to the Prepper). Some players depend on it entirely instead of scavenging for ammo and new gear, and these players deserve a richer melee experience.
Do you think that bigger, better melee weapons would enrich the ZombiU experience, or would they merely unbalance the challenge? Drop a comment to let us know what you think.

The halberd could be helpfull
Melee weapons would be awesome for taking down zombies. In a post-apocalyptic world, guns probably wouldn't be the first thing you'd come across. You find bats, boards and anything you can hit someone with.
Possible dlc?
I'm quite glad they didn't, it could have over-complicated things.
I've seen this in reference to what they might change in a sequel, not DLC. Personally, I do think we needed more melee weapons, I prefer sharp objects to blunt ones.
Ah, if only they went with "Evil Dead" instead of Shaun, we might have had an electric chainsaw!
This is from GameInformer, so the original source is the magazine and should get credit somewhere in this post since it was the source it was stolen from in typical Nintendo Everything fashion.
@CoffeeWithGames Agreed. A lot of sites do that, though. NL is just one of many on the internet. I work in "actual real life media". If we didn't source something we would be fired and possibly sued for plagiarism. I wonder how legit some of these sites actually are, or if it just a couple dudes (and a girl) sitting behind their computers searching the other gaming sites for stories they don't have.... Hmmmm.
I've read the interview on gameinformer magazine and was quite disappointed at the interviewer…everyone has their own opinion of Zombie U but it was obvious that she didnt like it and her last few questions reflected that.
It seems that Gameinformer is good for every console except Nintendo. They'll talk about it and give them the front page on occasion but its like going to a "ninty is only for kids not real gamers" forum. But hey history shows that Nintendo success does even better with negativity so i guess its good.
What happened to games being great for gameplay and overall fun experience not being tied in to these console nonsense…
…my apologies that just needed to be said…i having fun with Zombie U and cant wait for Zombie U 2!!!!
Perhaps a chainsaw, meat cleaver, katana sword, frying pan, and hatchet or axe would be a good idea if they ever need a ZombiU sequel. Guns is still alright but there are way too many too much.
@ShadJV if they do make a sequel I hope it comes to the 3DS. I think more melee weapons are better. Using just a cricket bat ( which by they way takes forever to defeat an enemy ) isn't useful and wastesa lot of time that could be used for looting. When Left 4 Dead 2
... first came out I loved using the axe and chainsaw. It was a great way to conserve ammo. If a Zombi-U 2 does release it should really allow weapons like on L4D2. ( I accidently pushed reply )
PS: I guess Zombi-U 2 can't be for the 3DS since it isn't Zombi-3D
Halberds are so passé. Give me morning stars, flails and billhooks.
im sure i remember seeing a pick axe in one trailer, but yeah i agree more melee weapons.
Maybe in the sequal they should do it so u can pick anything up to use as a weapon.
Golf clubs anyone?
Maybe ZombiU 2 is coming soon... who knows?
@retro_player_22
It's all been done before! A frying pan is so trite now. The cricket bat was awesome because of the Shaun O The Dead resemblance.
Now, is it me, or do I remember a Pick-Axe being in one of the preview videos for this game? I haven't played it through yet so it may still come but, am I not right in thinking that? I think a CricketBat was ok but I still use it as a last resort. It'd have been nice if you got baseball bats as an aesthetic difference if nothing else.
For a sequel though swords would be a great choice alongside firearms! How about if the sequel is really the prequel, set in John Dee's time?
@CoffeeWithGames @Boo_Buster Game Informer is credited as the original source in the second paragraph of this feature.
Yeah I say you should be able to use things like crow bars and other tools, not just for melee but for other uses as well. Take a crow bar, whack a few zombies then prize a door open for looting? Also you could pick things up and throw them? The noise would make a good destraction.
Man, I thought that bat was perfect for what it was functioning as, mechanically. It worked, but still made you feel powerless. Like every smack was a desperate one.
That made it worthwhile scrounging for bullets. They weren't actually that scarce if you kept searching. I think if they added a wider range of melee weapons they'd run the risk of confusing what the game is about. It's not about being a total baddonkey . Then again, the wide range of contradictory reviews kinda suggests that that was the case anyway.
More melee weapons would be welcome, but would have to be handled carefully. They'd have to be as valuable as guns, and as difficult and rewarding to obtain. Perhaps there could be some assortment of selectable melee weapons with strengths and weaknesses? Or maybe you can only carry one at a time? Perhaps more advanced weapons like halberds are harder to use until your character levels up a bit.
Could we just get some through DLC?
I think the difficulty is what makes it scary and the bat is a huge part of that no game has ever made me feel tense or helpless not even silent hill (as much as I love that series) although it would have been cool to unlock loads of new weapons after your first playtrough!
zombiu a great game, not finished it yet but its much better than half the crap they say is good.as for weapons and guns zombiu 2 will sort that out.
An Ice-Hockey stick of course!
@Freak-Show ZombiU not ZombiDS! Keep it on Wii U!
Save it for the sequel. Because it's going to be one hell of a sequel.
I'm still playing it and it's an exceptional game! My real complaint is that I can't run over the zombies on a tank. But with that option maybe the game would've lasted 10 minutes
I suppose a Wii U gamepad would be a good weapon?
Improve upon the concept with a good sequel and you will have my support Ubisoft.
It's hard to say, if you add more melee weapons it kinda takes away the thrill of trying not to die and losing your abilities and weapons.
I would have loved a crowbar, and beat them up "Gordon-Freeman" style.
Seriously, a few different choices would have been nice. It's still a great game, but logically the survivors would have eventually found something more effective.
@Shiryu Remember this game takes place in an apocalyptic place you aren't going to find a working chainsaw that easy, let alone an electric chainsaw... You should try and pay more attention to the game surroundings.
@RantingThespian I agree they should have put a crowbar or a wrench of some sort.
@LoneWolf01 eh? It's modern day London, surely there are hardware stores over there...?
