@ricklongo: That's awesome! Still, I'm hesitant about giving my money to them if there are going to be big glitches like the ones mentioned by ogo79 and yourself. Please keep me in the loop if the problems have been resolved!

So... has anybody beaten the fourth castle yet?

Here's a problem I'm running into. Whenever I try to save after acquiring the dungeon item (master scroll), the game crashes. Happenned twice when I saved right after getting it, and then again after I got it, went to the boss, beat it, came back to the library, THEN tried to save it. Has anyone else ran into this problem?

It's a damn shame, because it makes the game pretty much unplayable after this point - and so close to the end, too.

@Hey-Cha-La Yeah, I'd certainly suggest that you wait it out. When those bugs are finally fixed, by all means get it, because it's genuinely close to a 10/10 for me. I just can't understand why they decided to launch such an excellent game in such a sorry state.

@ricklongo: Thanks for the mini-review! Perhaps this is why Nintendo Life has been taking its sweet time with the review, in order to give the company a shot to fix the game with a patch. The patch won't be a 100% guarantee either. The Binding of Isaac got a patch and will still have game breaking freezes.

Also, it happens with games released by big name companies as well. I have Sonic All Star Racing Transformed and every so often we pull it out to play and yup, still it ALWAYS freezes eventually.

@ogo79: Storybird have done the right thing and patched the game as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Nintendo usually takes several weeks to review a game patch and send it out to users. I don't know if this is because it has to go through the QA process again, possibly (the QA process seems pretty laughable to have let these bugs through testing, at any rate).

I have experience of this waiting for the Elliot Quest patch to arrive. PEW (the developer) issued the patch to Nintendo who took around 3 whole weeks to review and send out the patch in Europe (less time in the States)

The patch should auto-download. I'm also keeping an eye on Twitter and Miiverse because the small amount of this game that I played through really sucked me in and I'm eager to play more. If I find anything out, I'll post it here.

This game absolutely ticks all the right boxes for me in terms of what I want from a game and it should have been delayed in Europe when the US version arrived with bugs. Poor show, Nintendo.

Nothing yet... Does anyone have a relevant email address that we can contact Nintendo using? They've released a game on their eShop that's basically unplayable. The developer has issued a patch and Nintendo are delaying getting it released.

@shinynewbicycles: I'm honestly not sure why you're cutting the developer so much slack. Nintendo is to blame for allowing the bugs through their certification process, but the main fault lies absolutely with the developers, who submitted the game in such a buggy state in the first place.

They say they submitted a patch, but this will obviously take a while, as Nintendo has to make sure things are okay. Instead, they should have known better and taken care of these things in their original submission.

@ricklongo: Don't get me wrong, the developer is absolutely at fault for there being a bug in the first place. The reason I'm frustrated with Nintendo is because they always seem to slow the process of getting patches down. A lot. NOE typically releases the same patch that goes out from NOA a week later as well, which adds to my frustration. But yeah, the dev is to ultimately blame for releasing something this buggy (same with last week's Olympia Rising debacle).

I find it bizarre that this particular game came out in the US with bugs and the dev/Nintendo/whoever didn't delay its European release. Feels disrespectful to the customer, which is putting a downer on a game I've been looking forward to playing for a very long time.

Edit: Another thing - it's pretty shameful the dev hasn't posted ANYTHING in response to bug reports and questions about the patch on Miiverse. At least Playeveryware responded to my tweets and Miiverse posts regarding bugs in Olympia Rising...

I continue to follow this thread with great interest! I hope the game gets patched soon.

LadyCharlie

oof. thanks for the feedback, all.
I was really interested in this game on release, but reading about how it's got more bugs than a Motel 6 bed really talked me into saving $15.

I just spotted this game and it looks fantastic but reviews are ok and general player feedback seems to be complaints about bugs, when/if a patch comes I'll be giving this a try.

@ogo79: You'll be doing yourself a disfavor by sticking only to the Castlevania series. Guacamelee, Teslagrad, Elliot Quest, and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse are four excellent (and bug-free) metroidvanias available on Wii U, for example.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse was indeed super-polished.
Guacamelee was close but there were some glitches and softlocks, for instance in 2P co-op when one player dies in the moment you're defeating a boss (double kill) then you're stuck in the room forever and the path never opens.
Teslagrad had only very few minor issues and as far as I know they were all fixed soon after release, however, with just 4 upgrades/power-ups it doesn't feel very Metroidvanish.

Elliot Quest was a mess though, unfortunately. They updated it a couple of times and it runs much better now, but I'm not sure it's bug-free now. It had a gamebreaking bug and was unbeatable at one point. I had to stop playing as there was no way to make progress. Time passed and by the time it was finally updated, I was already distracted by other games (games without bugs ) and never found a way back in, because frankly, this game's world is pretty complex. Elliot Quest is the reason I didn't buy Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus and Olympia Rising at launch. And those games have the exact same bugs, almost, so I'm doing the right thing: I wait for the fixes. I don't want bugs that keep me from enjoying awesome games.

All these games are pretty nice nonetheless, Shantae and Guacameele received a 9/10 in my book, but the best Metroidvania, (apart from the Metroid, Castlevania, and Wonder Boy classics), is La-Mulana on WiiWare.

@SKTTR: @ricklongo: I would also very heartily recommend Elliot Quest to anyone looking for a Metroidvania/Zelda 2 style game. Very very good game.

Elliot Quest feels like a Kid Icarus game to me, with all the primary bow&arrow shooting. I hope I can jump back into it and find out where to go, after all this time, and don't run into any new bugs. It's on the top of my backlog for quite some time now, followed by Plague of Shadows.

@Neko_Ichigofan: I haven't received the patch yet. But then, I'm in Europe (UK), so it usually takes a week or so more for us to receive the exact same patch, for some reason. Anyone else in Europe got it yet?
