Review Mega Man (Wii U eShop / NES)
Fight, Mega Man, for everlasting re-release!
By now, if you want to play Mega Man you probably already have it. It's been previously released for the Wii and 3DS Virtual Consoles, after all. But if you've somehow managed to let the game pass you by — or just aren't sure if it's worth upgrading your old Virtual Console version — we're happy to...
Review Mega Man (3DS eShop / NES)
The NES experience, now on 3DS
A while back, the 3DS Virtual Console got Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, the Blue Bomber's first Game Boy outing. It's a decent conversion of the console game, but many would agree that the handheld Mega Man games didn't really begin to shine until later in the series. Curiously, instead of working their way closer to...
Review Mega Man (Wii Virtual Console / NES)
The Blue Bomber's debut
The Mega Man series will need no introduction to most gamers; this game spawned five sequels on the NES, not to mention numerous games on other systems over the years. Mega Man has come a long way since his début way back in 1987. This originally story spins the yarn that Dr Light created six master robots for industrial...

About The Game
Join the blue bomber in his first-ever adventure as he battles the evil Dr. Wily and his robotic henchmen to restore peace to a troubled world. Mega Man is a super-robot created by the genius scientist Dr. Light.

Finally! The Mega Man games are coming! I'll only be getting 1-3 though. I was never fond of 4-6.
It's about time! What took you so long Capcom? You can't have capcom games on the virtual console without Mega Man.
Finally, I was beginning to think Mega Man wouldn't show up on the vc. Gotta love those old unforgiving games This and the next 3 are definite downloads. It's worth mentioning the music which is awesome in the first 4 games. Don't remember the music from 5 n 6.
Mega Man 2 and 3 are the best. The first one was alright, but MM2 is better in every way.
oh man... memories of the horrible boxarts
I really can't wait for this one... the NES Megaman games were some of my favourite games of all time!
4 was my favorite actually, because it was the one i played back in the day. But i love all the ones before it as well. The ones after 4 were ok...
you dont need to download this when it comes out, you can buy all ten megaman games in one for gamecube and play that on your system. Also, gutmans ability was picking up and throwing stones
I second the "its about time" comment. And the Gamecube collection wasn't released in Europe. I'd rather play Powered Up on the PSP though so I will be passing on this.
I own both Mega Man and X collection. However, I will be downloading all ten of those games on my Wii! Mega Man 1-7 and X 1 2 and 3! Oh how sweet it is!!!!
The X collection version of Mega Man X 3 wasn't the Super NES version and when I noticed that, boy was I pissed!! I just thought the useless anime cinemas and awful remixed soundtrack dissapointed me to no end!! Not everyone will feel the same way about it as I do, so remember I'm speaking for myself.
Overall, people shouldn't be suprised about Capcom re-releaseing Mega Man on the Virtual Console. Even though Europe and others will get Mega Man before North America does again, I highly doubt Capcom wouldn't cash cow off of the franchise once again. Mega Man is just one of many old game franchises that deserves multiple exposure.
Now having said all of that, for those who don't want to download any Mega Man games because they own both collections then so be it. that's on ya'll. I on the other hand look forward to this!!!!
i love you capcom. release 2 and 3 and ill be in heaven
MEGA MAN 2 - Second greatest NES game EVER!!!! (Behind Super Mario Bros. 3 Of Course!)
This is my favorite NES game and the best series ever! Playing Mega Man takes me back to my carefree days of childhood. It progressively got worse as the series continued and then started sucking once it went RPG - damn Capcom!!!
I would say to just pick up the Megaman collection they released for the game cube awhile back. You get the first 10 If I remember correctly and you can save some of those precious blocks for other goodies coming down the pipe. Played through the first 5 mega's awhile back and these games are all still a blast.
I never heard about a Mega Man Collection for the Cube in Europe...
So this is like the only way for PAL-games to experience it since the NES days?
This is a considered download for me when I get my next Wii Points.
I completely missed that game. My first Mega Man was on SNES.
