I have Mario Kart Wii, why would I want Super Mario Kart? I have Super Smash Brawl, why would I want the original? And I'll do Island Flyover on Wii Sports Resort instead of getting Pilotwings.
Star Fox, it's just the way their system works. If a game gets rated, they assume it is coming out that very year. There were a ton of games listed as coming out by the year's end on the Wii's first full year, one or two of which actually came out.
@Adam: That was early on. Now that the VC is fully established, IGN can't get overexcited anymore.
@Roebuck: All Mario Kart games are very different from eachother. SMK has retro, 16-bit graphics with very different steering (D-pad as opposed to the analog stick or wheel). It's also the only game to feature Donkey Kong Jr. (DKC hadn't been released yet). Mario Kart 64 combined modern, 3D courses with the older, 2D sprites. My only concern is Double Dash, which MKW seems to resemble heavily (especially since you can play MKW using any controller). The only notable difference in DD would be the two-person karts. Still, you really should get SMK. It's a classic.
SSB is fun because it's simpler than Melee or Brawl. The same goes for Melee vs Brawl. Simpler gameplay is often just as interesting as more features.
I was just using it as an example. They never abandoned the practice. Just wait until December 31st. Go to their page on that day and you will see a ton of games listed as being released today, none of which will actually be out or even hinted at by their publishers.

Why would you want to post in a VC thread since you have no interest in classic games? Remember the Virtual Console is a classic game service and you're not forced to download any of these titles.
Couldn't care less about nostalgia. If you want a game that's "poorly aged," look no further than Mario Kart Wii. Got old in a couple days while Super Mario Kart has yet to lose its charm. Tracks are better designed. The feather is awesome. And no blue shell or lightning cloud. Sounds like a winner to me.
Both SMK and SSB are so different from their successors that you can't really say the series have necessarily gotten better, just different. There are things each game does (SMK moreso than SSB) that its sequels have given up on, which make them worth playing even if you enjoy the sequels equally.
...2 steps closer to the ultimate release of "Donkey Kart SmashBound Island of Blood"!
Which translate to "Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Earthbound, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and Castlevania: Rondo of Blood!"
