Topic: Since when is everything that sells under a million considered a flop?

I decided to put this in the Wii section as this is where lack of sells are usually talked about. It today that if the game didn't sell a million copies that it's unsuccessful. I read another IGN editorial that talked about the status of M-Rated games on Wii. It was said over and over how No More Heroes was some sort of failure (except for Matt at the end of the article). It sold nearly half a mill with somewhat of a niche style and low budget. How is that not a success? Same goes for House of the Dead: Overkill. Don't get me started with all the questions regarding the DS GTA. Nintendo is always asked about it's low sales but it sold 800,000 copies. 800,000 COPIES! I'm sure there are a few imagine party animal raising babyz developers thinking "Wow, I wish out games sold that much."

Also, these are low end systems we're talking about. A game doesn't need to sell 2 million units to simply break even. Hell, Dementium is getting a sequel and it only sold about 9,000 copies. I want to know, what is the big deal about sells, GTA's sells were only low relatively, very relatively. Yeah it would be great if all the better Wii/DS games sold well over a million but it doesn't have to to make good profit, at least to my knowledge. So maybe you guys can enlighten me. What is all the fuss about.

Business liek monehz. To be honest that's probably basically what it is. The guys at the top get a hernia if their annual profit margins don't hit the 7th digit.

I think it's because the big hits on the PS360 sell to a larger percentage of owners and clock sales over 1,000,000, but the games on those platforms need to sell in those numbers to make a profit due to their larger budgets. They're (IGN) basically comparing apples and grapefruits. They focus on attach rate rather than recognising that Wii titles are cheaper to produce and sell over longer periods of time and don't need as big numbers to be profitable. The Conduit is called a flop, but given the kind of game it is, I think it did pretty well on the Wii and I'd be surprised if it wasn't profitable -- only High Voltage and Sega know for sure...

I heard High Voltage was VERY happy with the results, currently sitting at 320,000. I even believe a sequel is planned after they finish their other projects.

I guess that depends what you mean by flop. Some consider a game a flop if it doesn't make its money back (and then some), while others look at the number sold in comparison to the # of systems out there.

As a side note, I'm a little skeptical that High Voltage would be VERY happy with 320,000 units sold.

Maybe 320,000 units is good... "for a Wii game."

Hey, I actually LIKED The Conduit, remember.

I'm glad to hear that I hope they do plan a sequel

I'm pretty sure any 3rd party would be happy to sell over 300K units on the Wii given that Nintendo is pretty much the only company to achieve those kinds of sales normally!

Seriously. The thing with the PS3 and 360 is 95% of their user base are the self proclaimed "hardcore gamer" crowd, who frequent message boards and gaming sites. Those guys are going to support all those 3rd party games because first of all, PS3 and 360 have pretty much only 3rd Party games. Second of all, those guys really love rated M games. The Wii is made up of a thousand different demographics, so it's hard for rated M games, or any "hardcore" third party game on Wii to find mass appeal.

Another problem I have with these arguments is that, when you think about it, would Mad World really sell well on the PS3? No! It's a very niche title, it's not the sort of thing that's going to sell incredibly well on any particular console just because it's so weird and different. The same goes for Little King's Story--it's not rated M, but people complain about that game's sales. Little King's Story wouldn't reach 1,000,000 on the 360 or PS3, so why do they expect it to do so on Wii? The Conduit? Everybody was hating on the Conduit for being generic and uninspired--now they blame Wii owners for not supporting it? Huh?

These guys need something to complain about, I guess. Then they wouldn't have a job.

Oh, and as for GTA: Chinatown Wars, Rockstar has no one but themselves to blame. They did zero advertising for that, and most GTA fans don't own a DS in the first place.

Advertising didn't kill GTA: Chinatown wars (or lacktherof), it was more the medium itself. The DS's demographics is over 50% female. None of those will be interested in the game, which slashes the target audience in over half. I'd say a good half of the boys that are left are too young for the game, and of the remaining half, a whole bunch would rather play that kind of game on the Xbox 360.

So... GTA: CW ended up being a game with a miniscule target demographic, as great as it was.

In regards to this topic - games cost a fortune to produce now, and required sales figures to be a success reflect that. A small game for the DSiWare would have smaller unit sales needed to be a success than a GTA.

95% of PS3/360 owners are self-proclaimed hardcore gamers? Then why are games like Uncharted 2 struggling to reach a 5% attatchment rate? Why is Blu-Ray and other multimedia features a selling point for the PS3 if the only buyers are gamers? Why does Microsoft advertise Kung Fu Panda, Netflix and Facebook? And if 95% of any console frequently visited message boards.... well, nevermind.

Show me some evidence to support that statement, please.

And no, PS3/360 users clearly don't only support third-party titles, because first party titles are some of the best-sellers on each system -- Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 had insanely high attachment rates at release and still have good ones.

Is that not true?
And about the other stuff, yeah, 95% was totally made up. I was just saying that most 360/ps3 owners are those "hardcore gamers". And why are they advertising Kung Fu Panda, NetFlix and Facebook? Because they're trying to compete with the Wii! They're trying to look like a family console, because they know that if they can rake in the casual gamers they'll make a ton of cash. I don't know a lot about the PS3 and 360, but I know that much.
And didn't Uncharted 2 come out like 2 months ago? That's why it has a 5% attatchment rate. It's a young game!

The only thing i see is that Animalz, fitness and Birthday party 38 minigames and a half type of games must be a humongous success cause they fill almost 50% of the Wii space in all the stores I check.

Didn't Modern warfare 2 come out like a month ago? That has a way higher than attachment rate than Uncharted 2. So it being young doesn't mean too much of anything.

Well right, Uncharted isn't one of the biggest franchises in gaming. Call of Duty is. It's the same thing with Mario; we expect that game to sell a gazillion copies, but we know something like, say, Little King's Story (bad example, I know) takes some time to sell. If Uncharted 2 doesn't sell over a million copies in a couple months I'll be baffled.

It really isn't. Just look at all the great franchises Sony develops in-house -- Resistance, inFamous, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone, Uncharted, Littlebigplanet, Wipeout, and many more. All but one of those sells in the millions quite easily. To say that the 360 and PS3 ONLY have third party games, with or without a "pretty much," doesn't make sense to me.