Well the VC has a better classic feel to is than the aniversary editions do
Megaman (x) Collection were both canned for Europe
Woo-hoo!! about frickin' time! Loved this game back in the day and still love it now. I got this when it first came out and is prob a big reason why i love games to this day. Its hard as nails as good games should be, if only developers had the courage to make games this challenging today. ace game, cant wait for the sequels.
Good start to a great series, it's a pity that it's being milked now. Original Mega Man series will always be the best to me though. The first game's pretty good, but is pulled down a bit by not having a great soundtrack like the sequels and it being more annoying than hard in some spots. 2, 3 and 5 are the best if you ask me, bring them on.
I was never a real fan of megaman BUT I did like the very first game before all the many sequals
There were only too many Megaman sequels when the series went 32-bit. A ridiculous amount when the series went onto the GBA... I don't want to see anymore Battle Network games at all! Agh!
To Brian: It may be a LONG while before we get any Mega Man X games (especially X3) on VC, as I believe that they'll start out with the regular series first.
Anyway, although this was the first game in the series, this wasn't a bad game at all. Only the difficulty & the lack of passwords kill it. But both Mega Man 2 & 3 are everyone's most favorite original MM games of all time, as of mine.
My favourite game of all-time.........and once you know which weapons do what, the game becomes a stack easier (ok, the Rock Monster never gets easier - but does the pause trick still work on the VC?)
I never tried this game back in the days, but I did play the followups and they are great so I'm going to download this and hopefully it's just as good as the other ones =)
yahoooo!!!!!! i love this game!! look at the box art though. lol
This game stands the test of time really well in my opinion. Great level design, character design and music... not to forget the gameplay, which is almost flawless.
So they finally came huh, well this one isn't the best but its the beginning of something very very good ^^
Shame about the slowdown..
Not bad but I can't see what's so monumental about it...
Just completed it!
This is my first foray into the series, and I liked it a lot It's hard, but not impossibly hard, and thankfully there aren't too many cheap deaths (But there are one or two, right Fireman? ¬_¬).
Gets 5/5 from me, although admittedly only just (If it didn't, it'd be a very high 4/5 =])
the gameboy version was not as um... revolutionary. it was just about 2 times worse. yuck.
to me, mega man is definitely one of the (if not the) greatest game franchises of all time. As kids, we played mega man 2 and 3 unend... As i got older, I was able to find all of the nes and snes games (except this one) in pawn shops. They are all amazing in some way though the one that stands out the most (and not necessarily in a good way) is of course this one, the first of the series (as is often the case).
I finally got the opportunity to check this one out in the anniversary collection (though that collection is known for it's poor emulation of this game in particular). That said, I found this one by far the toughest of the series. It also had some of the best music of the series (but the tunes really only sounded good on the gameboy partial port of this game and mm2, Mega Man's revenge). As expected, the graphics were by far the worst of the whole mega man franchise but still comparable to games from that time (remember that this is one of the earlier nes games. There were a lot of awful looking 3rd party games in the very early days of the nes).
The level design is often an exercise in frustration. Some stages are super easy while others are near impossible. Still, this is the beginning of one of the most prolific series in video game history. If you don't have a playstation 2/3 or xbox/xbox 360 and don't have access to the mm anniversary collection or mmx collection, then you might contemplate getting this game (note that the controls for the mm anniversary collection were all messed up on the gamecube for some reason. the two buttons were swapped and playing these games with the gamecube controller kinda sucked). Still, I recommend you hold off until mega man 2 comes out (at the time it was released, mega man 2 was prob one of the (if not the) most fun titles to be released for the nes)
If you're new to the series, wait for mega man 2, 3, 5, 7, X or X3 before judging the series as a whole because those are probably some of the best titles it ever produced. If you like any of those games, then check this one out for sure. Just be wary of having this one be your first mega man game…
also, if you're looking for more information about all things mega man, check out this site (the holy grail of mega man sites):
http://www.mmhp.net/GameHints/GameList.html
Hmm... never really liked the original Megaman series all too much... still played through 2-4 though... The X series is awesome though. Got the X collection for the GC though, along with a freeloader which is supposed to work on the Wii too, I really hope it does. (Getting my Wii in a few days)
Can't understand people who are like Mr. Drayton up there and think that the game sucks because of the cinematics... I loved the game for the snes but I was only pleasantly surprised when I found that it was the PSX version that was included in the collection. If the freeloader really does work I'm getting one of those snes like controllers so I can play the games for real. Hated the GC button layout.
