I'm actually looking forward to this game more than Star Fox Zero. I don't know what it is, but I really like the idea of a group of friends staring at the TV and screaming instructions to one another. Seems fun.

@AlliMeadow:
Hahaha, that's exactly what my friend said too. Nice to get two different Star Fox titles at the same time. I wonder which one gets in my Wii U first.

It would be great if David Wise made soundtracks to all future Nintendo games.

I was just about to preorder an eshop key for Starfox Zero when I saw that there was also a key for Starfox Guard. So I went to the official website and found this info:

official website wrote:

Star Fox Guard is included in the retail version of Star Fox Zero. A standalone digital version of the game can also be purchased through the Nintendo eShop for $14.99. Customers that purchase the digital version of either Star Fox Zero or Star Fox Guard will receive an automatic $4.99 Nintendo eShop discount toward the purchase of the other game.

So now I'm asking myself: Why are digital buyers punished like that? I'd like to have both games, but without paying extra. And no, I don't want them on a disc, I want the digital version.

If I'd buy the retail version, I would get Starfox Zero and Guard for 45€, but only as two discs.
If I'd buy the digital version like I usually do, I'd have to pay 55€ to get both.

I don't get it...

I don't get it...

Star Fox Zero physical (cones with Star Fox Guard) price = $60
Star Fox Zero digital price = $50
Star Fox Guard price = $15
Buy Star Fox Zero and get $5 off Star Fox Guard (or the other way around) total price paid for both = $60

Oh, I didn't know that. Then the text on the official website is pretty mistakable, because it only says 'Star Fox Guard is included in the retail version of Star Fox Zero', no mention of the First Print edition. What's worse, Amazon doesn't even have the First Print Edition (at least there's no price for it), but only the standard edition for 45€ or 'Starfox Zero Guard' for 70€.

@DefHalan: So far I never had to pay 60€ for Nintendo's Wii U releases (except for MK8, which came with the first MK for free, so it cost effectively 55€), so the only games I would happily pay that amount for are Zelda U and Splatoon 2 (whenever that might be). NSMBU, Pikmin 3 and Sonic Lost World all cost me only 20€ thanks to the free keys that came with MK8, I bought Splatoon, Yoshi's WW and Mariomaker for 37€, XCX cost 50€ and I bought Smash for 40€ with the Amiibo as a one-time-thing on a disc to stay in the Wii U's tray forever. And I did it only because I would've have to pay 60€ for the digital version.
So if I buy a Starfox Zero key for 45€ and then get a 5€ discount on Guard, I would end up paying 55€.
In that case I think I'll just pass, don't even know if Guard is something that I like or not.
Honestly, I don't understand why the put it under the Starfox brand if you still have to buy it separately. Then they could've just stayed with naming it Project Guard...

Thanks for clearing that up guys! I'll preorder my Starfox Zero key now.

@shani: Well $60 is the normal price of games for me. Technically I even save more money by buying digital since I don't have to pay sales tax on it lol.

@DefHalan: As a PC player (who always had Nintendo consoles and played Big N games way before PC games), I'm just not used to the oppressive price policy on consoles anymore and I can't just accept it now.
Steam and keyshops have revolutionised the PC gaming market and the same thing should happen (it already has begun) for the console market in my opinion.
The only games I'm ready to pay 60€ for are sure hits like GTA or Legend of Zelda (but not for remakes, of course), because Rockstar and Nintendo not only have proven that they always deliver, but those two game series in particular always offer more than other games (bigger worlds, better stories, more content in general).

But I'm not ready to pay 60€ for more lightweight games, even if those games are really exceptional (Mario series for example). And again, there's one exception: Splatoon 2. Because I put so many hours into Splatoon, I had so much fun with it (and still have), I'm really addicted to it, I love this game and it's my absolute favourite. But it's still in the lightweight category, because it's not a huge storydriven openworld game like GTA, Zelda or Xenoblade.

Other than that, I usually pay no more than 30-37€ for new AAA PC games (like FC4 for example or PES in the past) and even a lot less if they're not new (20-30) or from smaller developers (10-20).

I honestly don't understand how most console gamers just accept being ripped-off and don't do anything against it. 60€ are a lot of money and no one should pay that price just because they are forced to do so by the industry.
If the price is too much to ask (not only applying on games), I usually just wait until the price reaches a region that fits my appreciation of the game (unless the game is so great that 50-60€ really correlate with my appreciation of it). The only time I paid 50€ right-away for a game I had no previous experience with was the Crew. And I only did it on the spot because it guaranteed me beta access and because the game seemed to be all that I always wanted. And it is.

