Updated to change the game list from 2022 to 2023! Happy new year!
2022 is dead, long live 2023. Let's hope this year is better and brighter than the last, eh? We've already rounded up our most-anticipated games for 2023, but that tends to cover the big dogs with gigantic marketing budgets, so, why not shine our spotlight on some of the smaller-but-brilliant games coming to the Nintendo Switch this year?
Of course, we won't be repeating any of the games that made it to our big 30 — that means that you won't find games like Outer Wilds, Metal Slug Tactics, Oxenfree II, Octopath Traveler II, Fire Emblem Engage, Advance Wars 1+2, or Hollow Knight: Silksong here. Instead, we hope you'll find some games you didn't even know about before — we certainly did!
Time On Frog Island - 12th July 2022

Bear and Breakfast - 28th July 2022
"A laid-back management adventure game where you play as a well-meaning bear trying to run a B+B in the woods. Hank and his friends find an abandoned shack and, equipped with their teenage ingenuity, turn it into a money-making bed and breakfast scheme for unsuspecting tourists."

"Build the university of your dreams with Two Point Campus, the sim with a twist from the makers of Two Point Hospital. Build, hire staff and run an academic institution packed with wild courses."

Connect with yiayia through engaging conversations, explore a beautiful, relaxing environment, and complete microquests throughout the neighborhood in this thoughtful, bite-sized adventure."
Lonesome Village - August 2022
"A cosy RPG adventure, taking place in a formerly sleepy town in dire need of help. The animal villagers are trying to return to life as normal following a calamitous event which wiped out their homes. And the less said about the mysterious tower which has appeared just outside of town, the better."

Gerda: A Flame In Winter - 1st September 2022

- Round Up: Everything Announced During The Thunderful Digital Showcase
The Spirit and the Mouse - Fall 2022

...and Sports Story. And Silksong.
Words cannot describe how excited I am for Sea of Stars.
@Bret These were the same two games in my head throughout the list.
There were a few games in here that piqued my interest.
So many indies! I'm looking forward to Locomotive, Gerda and Sea of Stars, but so many of these I haven't heard of and will have to look into more carefully.
Little Nemo?!
And is that Aubrey Plaza in Chinatown Detective Agency?
Isn't this the year "Savior" finally releases? That game looked incredible when it launched on Kickstarter a few years ago.
Upcoming Switch games for 2022... no Pocky & Rocky Reshrined

