Topic: Call to eShop devs: Update and re-release old WiiWare games please!

Since I know a lot of devs frequent this site, I thought this would be a good place to post this. Recently I learned that Brian Provinciano didn't think it would be worthwhile to do a Wii U version of Retro City Rampage since it was already available on the Wii U through the Wii Channel. I have to say that this is a very shortsighted judgment! I hope that the recent announcement by Jools Watsham that more people had downloaded Mutant Mudds on Wii U eShop than other platforms combined turned some heads. And I'm glad to hear that Shin'en is doing this with Art of Balance, which I've yet to experience.

There are so many incentives to buying on the Wii U eShop — more customers, incentives to purchase such as the Deluxe Download Promotion, the ability to put games on sale and the much better visibility that comes with being in the eShop — the possibility of appearing on the front page, for example, or as part of a bigger promotion. And, while Wii owners still can get this through the WiiWare shop and this game's original release on the Wii Shop was a wonderful love letter and thank you to the fans at the time, I doubt there are many Wii owners left who want this and haven't gotten it. On the other hand, there are only disincentives for Wii U owners to purchase WiiWare. Using the Wii Channel feels a bit like stepping into the past, which is great for playing Wii favorites but not so great for discovering new experiences. But most damaging of all, purchasing requires doing so through Wii Shop Points, which, as we all remember, can only be purchased in specific quantities. Now that I look at it, RCR sells for 1000 Wii Points, or $10, so perhaps it's not a big problem with that specific game — but others don't fit the pricing structure quite so nicely. Further, a $10 WiiWare game looks less and less appealing as time goes on, for sure...

There is a way for the Wii U eShop to recognize that a game has been downloaded on Wii — Virtual Console discounts for previously purchased games are proof of this. So, my plea to WiiWare-cum-eShop developers: rerelease your WiiWare games as eShop games. As is, or with upgrades a la the Two Tribes classics trilogy. Offer a discount to those who previously purchased on WiiWare. Then continue to support your great WiiWare games as eShop titles with sales, discounts, promotions, and, if applicable, bug fixes and — dare I suggest it? — DLC.

I can't be the only one who was turned off by the Wii Shop to the point that I never felt inclined to purchase much WiiWare. I did buy RCR (on PSN, unfortunately), as well as Cave Story, and I'd buy them again in a heartbeat if they were offered at a discount on eShop with possible upgrades. But there were a lot more that I never touched, like World of Goo, La-Mulana, MotoHeroz, And Yet It Moves, the BIT.TRIP series. I say this to show why I personally would want this to happen. But I don't want these devs to rerelease their old games just for me and people like me, who could be argued are saying they just "can't be bothered" to go back in time to the Wii Shop. There are plenty of others who probably wouldn't want to go browsing for WiiWare either since it's a bit cumbersome, but I don't want the devs to re-release these games just for such people. I want them to do so because it seems that it would be just a smart, profitable move for them! Doing so would open up the doors for many more customers who either don't want to go to the Wii Shop or just haven't bothered to discover it existed — which was the original problem with WiiWare sales anyway. Now that the great eShop has moved in next door to the shoddy Wii Shop, which so many criticized in its lifespan, doesn't it make sense for companies to develop products for the more attractive eShop?

I hope to see the day when HD versions of Cave Story, World of Goo, Retro City Rampage and La-Mulana can sit alongside my Wii U eShop titles. Devs — please make it happen!

I think we all agree that WiiWare titles on the eShop would make the console much more attractive, even if they get ported as they are, without HD or whatever. The eShop is a great platform and I'm sure a lot of people have missed on some WiiWare classics - the fact that there is the chance of cyclical sales and discounts (much like the 3DS eShop, where DSiWare co-exist with 3DS downloadables) makes this a no brainer - it has to be done.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

Totally agreed Zach. RCR is the only WiiWare game I fire up the Wii Channel to play, but it would definitely get more airtime if I could launch it directly from the main Wii U menu.

Unlike RCR, there's a lot of games that would have benefitted from patching or a larger file size and better visuals. I'd happily throw down again for a quality WiiWare game like Tomenasanner - I can play it on my iPhone, but it's a more satisfying experience on the big screen with a Wii remote. Nintendo should definitely bring us the Art Style series as well and I too would like to have Cave Story on Wii U. There was a lot of dross, but some real gems too!

Mega Man 9 and 10 and the ReBirth games for sure.

Actually, I've been wondering why Capcom hasn't brought Mega Man 9 and 10 to the 3DS. It seems like an obvious move.

I would buy World of Goo again in a heartbeat for Wii U even though I already own it on Wii and Android.

I would drop some cash on the Wii U eShop for some of the old WiiWare games if they were available like I was @ogo79 at a Sega Genesis inspired doll show! As it is right now I really don't want to bother with the Wii Shop and Wii points and Wii Mode.

To blessed to be stressed.

Why would you want to transfer over mega man 10? That game should be transfered over to the digital trash can.

oooooooooo!

I agree, actually. Mega Man 10 ain't that good. But I would like to have all 10 classic Mega Man games on the same system.

Actually, he said that the Wii U version outsold Steam, Vita, and PS3 versions. He said 3DS still had, by far, the most sales of any platform.

My point? Put everything on the 3DS, developers, so we can have your game on the go!

There are still so many WiiWare games I never managed to get. I'd love to see them come to the Wii U eshop in HD (and sometimes with a lower price). In particular, I'd love the Strongbad and Monkey Island games (all vastly overpriced on WiiWare compared to other versions), as well as games like And Yet it Moves, Nyxquest, Dive, and Lostwinds.

@ogo79 They could just release on the eShop and not as a VC title.

I'd also love to see a lot of WiiWare games either get discounts or some extras that give them a real chance this time around. Being able to download them for a discounted price would be nice.
The Wii Shop itself wasn't too great, i agree. And i really can't blame people who never used it or didn't even go online with their Wii.
It should be different with the Wii U now, so yes, i'd really like to see that.

Not unless they either add Saturn support (I wish) or Capcom makes an e-shop version, but I'm not too fussed on it. Mega Man 8 is one of my least favorite classic games.
