Topic: Nintendo Power reviews A Boy and his Blob, Dead Space Extraction, Spyborgs and more

Lot's of huge reviews from Nintendo Power--most of them of games that aren't even out yet. Here are the ones worth mentioning:

A Boy and his Blob: 8.5 (they didn't have any bad things to say about it, actually. They described it as fun, beautiful, and challenging. Makes me wonder why it only got an 8.5)

Dead Space Extraction: 8.0 (Once again nothing but praise. Seems like it should've gotten a higher score)

Spyborgs: 7.5 (I actually didn't read this review. I'll come back and put what they said later)

Mini Ninjas: 7.5 (Yeah I didn't read this one either)

Kid_A..is there any chance that you could scan teh A Boy And His Blob review? I am dying to read it as I am excited to play it because I pre-ordered it....I dont have a subscription to Nintendo Power either..Just wondering, that would be awesome..

Their Spyborgs review said that the main problem that it was repetitive and you had a limited move list! But I think that a 7.5 warrents possible purchase, I'll have to see what others say, can't always trust NP!

i never heard of a boy and his blob but people are always hyped about it, so ill give it a go

Okay, so just for the record this is all copyrighted by Nintendo Power Magazine. I don't own any of the following quoted passages.
So avoid potentially getting in big trouble for copyright infringement or something, I'll just quote some key passages.

“The first word that comes to mind when you play A Boy and his Blob is beautiful. The game looks absolutely stuffing. The rich, hand-drawn 2-D graphics a extraordinarily detailed, and the character animation is second to none; backgrounds are vibrant, multilayered, and full of visual flourishes. Colorful butterflies hover in fields of lush vegetation; stone walls seem to be built from individually crafted stones....If there was ever a game that fits the bill of “cartoon come to life”, this is it”.

“The second word A Boy and His Blob evokes is refreshing....this Wii update feels unlike anything else released in the last 20 years....Though your automatically given specific types of jellybeans for each level (so you're always prepared for the task at hand), there's still ample opportunity to use the tools to creatively overcome the obstacles and enemies before you”.

“As unique as the concept is, the presentation is equally novel. This is a very subtle game; most games try to beat you over the head with flashy cut-scenes, but this title wins you over with it's sophistication. There's no life meter, no lives counter, no level names, no voice-overs, no script, no dialogue, and no save screen (don't worry, the game auto-saves)....in A Boy and His Blob it works.”

The rest of it just talk about how it's fun and challenging. Like I said, absolutely no complaints mentioned. So why did it only get an 8.5?

As to why it got an 8.5?? Hmmm. That is a rather good score actually. I think perhaps it goes back to the mentality that if its not super 3D polygons , then its perhaps not 9.0 worthy? I don't know?? But 8.5 is good in my book....If you think about it perhaps when Wayforward does a sequel, that's where the 9.0 and 10 can come in !!!!

Yeah they do mention the soundtrack. Said it was outstanding. I would've probably typed out the whole thing, but I had homework.

Their reviews have become much more reliable in recent years. They've got a lot of new non-fanboy reviewers now, so the first party Nintendo games they review aren't nearly as biased. And their third party reviews are solid as well. I've actually been pretty impressed with them lately, to be honest. I'd trust their Dead Space Extraction review.

Well, it's nice to see they're trying for credibility these days. I actually haven't read it in some time but that's mostly because it left a bad taste in my mouth years back. Still, fingers crossed that they're right about Dead Space: Extraction.

I have a feeling that the more elitist sites like Gamespot and G4 will bash Extraction. They tend to view themselves as the ultimate hardcore gamers, and pretty much base all their reviews off of maintainting that reputation (which I'm not entirely sure is even a reputation you would want to have). But it looks like a very solid title to me.
