The only thing i see is that Animalz, fitness and Birthday party 38 minigames and a half type of games must be a humongous success cause they fill almost 50% of the Wii space in all the stores I check.

Damn those ponyz

If they're still on the shelves when you get there, they can't be that successful

They dont rest. Every time theres a "new" version.

Last time in the very same rack I counted, and thats only from Ubisoft, 2 monkey games, 2 dogs, a tiger, a cat, a dolphin, a girl, a boy, a pony, wannabe doctor, wannabe veterinarian, wannabe mom, wannabe prostitute, Yoga, your shape, fitness, watch what you're eating...

And I swear those are different titles than last year!!!

Oh, and as for GTA: Chinatown Wars, Rockstar has no one but themselves to blame. They did zero advertising for that, and most GTA fans don't own a DS in the first place.

Advertising didn't kill GTA: Chinatown wars (or lacktherof), it was more the medium itself. The DS's demographics is over 50% female. None of those will be interested in the game, which slashes the target audience in over half. I'd say a good half of the boys that are left are too young for the game, and of the remaining half, a whole bunch would rather play that kind of game on the Xbox 360.

So... GTA: CW ended up being a game with a miniscule target demographic, as great as it was.

In regards to this topic - games cost a fortune to produce now, and required sales figures to be a success reflect that. A small game for the DSiWare would have smaller unit sales needed to be a success than a GTA.

800,000 is still nothing to sneeze at, even if it were on Wii. Considering the demographic of the DS, that's a whole lot. You're right, the DS is mostly female and little kids, but IMO that's a sizable number for a brand that failed on previous Nintendo handhelds.

@Hoff
Yeah, read the Ubisoft list for DS games in Q1. It's not very pretty.

Seriously. The thing with the PS3 and 360 is 95% of their user base are the self proclaimed "hardcore gamer" crowd, who frequent message boards and gaming sites. Those guys are going to support all those 3rd party games because first of all, PS3 and 360 have pretty much only 3rd Party games. Second of all, those guys really love rated M games.

They're sheep. They flock to most of those games because they're told to because of reviews and because "everyone else is buying it". As if caring what everyone else is doing is reason to do something yourself. If IGN and PS360 review sites touted a game where you did nothing but sit in one spot and fling pooh and said it was a MUST BUY ... it'd sell 1,000,000+ units.

Hardcore Nintendo fans are sheep. They'll flock to any Nintendo game and buy it because Nintendo made it. As if caring that Nintendo made it is a reason to buy it. If Nintendo Power touted a Nintendo made game where you did nothing but sit in one spot and fling pooh and said it was a MUST BUY.....it'd sell 1,000,0000+ units.

Quite possibly true. By the way, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Thanks.

Didn't Modern warfare 2 come out like a month ago? That has a way higher than attachment rate than Uncharted 2. So it being young doesn't mean too much of anything.

Yeah, Uncharted 2 is suffering because it's going up against MW2 on the same platform and people only have so much money. Ah well, at least it won some awards...

Sheep are sheep. I consider myself a hardcore Nintendo fan, but regardless of reviews, I only buy a game from them if I want it. Even if I had the videogame budget I wish I did, and the game got 9/10's or higher across the board, I still wouldn't own Wii Music. Or a Mario Party game (at least until they finally do something different with the franchise.) Neither would I own Mario Strikers, any of the GC or Wii Donkey Kong games, Mario Baseball, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks, and I'm probably not even going to buy Mario Galaxy 2. But Nintendo is my favorite company by FAR, and i heartily support nearly everything they do (even if i would handle certain things differently).

Assuming that the main post is restating the question, then it's hard to summarize. Usually video games (more precise the GOOD ones) cost thousands if not millions of dollars in today's market, and a company only profits from selling a product if they gain more than how much it took them to make it. So if the development for a game took a million dollars, and the game only sells about half of that, the developers lose a staggering amount of money.

You: I'm not talking about the amount of money, I'm talking about how many copies sell!

Well, that's more of a problem with the whole marketplace in general. You see, companies are all about making money. This unfortunately also leads to competition, which also leads to trash talking, even if certain products sell more than one company's other product. This trash talking gets around in the public and gets almost to a general knowledge level. People then actually believe this garbage and start acting stupid and smaller companies go out of business because the people don't care about buying a quality product, just making sure that they buy "the right product". And so is the fall of intelligence in the human race.
...
...
...What were we talking about again?