...with the hope that every one of these gets a physical release (many already do).
@NicolausCamp omg I had no idea this existed. I'm adding it to my list
No Pocky & Rocky or Squadron 51? I hope those still come this year - I thought they were both coming in the spring.
I had forgotten about Sea of Stars though, I guess because it's still so far off from being released. The Messenger is a killer game, so these guys know what they're doing. It's been added to the list.
I know one is getting a Physical because of KS but the others be nice if they come as Physical that would improve the chances more will take note of their game.
Unforeseen Incidents (January 27)
OlliOlli World (February 08)
OXENFREE II: Lost Signals (2022)
Sea of Stars and Bomb Rush Cyberpunk really have my attention as of now.
“Of course, we won't be repeating any of the games that made it to our big 30 — that means that you won't find Windjammers 2, OlliOlli World, Card Shark, Outer Wilds, Sports Story, Oxenfree II, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, Metal Slug Tactics, River City Girls 2, or Hollow Knight: Silksong here. Instead, we hope you'll find some games you didn't even know about before — we certainly did!”
C’mon guys, actually read the article!
@Munchlax Damn!! I'm a hypocrite!
Sea of Stars and Bushiden and I'll be golden.
Little Nemo looks disappointingly like an iPhone game
@Purgatorium Sea of Stars is the one I want most by a long shot, but Loco Motive looks good too.
Oh, and is that a joke that the thumbnail looks like Aubrey Plaza?
@Lyricana Yeah, does it look like her or is it just me?
The first Figment is a terrible flat generic narrative of the kind of books you give to kids you are trying to force them into having a condition they do not have.
The game itself has some legs but characters make you want to leave the party as fast as you can.
One game that would be great to pop up on the Switch would be Inscryption. I'd give that the game of the year for 2021
@Purgatorium Enough so that I got the joke!
Some of these have really interesting art styles. I'll definitely check out a few once the reviews are in. Sea of Stars is one I definitely want.
Also, my SD card is in a constant state of zero room.
@BloodNinja it’s a shame. Nemo was a great NES game. Would be awesome to put on the NES online subscription. Underrated early 90’s platformer
Hindsight seems like Edith Finch, but not as good
@BCMT Definitely! I played it all the time in my childhood. It was super easy but just fun to play. Though, the final boss was no slouch.
On my list I got:
Sea of Stars
Hollowknight: Silksong
Pocky and Rocky
Sports Story
Very excited for the LRG for all those (playing not the paying)
My daughter has had a Switch for a while, but my wife got me my own Switch Lite for Christmas (I am a big DS/3ds junkie with an even bigger collection.
I am quickly discovering how many AMAZING indie games are on the Switch. This list has me incredibly excited.
Are there any must have Switch indies that anyone recommends?
I have been playing Axiom Verge and Blasphemous, and just picked up Hollow Knight and Elli.
Oneshot is getting a switch release this year too.
Astroneer looks fun and these days games like Behind the Frame are really starting to appeal. I suspect it’s age lol.
Is Aztech: Forgotten Gods still scheduled for some time this year?
Cardshark and The Stanley Parable are my top 2.
@Guitar_bard I'd really recommend Golf Story, what the golf, jump king, everhood, huntdown, the takeover, undertale, slay the spire, dicey dungeons, horace, darkest dungeon, hades, blazing chrome, project warlock, yoku's island express, wulverblade, sayonara wild hearts. Scanning down my games list I've really enjoyed all of them.
I didn't play games at all for about 15 years, before getting a switch last year, and yeah I agree, the whole world of indie gems is great. I didn't know about all that either. If you follow SwitchCorner on YouTube, he's got a few great hidden gem videos, and does weekly sales round ups, which are handy too. Switch Planet and SwitchUp are good too.
I'm fully up for Cursed To Golf. Looks right up my strasse. And Sports Story soon too please 🙏
@PapaMurphy Thanks so much for the suggestions. I was really getting burnt out on AAA titles, and my PS4 mostly collects dust.
This whole scene reminds me of the NES Era, when creativity was rampant and everything felt new.
Yeah I enjoyed that era too, although I was only young then. I was mad into Probotector and Smash TV, and Super Mario 3 of course, first game I ever completed, took me months haha.
My daughter is only young, she likes playing Dragon Quest XI with me, I've got her her own switch for her birthday in a couple of months, got a fat memory card today, gonna pre load it with loads of games. I'll let her have Dragon Quest too...... maybe 😄
I just need Sea of Stars... Nothing more to say.
Wow that's a lot of unique games to try. Definitely looking forward to Sea of Stars the most, that game like Eastward and CrossCode were some of the more demanding indie RPGs to look forward to and now that I got the other two I just need that one.
Wow, the only one I care of is Sea of Stars, and there are plenty of indie games I'm excited about for this year XD. Different tastes, clearly.
One game I'm specially excited about (apart from SoS) is Souldiers. It looks really great!
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/11/pixel-art-metroidvania-souldiers-brings-puzzles-platforming-and-combat-to-switch
@Specter_of-the_OLED I also heard a lot about Unsighted, it seems to be really good. Still have to get it though, but check it out. Seeing your tastes are similar to mine, that game may be for you as well.
@the_beaver Oh I already got that game on Steam during the holiday sale but not on Switch yet. May had to double dipped for that one on Switch too if it ever got a physical release someday.
Not sure how a game developed by a Sega subsidiary counts as an indie; it's not like Streets of Rage 4 or Monster Boy where it's one of their IPs being worked on by indie developers
NL: "You won't find Oxenfree II on this list."
NL: *puts Oxenfree II on this list
So many games, so little time. I'd like to at least try about a third of these, but I'll probably never get to more than one or two. I'm just constantly at risk of hitting the cap on my eshop wishlist at this point.
Sea of Stars, Bomb Rush and SacriFire are the only ones appealing to me on this list. But more great indie games is always a good thing.
sea of stars is number 1 on my list!!
Sea of Stars is one I've had on my wishlist for ages. Rune Fencer Illyia has also interested me since the first gameplay was shown. She Dreams Elsewhere I had never heard of but it looks absolutely gorgeous.
Most of them I've never heard of...
But I cannot believe I'm missing Sports Story and FIST in this list! 33 indie games and not those? Wow.
I'm missing metroidvanias here too. Also interested in Bushiden and Gestalt.
Anyway, Two Point Campus and specially Sea of Stars will likely be day one!
I've been waiting for Sail Forth since it was showcased in the Indie Direct in what, early 2021?
@Guitar_bard Stardew Valley for sure. Sayonara Wild Hearts for a brief but beautiful experience. Dead Cells, Hades, Paradise Killer, Slay the Spire and Darkest Dungeon are all top tier games.
Since Silksong will be available next year, I'll be putting my coins on Sea of Stars
@JasmineDragon Thank you!!! These games are all on my watch list now.
Admittedly it’s a reach, but I’m hoping for more info and/or announcements on or of the following coming to Switch in a Direct:
.. Granted these are not all “Indies” per se, but they’re mostly digital offerings.
… Wun can only hope!
Of this list I’m piqued by:
Hope they turn out well!
… Wun can only hope.
It is surprising that Mineko's Night Market was slated for release in 2019 and it is still not out, I was looking forward to that game too.
@BloodNinja @BCMT I agree with you about the Little Nemo game. I want to be excited, but I just can’t get over how the darn thing looks like Flash game from the early 2000s. I’ve been itching to revisit the Capcom classic though.
As for me on this list, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Sea of Stars, and Oxenfree 2… I’d have bought them already if they had open preorders. Also looking forward to Blossom Tales 2 on the Switch indie front… and Omori tomorrow, of course… even though it may be a while before I play it, with me needing to start TMNT and The Quarry yet.
@somnambulance Nemo was such a great game for me as a kid. As an adult, I appreciate the imagery it gave child-me, but no longer seek to play it.
@BloodNinja I haven’t played Nemo in maybe 20 years, so I’ll admit there’s a degree of curiosity as to whether or not it holds up or if I just have nostalgia goggles for the title
I'll need reliable reviews to be honest however there is a tonne of interesting games there.
Two Point Campus, Portion Permit, Sea of Stars, Onde, Oxenfree II, Sacrifire & She Dreams Elsewhere. Only these games really tempt me to spend out so far I'd say.
So many exciting little gems coming up and I've yet to play so many on my wishlist... Times are great for indie game and the growing wholesome genre fans!
Lots of good stuff coming up!
@Panopticon Ha, oops — that's left in there from when this list went live the first time, in January. Initially Oxenfree II was on the big games list, but we did a little swapping so that there would be more room on the big list for newer games
@KateGray No worries Kate, I'm just razzing. You're still my favorite writer
@Panopticon PHEW! (and thank you!!)