@shani: Well, Consoles will not get Steam prices until they embrace full digital. PC still get physical releases but they are only rarely tied to Steam for DRM. Steam is its own market and is able to control prices for its entire market. Consoles still have a large physical presence and that is a market they do not have as much control over. They might mark their games at $60 but a store can sell them for however much they want. This causes issues between digital, which is controlled by the Console maker, and physical, which the console maker has very little control. I use my PC as a secondary (or tertiary if you count Wii U and 3DS separately) and never pay full price. But I am willing to pay full price for the console experience, for the games I want. Steam and lots of digital PC games markets offer great discounts but at the cost of not having a physical market to keep aligned with.

@DefHalan: Exactly, and I think this has to change. Physical releases are just an unnecessary relic from the previous century, just like gas-fueled cars.
You never hear PC users complain about the dominance of the digital market (and physical releases still exist as an alternative, as you pointed out), because going digital is just so much better and comfortable in so many ways.
Since Nintendo opened the eshop, I can buy keys from 3 retailers, but I usually only buy them at one of them (mmoga) and the discount is usually no higher than 5€.
If there was more competition, the prices would actually drop and you would get the games cheaper like in the PC market. I can't wait until the same thing happens for the console market.

One remark though:

DefHalan wrote:

Not really. Steam is only a mere part of the PC gaming market, which not only consists of Steam, Uplay, Origin, GOG and Humblebundle, but also all the retailers who sell keys for all those platforms.
Steam has no control over the prices those digital retailers offer and that's the reason why you can get games cheaply. If you only had Steam and the other publisher's platforms, you could still buy cheaper by waiting for sales but with digital retailers like kinguin etc you always pay a lower price than Steam etc are asking.
That's the thing I'm demanding for the console market. Not only more dominant digital shops, but also further opening this market to digital retailers. Because for the eshop, they exist already, but not in large quantities that would force them to compete with each other more aggressively.

Those two parts are from different areas of my reply. What I meant is how Steam has full control over Steam Products. Steam's market is what Steam has control over. While console makers have their digital and physical markets. Console Makers have full control over their digital markets, while a limited control over their physical. They need the markets to appear united for advertising and clear messaging to consumers. Sorry if it was confusing. Sometimes my brain moves faster than I can type or speak and my ideas don't fully make it out in a understandable way lol.

@DefHalan: Digital only isn't going to change anything. In fact, it is only going to make it worse. If there's no competition anymore, they will have a monopoly on the distribution of software on their system. Physical retail copies at least provide some form of competition. Games are cheap on Steam because there are other distribution platforms on PC and piracy is also a big thing still.

@shani: First Print Edition is most likely sold out on Amazon then. It's sold out in other places, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Octane

shani

@Octane: Exactly my point, it has to be digital + competition. Steam isn't always cheap (unless there is a sale), but key retailers are.

I don't know how big piracy still is, from my perspective it's decreasing, but I don't have any absolute numbers. But I think the fact that games got a lot cheaper through digital platforms is a key factor in diminishing piracy.
And I think piracy gets too emphasized as a negative argument because I'm pretty sure, similar to other media like music, movies and shows, offering the content for a reasonable price (= Netflix, amazon etc) leads to less piracy. For those three kind of media, it is already proven that piracy actually has a positive effect on sales, so I assume it's similar with games.

@Octane: One could argue that the competition comes from the other platforms. Steam has competition but still has the majority of the PC market. I think they have about 80-90% of the PC games market.

@DefHalan: Wow, those numbers are truly worse than I thought. But one has to ask: How many of those who pirated it, did actually continue to play it? I only assume, not know, that many of those pirated copies were only used as a sort of 'demo' to see it the game is worth the buy. Then they either bought it or just stopped playing. But again, I could be wrong, I don't know to how many people that actually applies.
On the other hand, this is not a famous game that everyone wants to play, I hadn't even heard of it until now and I surely don't want to play it. So it would be more interesting to see the stats for a big game like GTA for example.

And yes, we should probably create a new thread for this.

I wonder what other types of Games you could make using this type of mechanic. I would love to make a Ghost Hunting type game. You go into a house, place cameras and watch them on the TV, then on the gamepad you have your character try to run through the house and catch the ghost or something. Could be really awesome lol.

Skip to 3:10 for Star Fox Guard footage. There are more enemies than I expected; there's even one that hijacks a camera and broadcasts a fake feed. Looks good so far;

@DefHalan: Well, there's a ghost robot that looks like a Boo from the Mario games, so you can definitely make some sort of ghost house I guess!

It's not bad so far, the bot that when destroyed will release smoke to cover new bots coming at you is a great idea and I like the fat frog bot collecting gold at the end.