Megamans 2 and 6 were better.
MM 4 was my favorite (the charge shot is your friend) XD
oh, and I agree with Dayton about the MMX collection, but only about the remixed music, f*** how I hated the choppy remixed MMX 3 music >_
I'm glad there is the suspension save to help. I remember playing it on the nes and had to turn it off to start all over again. It's improved in theat way, in my opinion a fantastic game.
Even so I'm repeating what many others wrote before me, I never heard about any MM-collection in europe. Played the first SNES MegaMan though, it was fun, but back than Jump'n'Shoots just weren't my kind of game. But I think this little gem is perhaps the best way to start over with this genre. Hope I'm up to the callange, guess today's "easy" games made me all soft ^o^. Perhaps the worst part about the game really is the cover- reminds me of the old "Running Man" movie from about the same time, but ol' Arnold "Gouvernator" S. was looking MUCH better in his body-suit. Seriously Capcom- did you put an actor into that costume as a model? Can't stop looking, it's like a serious traffic accident... *shudder*
Quite ridiculous how usa doesn't have this game yet, this series was greatest!
What? This game still isn't out yet?! Nintendo and Capcom, what in the world are you guys waiting for?!
Man, this was a hard game! Great though.
Excellent game- fun to play and a fantastic soundtrack!
Also, the suspension points are really appreciated- no need to do
the whole game in one sitting which was sometimes painful.
I hope they deliver the rest of the series, and quickly.
You're better off saving your money for Mega Man 2 or 3 to be released. They both have more (and better designed) stages, bosses and power-ups.
I can't believe that this isn't out in the US yet! I liked this game the best and I'm not sure why more people don't feel the same. To each their own though, for sure. Glad to hear you can save it, since it's so damn hard at the end. This game had the best graphics for 1987.
I hope this game will come out soon to the VC before the end of this year... who knows might get it around december or around xmas time.
if only they would come out with Mega man X. that game was awesome
My best friend had that game (Mega Man X) and it looked cool before he died not so long ago.
Bought it yesterday evening and finished it today and I must say it was quite short. Only 10 levels in total and the boss weakness is a bit silly if you find the right weapon they die in 2-3 shots total. Takes a bit longer with the default weapon though. It was quite a fun game seeing as it focus on both platforming and action. Looking forward to playing more of the Mega Man games as they reach the VC.
The difficulty of the game is quite nice, it's always fun and it never feels impossible even if you die allot (I sure did) quite fun and still challenging. Annoying if you take some levels in wrong order though as they become much harder.
Do you think that the delay in NA is due to the mega man collection being released relatively recently?
Huh? Mega Man collection? You mean "Mega Man Anniversary Collection"? Mega Man had three anniversaries since that game was released. "Relatively recently" doesn't cut it.
I'm surprised Japan doesn't even have either Megaman games.
What a treasure of a game! This was back when companies cared about making games, not just churning out sequels. Er, wait. What am I saying?
I'd recommend getting Mega Man 2 before the first one. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, just a little rough around the edges. Plus, like in many other PAL games, the sound is slooowww, but don't let that bother you too much.
Cheating is pretty easy in this game and, much like in - say - ActRaiser, the score system is just obsolete. Why did so many developers have to stick score systems to every single game in the late 80's/early 90's? This isn't Pac-Man or Space Invaders! It's Mega Man, which means even if you've played platformers before, you're probably going to die. That means your score will reset.
Like I said, not a bad game, but I still recommend getting MM2 instead.
Dang those lucky europeans they get everything before us and the Japanese also are too lucky for there own good, because they get stuff before the rest of the world, but still the U.S. needs some new material, no offense to anyone though, but at least we got to keep Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels! Sorry everyone just really angry.
"Dang those lucky europeans they get everything before us"
... Bwahahahahaha!!! Oh, that's a classic!
Stupid American is stupid.
