I think so. The only game with Mario in is Dr. Mario. Okay so spin-offs are to be expected on the WiiWare especialy if the main series has become way too big (you can't get anything close to Prime, Twilight Princess or Galaxy on the WiiWare).
Yes, there are good games on the WiiWare that didn't rely on any established character or title but wouldn't we enjoy a WiiWare game with Mario or Zelda more? The service just feels empty without these star names although other companies have gone some way into getting their own big name names on the WiiWare. Thank you Konami and Hudson.
It would definitely help, but I don't know if Ninty can surpass the flood of great developers making the likes of World of Goo, NyxQuest, Water Warfare, etc.
I really liked Link's Crossbow as a retail title actually. I agree with one of the above comments, maybe retro remakes are the way to go. Donkey Kong Country 4 WiiWare anyone? A SNES or NES style Metroid game?
How about remakes of games that didn't quite turn out so well first time? Say Yoshi's Gravitation and Yoshi's Safari? Remastered
A captain rainbow wiiware game? It seems unlikely we're going to get the retail one in the EU
I absolutely don't think so, WiiWare is supposed to be an outlet for experimentation. Everybody knows that established IPs are popular and all they would do is drown out the less famous new games.
I would love some big names on WiiWare. And it wouldn't be to difficult either. A platformer like NyxQuest or LostWinds would be ideal for a Nintendo character.

I have said it time and time again.... when WiiWare was announced I thought it would be a perfect fit for an experimental SMB. Little did I know they were already working on it. New SMB Wii goodness, I can't complain.

I'd like For Nintendo to remake all the early Mario titles with updated graphics and in HD, put on Wiiware. Just like all the Hudson games and even Capcom's Mega Man9 . Titles like those would dominate sales charts. I want kid Icarus remake ...
When it launched, I'm sure the main purpose of WiiWare was to help smaller, independent developers get their games published and gain some exposure - so for this reason I think it's better to keep things the way they are, and have the major franchises come out as disc releases.
I agree with the whole "we need to help 3rd party developers" thing, but I'd also like to see experimental 1st party games. How about a top-down Metroid? Or a Kirby RPG?

The point of WiiWare and VC and every other Nintendo product is to make money. The company PR line might say it's to help independent devs but the point of everything Nintendo does is to make money. If they feel a big name release on WiiWare will stop people from buying a Lost Winds, then they probably won't do it. If they feel like they can sell a 2D Metroid 3 at retail for $50 instead of $15 on WiiWare, you better believe they would sell it at retail. I don't know for a fact, but New Super Mario Bros. Wii probably COULD have been a WiiWare game. Why would they do that when they are going to sell millions of copies of it at retail? With all of that said, I would LOVE new versions of old 2D games - New Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 4, Metroid 3 or Super Metroid 2, Castlevania ReBirth, Mega Man 10, etc.
I'd also like to see experimental 1st party games.
Is the Art Style series experimental enough?
Experimenting with things like RPGs is a major endeavor, you don't just make those on a small budget and with small profit potential, RPGs are expensive and complicated so you either go for retail or the absurd DLC Square-Enix is practicing.
Also I believe a top down Metroid is called "Zelda"...
