When you really consider it, the Wii's only been around for almost four years. Provided they're still selling Wii's in 2017, we'll probably have many more classics by then.

It's JUST barely 3 years ago (as of 3 days ago) and I expect the next console to come out when the Wii is 5 years old, at the very soonest (probably later, what with Nintendo having sold so many consoles). Even then I doubt Nintendo will discontinue the Wii the very year it is released. In short that should be a good 7-10 years, just as an estimation. In three years we've gotten give or take 330 games in America, 320 in Europe, and 520 in Japan. When all is said and done, I would expect around a thousand for Europe and America and maybe 1500 for Japan, who knows. I believe the Virtual Console was made knowing they could only release so many games and 1000 is actually a lot, even split between so 10/11 systems. An average of 100 games per system minimum, that's impressive considering dead companies, licensing issues, and all those factors. Besides, some people already have what they want on the Virtual Console so hopefully everyone will be fully pleased eventually.
As long as the Wii VC games are compatible with the next generation system I'll be happy. If they make me rebuy all those VC games ... or rather they THINK I'd rebuy all the VC games I've already purchased ... I'll dump Nintendo like a hot potato.

@zzz_shadow: I will only be completely pleased if Earthbound and Mega Man VII gets released.
Let's look at this. If two game weeks continue the last December Monday, we'll have 342 games in North America. Then 2010 are all one-game weeks. That means we'll have 394 games by the last December Monday of 2010. If the Wii continue as the only home Nintendo console until 2011, it adds up to 446. If it's until 2012, it willl go to 498. And that's only if it's one-game week throughout the 2011 and 2012 and ends there. So, we should expect at least 498 games on the Virtual Console, but certantly not in the thousand range.
My theory is that though things are slow right now, they'll eventually speed up. You're likely right, but I tried not to think of it with too many numbers (which kinda failed, I used a lot). O.o Like, if we got an average of two games per week (yes, some weeks will only have one or none, but some may have three or more), that's 102 per year and basically 100 multiplied by however many years. If Wii lives for 10 years (2015/2016-ish) , that would be 1000. The current average (not the current RATE of course) is actually above 300 so all seems well to me. At bear minimum, I would expect 600-700 games in total
@zss_shadow: That is an good theory, however, Nintendo is probably trying to conserve those games until the next generation, so a mostly one-game weeks streak until the end of the console lifespan sounds very likely. The only way Nintendo will break the streak next generation is if they start clean next generation. They won't have to port all the games, they'll just add the launch titles for the Wii in, plus add in TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo, Sega Master System, Commondore 64, Sega Saturn, and Virtual Console Arcade support. They'll add a few titles as launch titles. They'll also go back to previous launch titles and add more launch titles. We'll see a lot more games then the 1st generation launch, but not all will be made available initally. They will come, but we will have to wait.
The VC features systems from the past, meaning that it can stay for untill the end of time (as long as there is a classic controller to play with.) It will carry on for many of Nintendo's systems. They can even add Gamecube in the future if they keep it with their new system.

Well I think that they did the block temporarily. I mean think of it they could be releasing first party games. Smash Bros. comes out in December you know.

That to me is going to be one of the selling points, and a far more robust online system.