But yeah, the score system is completely pointless. It was just added because of the arcade mentality that every game need a high score meter, and means absolutely nothing in this game. Just repeat a level with a 1-up in it over and over and watch your high score soar into the stratosphere, while no one who is familiar with the game and it's score system will be impressed at all. Fun!
"Dang those lucky europeans they get everything"

Most, of the ppl here from US. aren't even noticing this isn't even out for US yet.
If anyone's got an insider, please tell when there's a release date for this lol.
oh yea I 4got all about Mega Man Anniversary Collection lol. I should try to hunt that down. So THAT'S why America isn't getting any Mega Man games for download...
That box art is hilarious!
As far as Mega Man goes, I'm as biased as they get. Mega Man 2 is my favorite game of all time.
I love this series. The original ranks #3 to me, and it is absolutely not to be missed. Everything clicks in these games, spot-on control for platforming and shooting, levels with a theme and corresponding boss--selectable at any time--you can't beat this stuff with a stick. I don't see the excessive sequels as rehash so much as just more Mega Man. What's better than one Mega Man? A jillion of 'em.
Yup, the box-art looks like a relic from some pagan ritual. What of it?
I got the Mega Man Collection 4 GCN and am playing through them in order. I am enjoying this game so far and I'll see if this influences me to get 9 after I beat the 8 here. That X Collection is also getting interesting too.
I own the Mega Man collection on the Xbox, but still Mega Man belongs on the VC. This game is a VC essential. Just think for 1000 points you could get Mega Man 1 and 2, both are awesome games. Just watch out for Gutsmans level! Its brutal
@ Drake
Wow you really did not like the orginal soundtrack to Mega Man. Sure its not as good as MM 2, but still its really good
Kick ass game. I am not going to get these since I own Mega Man anniversary on the gamecube. I am waiting for Mega Man 9 to come out! But if you release Mega Man X 1 through 3 maybe we will talk turkey
FINALLY IT'S COMING OUT TOMORROW!!
@Magic_Ocarina. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we didn't get megaman this week. But feel free to treat yourself to some Sonic SMS.
Are we EVER GONNA GET THIS GAME ON THE AMERICAN VC!?
I don't care, actually. I'm just gonna get the Anniversary collection.
It's out!!! It's out!!! It's out!!! Oh thank you glorious Capcom
Is it possible that the box art are something terrible?
It still makes me laugh to hear comments like "damn those lucky europeans". I don't know a single PAL gamer who wouldn't trade your later release dates for a full speed version of the game without big black borders and picture squashing.
Not to mention the fact that when these games originally came out we would have been the ones having to wait for our "superior" PAL conversions!
YESSS Finally USA got Megaman i dont kno how long i have
been waiting for this u Europeans are sneaky getting
urs way in advance:P
The game is Great, awesome level design which keeps popping out in other games, like jumping into a platform where there's a spike mine roaming, and challenging and by that I mean...dont expect a difficulty compare to the first Super Mario Bros. This game is hard, way hard! I have the collection and have played to the death all Megamans, I mean, vs Elecman, you must kill him before he kills you. Megaman 2 is...well...normal compare to this...this is no cake walk. Is like buying LostLevels but $1 cheaper. I recommend reading a guide to weakness and print it before you go off against Elecman, (maybe, you have to match his speed)Bombman and Fireman, dying to restart a whole level is not good for health, you will thank me later. I hope so.
I LOVE THE MEGA MAN GAMES. i dont think im going to buy this one though, i think im going to wait for megaman 2 till i make a megaman purchase! this is still a great game
About stinking time. Although I have he collection for another system, the Mega Man series is one of my favorites and for good reason. I totally agree with the 4-star rating, but when MM2 comes out, I'd be surprised to see anyone in their right mind give it less than 5 stars. Mega Man just rocks. If you like platformers and/or haven't played MM before, 500 points is pocket lint considering the coolnes of this game, so pick it up!
Yay! I finaly managed to finish this game (on Mega Man Collection for PS2). As a child I always had a problem with the Yellow Devil. But now, after I learned his pattern it was not such a big deal. After that the game was like a walk in a park. Even the last boss was a big push over.
