Bad North (Switch eShop)

A slice of Viking strategic combat right out of the heart of Scandinavia’s indie development scene, Bad North is a smart yet intrinsically accessible real-time strategy title. Swedish developer Plausible Concept calls it ‘micro-strategy’ and it's the perfect encapsulation of a minimalist approach that covers everything from unit management to the Monument Valley-style isometric art style. There's not really anything quite like it on Switch, so if you're scared to pull the trigger on the full game, we recommend giving the demo a whirl. You won't regret it.

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch)

The demo for Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics features four of the 51 games: Dominos, Four-in-a-Row, President, and Slot Cars. Local multiplayer is available for all, so the aptly named Local Multiplayer Guest Edition is definitely worth downloading, especially if you've got multiple Switches in the household.

The Touryst (Switch eShop)

The Touryst has a perfect balance of atmospheric puzzling, leisurely exploring and minigame madness that'll keep you thoroughly entertained from start to finish, and its collection of tiny little voxel islands are a joy to discover, bursting with surprises to uncover and presented in a truly dazzling art-style that's achieved whilst performing flawlessly on Switch. It arguably got a little lost in the flood of games that deluged the console at the end of 2019, but check out its demo and you're sure to get swept up in this joyous little adventure.

New Super Lucky's Tale (Switch)

New Super Lucky’s Tale is a lovely little throwback to the quality 3D platformers of old, and hugely enjoyable for gamers of all ages. The brief demo on the eShop will give you a good idea of what to expect from the full game, and is also perfect for testing it out with younger gamers before parting with your hard-earned cash for something they're not interested in. We're willing to bet they'll love it, though.

Blasphemous (Switch eShop)

Blasphemous is a beautifully crafted Soulslike/Metroidvania action game set in an unhinged, deliriously gory world filled with well-designed enemies, satisfyingly meaty combat and some truly memorable and grotesque boss battles. If that sounds appealing but you're not ready to commit, why not download the demo and sample around an hour of the game, eh? It's a good 'un.

Ape Out (Switch eShop)

A violent, top-down beat 'em up with a procedurally-improvised jazz soundtrack might not like your cup of tea on paper, but Ape Out is one of the most unique, original and wonderful indie games on the console and we urge you to give it a try. If you're not willing to shell out for the full game, the demo is there to give you a taster. Go on, go ape!

Fitness Boxing (Switch)

Fitness Boxing is a breezy, energetic game that delivers some light CV and takes pointers from the Just Dance series and various rhythm games to provide a convenient and engaging workout. If you've been tempted in the past but can't justify buying another fitness-focused game that will go unplayed in the long run, give the demo a try to see if it's something you'd stick with.

Blaster Master Zero (Switch eShop)

Blaster Master Zero is a wonderful reimagining of the NES game that polishes the 8-bit edges of the game into something that shines on Switch. With its vehicular platforming and on-foot sections, there's not much that's quite like Blaster Master. Personally, we'd go for the sequel if you're only going to play one Blaster Master, but they're both great games and so the opportunity to sample the first via a demo is very welcome.

Hob: The Definitive Edition (Switch eShop)

A great Switch port courtesy of Panic Button, Hob: The Definitive Edition is a great 3D platformer that arguably got buried in the Switch library. Fortunately, the eShop has a demo to download if it passed you by, and we recommend getting acquainted with this cel-shaded adventure.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny (Switch)

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is arguably a high point for the series and is well worth downloading the demo to see if it's up your alley. If you like it, you'll probably really like it and will enjoy endless hours of strategising with its zany cast of characters. If you simply can't get enough of free Disgaea, Disgaea 4 Complete+ and Disgaea 5 Complete also have demos available. Dood!

Yoku's Island Express (Switch eShop)

Yoku's Island Express is a genuine breath of fresh air, combining pinball and Metroidvania mechanics in a way that feels truly inspired. Add in a calming soundtrack and one of the most appealing fantasy worlds you'll find on the eShop, and you have yourself an instant left-field classic. If the combination of pinball and Metroidvania sounds a bit suspicious, we heartily recommend downloading the demo to allay your fears. It really is a treasure.

ARMS (Switch)

We've got a soft spot for ARMS, and we're not ashamed to take any opportunity to highlight it as an underappreciated gem in the Switch's considerable catalogue. The demo gives you a good idea of the main gameplay and you can play it without limit, although it does spit you out of the Grand Prix at a certain point. Go on, there's no 'arm in it!
