Hey guys, i got an interesting topic today (required a lot of reading so you have been warn). Ok for start this my "theory" of one of the secret project that Nintendo is working on and will be unveiled at E3 2010. As you know last Year at E3 2009 Sony and Microsoft introduced there version of the Wiimote, Natal and Wand (Both name not final i think). And so far analysist thinks Nintendo is about to released a new Console either in 2010 or 2011, some even say Microsoft will do the same thing. But Microsoft said Project Natal (add on) replaced the idea of a new console till maybe 2015, so it's clear that Microsoft follows the same road as Sony. But what about Nintendo? Well after reading this:
I now know or think of what Nintendo is planning. For start we all know that Nintendo isn't HD, but rather then releasing a new system to compete with existing HD rivals aka the PS3 and Xbox 360. I think Nintendo is planning on releasing the first redesign Wii Console and an Add-on version for existing Wii owners. In other words Nintendo had this in mind from the start since 2005 (When all three Consoles was first shown Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360). I believe this what they had in mind: (a side by side comparison plan sort of speak)
PS3= HD Console introduced in 2006 + add on Motion Control in 2010 (also a redesign PS3 in 2009) Xbox 360= HD console in 2005 + add on Motion Control in 2010. Wii= Motion Control Console in 2006 + add on / Redesign HD version of the Wii Console 2010.
Back in 2006 When Wii was released PS3 was expensive, Wii wasn't. Plus HDTV didn't get mas appealing right away. Nintendo knew this from the start even ask about it sometime in 2007 threw Everybody vote's channel "if you own a HDTV at home?"
The results said 48.8% yes and 51.2% at the time where there was i believe 7 million Wii sold. So in theory Nintendo waited for the right oppertunity when Sony finally made a PS3 Redesign and when most consumers did own an HDTV, plus an opportunity to upgrade their Optical Disc aka Wii Disc. What i mean by that is that just like Blu-Ray is getting a media Upgrade aka more memory:
And because Panasonic helped Nintendo create their media Disc and the fact Panasonic is also one of the 9 Electronic Company who made Blu-Ray and the fact Nintendo is been updating their DS card this theory is most likely facts.
Let me go off topic a bit. As of now DS shares to same fate as Wii as in there will be no new handheld for now when Sony do announce a successor to the PSP not a redesign like the rumor PSP-4000, then we might see a Nintendo announce theirs, as for DS media even do Sony PSP uses UMD until PSP Go arrived it had a limit of 0.9 Gig Single layer while a 1.8 Gig Dual Layer memory, even do Disc can hold more memory then card with the DS that's not the case since till now their has been DS card at 2 GIG meaning Ds beats PSP in terms of memory. (PSP UMD info:)
So far i seen 32 GIG SD card as the biggest memory of this media, so in theory if DS card is based on this Technology DS game can be 32 Gig big but read the link closely and you will see that 4 Gig and above does not work on older system meaning that developers won't risk it and i doubt that any gaming Company would use so many memory unless they made an MMO on DS which is highly unlikely.
Ok back to the topic, let's now pretend this theory is real so Nintendo decided a Wii HD console/ Add on (for existing Wii owners) as their prime supporter to extend the life cycle till at least 2015. What's the benefit? Well just like their Game Boy color upgrade from the Game Boy, as in Game Boy Color only games, Enchanted Game Boy games (with exclusive feature on Game Boy Color but able to play on Game Boy and Game Boy pocket with those exclusive features). This idea was used again in the DS Generation aka DS and Dsi systems. Nintendo can released both enchanted Wii games and Wii HD only games like for example: the add on/ Wii HD console will come with a Wii series title um Wii Sports HD or Wii Party (Mario Party version of the Wii series) this Wii HD only game since High resolution TV as a defrint progressive scan compare to normal 480 p TV's while future games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 is Wii enchanted game meaning on normal Wii's it has a 480p frame rate while on Wii HD it's on 1080p as exclusive feature and a exclusive planet within the game. But besides that both add on and redesign HD hardware will have full backwards compatible to Gamecube and Wii games as well as a (hopefully) a build in Hard-Drive 120 GIG, while all the standard feature of Wii plus exclusive new ones like Downloading Movies from a new Updated Wii Shop Channel/section (if Netflix succeed on Wii this can become a reality in the future). And at the same time finally get Multiplatform HD game ported to Wii HD like Bioshock, Orange Box, Street Fighter IV, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Virtua Fighter 5, Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Final Fantasy XIII just to name a few. If all of this can become a reality without question Wii will not only Win this Generation but also Destroys their Copycat Competition and at the same time the whole Wii bashing disappear. As for Pricing $299.99/€299.99 Wii HD released Nov 2010 in Japan while early 2011 for US/ EU at the same time Wii HD add-on for existing Wii owners both with a 120 GIG hard drive so we can extent the Wii life cycle to 10 Years.
What did you think about my theory? Let me know in the comments below.
Hmm, makes sense I guess. I hope they don't come out with another console for a long time, as I just got over the fact that I've spent so much on my Wii/remotes/games/accessories.
nintendo has said repeatedly they have no interest in an HD upgrade to the current wii. they deny a lot of things these days, but they usually keep their denials vague enough that they can get away with going back on them later; the HD upgrade denial was pretty specific and i doubt they were lying.
even with HD output, the wii will still be significantly less powerful than it's competitors. what's the point? i doubt it's possible for an external add-on to alter the capabilities of the wii's internal hardware, so HD wii means buying a new system. are the 55 million people who own a wii going to spend a few hundred all over again for the same thing in HD, or is it going to attract the PS3 and 360 fans who scoff at the notion of buying a wii now? the casual crowd has proven that they don't care about graphics, and the hardcores who do care won't touch the wii no matter what upgrades it gets.
they could coax some people into buying another wii by adding additional improvements like more powerful hardware and dvd playback along with HD, but at that point it's not the same system and i doubt that sony and microsoft's "the same thing but better" strategy is the direction nintendo wants to go for their next system. their plan for this year is to keep the wii afloat with strong software alone; next year, when all the 1st party titles have been exhausted and it's up to 3rd party titles to sustain the wii, it'll be the beginning of the end. that's the time to introduce an all new nintendo that does something amazing, which i think makes a lot more sense then an HD capable wii.
I do agree that we won't see a new Nintendo console until around 2015 (just in time to go shopping in our flying cars according to "Back to the Future 2"), but I doubt there will be an HD add-on. I wouldn't care if there was, since my family doesn't have an HD TV or care (myself included) to get one anytime soon (We consider HD highly overrated), especially if they drop GameCube support like the DSi did with GBA support.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
If graphic/cpu/memory power is not multiplied by 10, just making it able to emit in HD is a nonsense. HD just affects screen resolution, it doesnt mean the objects will be more detailed or you will have any better textures, shadows, reflections, etc. For better example, lets suppose they add an HDMI connector to the DS so you can see DS images in HD TVs at full resolution. Fine, but the graphics will not be any better. HD makes sense when you have a hardware that really can take advantage of larger resolutions, which is not the case of the Wii.
Nintendo always revamps their handhelds, while keeping their consoles pretty much the same for the most part, the N64 had the expansion pack and 64DD, but peripherals seem to be easier to sell than upgrades, as for blu ray I personally doubt it, big N have always been a bit odd in choosing their consoles media, while blu ray has many advantages I feel it would be kind of out of step for Nintendo to take the obvious route, but who knows.
This all sounds really expensive and not worth Nintendo's time with their current popularity. I did read an article somewhere though about how Nintendo is considering making a hybrid HD/SD (or HD/regular-D in layman's terms) console sometime in the future. (Most likely the FAR future.)