This game is not as hard as most people seem to think it is. I've had it for less than a week, and I'm already up to Yellow Devil, and it just seems like it's going to take practice to get past him. Even if I never did, it would still be worth my 500 points. The game is just a complete joy. Seriously, it might not be as good as Mega Man 2, but I don't see any reason not to buy both.
The Yellow Devil isn't that hard. His blocks move in the same pattern very time, so all you have to do is learn how the low-flying blocks move, and you're good. The pattern is very simple, so he won't take too long.
With this game finally out in the US, it must mean that Mega Man 2 is coming soon. HOPEFULLY! =]
Good game but I do enjoy the remixed music from the MM AC
The robot masters were easy to beat. Now I'm stuck on the yellow devil. It takes forever to deplete his health!
Pikimin95 your almost right. Bomb Man, Guts Man, and Cut man were pretty easy, Ice Man was normal difficulty, and Fire Man was a little hard but still beaten him soon. However Elec Man stage is hard as ****! I'm not believing this! If the enemies, and the electric wire won't stop you then Elec Man will! How stupid of Capcom to put most of the difficulty on this Robot Master Stage! Even Fire Man and his stage was easier then this! (I haven't beaten Elec Man yet but maybe because I had since this Friday.)
Michinmuri your right. We should get the game. These are the reason why I got this game. 1.Mega mann is my favorite video game character.
2. To support Megaman 7 Virtual Console Release. (That is my most wanted Megaman game. Am I the first to complain about Megaman 7 not out yet on the VC?
3. I want a real challenge. I am tried of easy games.
4. I wanted it.
Thats about it.
That was why I thought Elecman was just about the coolest boss in the series--he looks awesome too. Use Cutman's weapon on him, he'll fall in three hits.
Thanks for the advice Cally! I'll try it out!
I'm kind of disapointed. I just finished the game like 10 minutes ago, and Dr. Wily (not the stage, the character) was REALLY easy. Its sad that people actually rate this as a difficult game. NOOBS! =]
umm im new to mega man and the seriese, just got 2000 points:)
can enyone tell me if its a good game to a new player ??
@supermetroid
This game is a classic, but Megaman 2 is a lot better, you should get that one, it's easier and perfect for new players. If you like it, then you can comeback for this one or get the brand new Megaman 9.
a classic !!!!!!
I will probably download this eventually knowing that I have 2600 wii points. This may be surprising, but I have never played a Mega Man game.
One of the first games that I played which you could use multiple powers. This was very awesome for it' s time. It felt like the game had something more than most of the other NES games. Not preferring to quality more to quantity. 4 stars
Damn unfair bussines going on in ice world. I rushed through it all before and didn't notice it, but the propellors off you just by landing on them. Crime glitch.
Look what at the top of the box art says:"State-of-the-Art High Resolution Graphics". You don't mess with the blue bomber.
I just downloaded it on Tuesday 11-11-08!! I am really enjoying it!So far I have defeated Cutman and that is about it. When I finish this, I definately see Mega Man 2 in my future. P.S. This is the first Mega Man game I have ever played.
Love it, but DAMN IT IS HARD!!!!!
The cover is awful, indeed. Nevertheless, this is a heck of a game! Not the best of the series (1-6), but still 5* for me. MEGAMAN RULES!!!
Btw, does anyone agree with me that this first release is harder than the following??? It took me more effort than expected! Maybe 'cause I didn't play it as a child... dunno.
The first Mega Man is harder than 2 and 3. The 2nd I found too easy and the third was tricky but still easier than the original.
Not as good as 2 and 3, but still crazy fun.
And I like how they had points in this one.
I say this is better than Mega Man 3.
I'm tempted to get this. I have the GC collection, but using the GC controller is awkward.
The best way to look at the boxart is to not look at it.
i love mega man 10 and i think i will download these because i cant find anthology collection
i think megaman is fun but i only have one problem..why cant i aim up?
i can run rings around this game i just completed it last night and scored 1.3M points at the end i could have carried on but ... i fell to my death in Gutsmans stage Lol.
