It wouldn't be surprising, or disrespectful to run a sale. I don't expect them to, but it wouldn't be unthinkable or in any way wrong. They just would market it as a celebration of Iwata-sama's life and discount games he had a special hand in during his career on the eShop like Earthbound or Kirby Super Star.
That's the kind of thing companies do a lot and, done correctly, would be very respectful of his life and legacy.
Honestly, it would be one of the most distasteful ways to "celebrate" the passing of somebody.
There's many ways to celebrate the memory of someone - but "marketing his stuff" is certainly the worst.
Furthermore, Nintendo has been very discreet and respectful about this issue. What would you want them to do?
Put a big banner on the eShop with Iwata's face in the clouds with the disclaimer "To celebrate the premature death of out President, we're offering all his games with a 40% off!! Grab them while they're hot!!".
do companies really do this creepy stuff a lot or you just made that up?!
Because if someone did that to me after I'm dead, I would come back and haunt them.
They do it every year with the Black Friday "crush the guy infront of you" Sale!
ehe I feel like sh!t€ making fun of this but it's amazing how many people believe that all events of life, no matter how tragic, should simply lead to them having more videogames.
relevant person tragically passes away prematurely → videogame sale ad memoriam
earthquake disaster → videogame sale for charity
kids in Africa dying from AIDS → let's buy me some more videogames, that'll cheer them up
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

@spizzamarozzi: Yeah, 40 percent off would be disrespectful. I'm talking about selling all eShop games Iwata personally worked on (and maybe releasing one or two more) and for a week or two weeks or a month or whatever selling them for, say, $0.50 or $1.00 each. It could be a link at the top of the eShop that says "Remembering the life, legacy, and games of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata 1959-2015. All proceeds from the sale will be given to Mr. Iwata's family as we all celebrate his enormous accomplishments in the industry he loved." They have to make it clear that the purpose of the sale is not to make Nintendo more money, but to put things Iwata-sama loved in more people's hands as a way of thanking and honoring his work.
That's common. And that's respectful. It's the kind of thing I, and I'm sure Iwata-sama, would want. People celebrating my life and enjoying the things I created with it, rather than mourning my death and refraining from the things I loved. It's what I hope for myself, anyway. I guess that may not sound as nice to some, but that doesn't necessarily make it in poor taste.
And I'm not saying I feel like it's what they should do, just something that wouldn't be rude or entirely out of character.
@spizzamarozzi: That kind of thing happens all too often. I remember when Robin Williams died there was this whole surge of merchandising and sales of his old movies. I doubt Zelda thought very highly of that, trying to capitalize off of her grief. That's the kind of world we live in, unfortunately.
I guess if we had to do something, I'd say we make posts on Miiverse that would be collaborated to make a mosaic that looked like Iwata when pieced together, and to distinguish us adopters of the Wii U and 3DS we'd have something on our profiles to immortalize us as a part of his legacy as well...
... -Sigh- That just might be my dumbest idea yet. :/ Forget I suggested anything.
"You say you want a revolution? Well, Wii got one."

Well, Black Friday's just there to stimulate consumerism, I think. Keeps people from being too stingy. Having a sale to celebrate someone's death is a different story. I don't particularly like it when people treat the funerals of their family members like a media spectacle, but it happens.
"You say you want a revolution? Well, Wii got one."
@arronishere: Since Black Friday comes the day after Thanksgiving, it's not technically being "hijacked". The way you address the matter makes me wonder why you'd even critique in the first place. You don't live here, so it's no surprise it's foreign to you, but you should probably save your judgements on matters that actually pertain to you. Thanksgiving and the consumerism binge that follows does not.
"You say you want a revolution? Well, Wii got one."
So basically, the eShop continued on as usual. No surprise considering most of those releases were probably ready to go beforehand, and even the loss of their company president doesn't change the fact that they're a company that has to make money, as are the ones releasing games and sales on their platforms. No fancy sales, no extra comemoratory game. They stuck to their guns, and honestly, I'm sure that's more respectful to Iwata's wishes as the president of a company than what a lot of you guys were suggesting...