The Wii is the new NES in terms of longevity. The NES was still in production even when the N64 was released, and the Wii won't cease production until at least 2016.

Reasons why they WON'T make an HD version of the Wii:
-Nintendo doesn't traditionally redesign the technical specs when releasing an update on CONSOLE hardware. In other words is always just a physical change. And yes, an HD version of Wii would require a huge increase in processing power.
-All the games thus far have only been designed for standard resolutions and it's unlikely that a universal solution exist to upscale every game properly. If you look at the emu scene, which I in no way promote by the way, each individual ROM image needs to have different settings in order to run efficiently. By efficiently I mean simply playable as the games tend to run with technical hickups such as framerate drops, missing or distorted objects and/or distorted sound. Not to mention the lag involved with upscaling can completely render fast timing games, like Punch-Out!!, unplayable. It's just not as easy as everyone thinks to update to HD.
-The Current Wii model is still doing quite well sales wise, so why confuse consumers by introducing a new SKU where it's soul improvement is an increase in resolution? Something that I'm not sure the majority of Wii owners care about, I might add. I'm aware they've done it in the past with the Game Boy and DS lines but it's different with portables as they tend to be considered "disposable technology". A person can buy a lot of cell phones in a short amount of time but they don't buy a new DVD player if the one they have is still working. It's the same with portables/consoles.
As sure as I am that Nintendo is not readying a WiiHD, I'm just as certain that HD technology will be a vital part of their true next console, which I believe will be here in two or three years time.
Future Wii purchases: Super Mario Galaxy 2 Metroid: Other M Zelda Wii New Super Mario Bros. Wii Sin and Punishment 2
Even if a HD upgrade does happen none of those game are likely to be ported as most people who own a wii who wants those games own a 360/PS3 and not only is the market not there but the wii is still underpowered.

I doubt there'll be an add-on either, since, well, when has using an add-on to try and make your console more up-to-date been a good idea?
I'm pretty sure that we'll see a new home console from Nintendo before 2015. The Wii by a technical standpoint is already 4-7 years behind what an average computer would be. And I don't think I can only just live off of Nintendo games when it comes to consoles for the next five years.

There were a lot of errors in your theory. That's not what matters. I see how it can make sense though. This Wii HD thing that everyone talk about is essentially a new console, with the Wii name. It will need a better GPU to ensure it can still render these games at a higher resolution with a smooth frame rate. Also, I have no idea why you were talking about the increased memory capacity of DS cartridges.

Well for start i use the DS increase in cartridges idea as a backing up theory that Nintendo can and will increase future Wii Optical Disc memory, second even do it's still a rumor Nintendo has a habit of redesigning there handheld system but at the same time they used to create redesign Home Console the NES 2 and SNES 2 is prove of that and third it's a possibility that Wii HD is an entirely new Console but after reading this:
I highly doubt that the rumor Wii HD is a new Console.
SuperMarioman the Gamecube was in a way unappreciated by many what StarFox was saying that just like the NES lasted a decade even after SNES release the Wii might have the same honor depending on Nintendo's choice when and where should the Wii Console stop producing which in my opinion might happen in 2020.
shingi_70 and Digiki disagree Wii is not underpowered at the same time i think PS3 and Xbox 360 is to much overpowered.
V8 Ninja don't under estimated a Console/ Handheld's life, based on NPD and other resources they can last long on their popularity the Game Boy lasted 14 Years before 100% replaced by Game Boy Advance .

Yeah, the NES lasted longer than 5 years. But the SNES was still released right on time in 1990/1991.
The release years for Nintendo systems are 86/91/96/01/06, so why would the Wii suddenly have a 9-year life cycle? The norm for Nintendo is a new system every 5 years. During this generation their hardware is so inferior to their competitors' that they need a new system more than ever.
