I'm trying to set player 1 as my gamepad and player 2 as my Wiimote+classic controller. Can't figure it out...do I need two Wiimotes?? That just seems wrong

Not sure if the Wii U supports it, but the original did allow you play a 2-player game sharing one controller.

From what I can tell the GamePad is always player 1 and the other controllers are players 1, 2, 3 & 4. You can re-order the other controllers by pressing the Home button but you have to always have one non-gamepad controller connected as P1. No way to change this from what I can see.

source: I was curious and just tested it out myself. Couldn't have the Pro Controller as P2 without connecting a third controller. Ridiculous. Hopefully there's a solution to this I'm not aware of... and hopefully they work it out before the TurboGrafx appears with it's five player multiplayer....

Yeah I messed around with it too and you need to have 2 Wiimotes/Pro Controllers connected alongside the GamePad to play a 2 player game, with you being able to switch the order of the extra controllers. Seems very silly to me, how will 4 player N64 games even work?

I figured it out when I tried playing Balloon Fight with two players few months ago. Touch the touch screen to bring up the menu and touch the bar with P1 and some lights indicating that you're player 1 (top right corner). There you can change which player you want to play as. You can also check who is who if you look at the bottom right corner. For some reason GamePad is considered as player one and since WiiMote registers itself as player one too, it normally shows that you both are player 1. It wasn't funny when I first started Balloon Fight and we noticed that both are playing as one guy.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure there is no way to connect first WiiMote as player two so there are two choices: Use WiiMote as player 1 and GamePad as player 2 or connect two WiiMotes so you can use GamePad as player 1 and second Mote as player 2.

Awesome! That's fantastic! That solves the problem.
