i don't agree with everything he says, but it's pretty smart and in depth, especially compared to most of the articles on samus lately.
that was a well written article. But I'm afraid of how impossibly long an article about, say, Mother 3 would be if he did such an in-depth look at the story.
anyway this line from the comments made me laugh because of accuracy "My God you think after nearly of month of this people wouldn't still be talking about it. The lesson that should be learned after all this is. Never change something in Nerd Culture. They don't know how to deal with it or accept it."
As sad as it makes me, I can almost guarantee that the next Metroid game will have little to no story behind it aside from "acquire items, level up, fight Ridley, fight whatever final boss is, see Samus in her undies if you get 100%." I totally agree with the line quoted from the person above me; you can't change anything. As someone who has been playing Metroid games for nearly 20 years now, I felt like the added character depth in Other M was a refreshing, natural progression for the series. It's a shame that all those whiny, bratty newbies who came into the series with Prime basically wanted Master Chief in a power suit and have likely killed any hope of future Metroid stories as deep or as emotional as this one.
they're probably the same people that complain about the lack of good 3rd party games on Wii but never bought Little King's Story, Muramasa or Klonoa.
I hate those people. A lot.
Hell I think it's only behind Pinball, Hunters and the hasn't aged well original as the worst Metroid game. And that's looking at it without bias. I wasn't in a good mood while playing it.
And I still think it was a good game. Not a great game but a good one.

That's different. A lot of those people are complaining that there's no games on the system that appeal to them. Klonoa is a great game...if you like easy 2D puzzle-platformers. Little King's Story is good if you like unconventional puzzle-strategy games. If you don't like those, then to you, there's nothing good. Sure, that doesn't mean there's nothing of quality on the system, but honestly if a game is good, but you're still not gonna like it, would you still care?
Anyways, I have no idea how any of that relates to disliking the evolution of Samus as a character. I just don't see how the two could possibly correlate in any way, shape, or form. I will give my opinion on the issue, though: Samus is(was) a Silent protagonist - a mysterious character who only expressed her thoughts through occasional actions. Unfortunately, Mysterious characters tend to stop being interesting once they're no longer a mystery. Then they're just a regular character. I don't need to know about her backstory. In fact, she could die in a hole for all I care. However, if she's dead, then I can't explore the amazing, interesting world she resides in, which I've always found to be the biggest appeal in a Metroid game. Sure, Samus never had much character, but the world itself always made up for that in spades. I'm not saying a Metroid game can't have a story, quite the contrary, actually, and many Metroid games have had good stories. I would just prefer it if the story would focus on the world itself.
Actually, now I'm starting to see the correlation here: both views are fairly selfish - it's all about what "I" want. Not what everyone else wants. Of course, in Metroid's case, if a series you liked has now changed in a way that you don't like, I think one is inclined to "let people know" that you don't like it, since at least that way there's a chance they might make a "return to form" with the next game.
And if the next game is a return to form, and Samus is no longer the focus and has the depth and personality of a piece of paper, as a fan of the series who dislikes the new change, and as an admittedly very selfish person, I'll say this: "Boo-hoo for you. Hooray for me!" I'm sure if things turn out the opposite, you'd say the same to me.

This is a good point and I won't deny that some people are like that and good for them I guess.
But the problem is that to be quite honest, Klonoa and Little King's Story both blatantly appeal to Kirby and Pikmin fans respectively. I find it hard to believe the absurd amount of people I've seen complain about this hate both of those series. (and I've seen plenty of those same people a year or so ago were pratically begging for a new game in either series)
And really, I've seen people ignore ALL suggestions despite desperately saying they want a new Wii game to get, even if it does appeal to them, even if they say what appeals to them matches some of these games perfectly. That's the problem. It's the same people. It's EXACTLY the same people who want EXACTLY the type of games that they know exist but refuse to get them anyway. I've seen it over and over again and I can confirm that it is exactly the same people and no matter what I can think of, the only reason is "it's not a new M rated shooter or a popular sequel/remake so it sucks." There is absolutely no POSSIBLE other explanation I was able to find from them even after trying again and again to think of another reason. (and that also should give you an idea on what the relevence to that quote is)
The fact I've had a very positive opinion about more recent games on Wii has little to do with what I am talking about outside of making me that much more annoyed by them.

I just assume those people are the same idiots who think only Nintendo can make a good game. Also, if the type of game they're looking for is exactly like what Little King Story and Klonoa have to offer, what makes you think they'd be interested in a modern gorefest shooter that is in every way the antithesis of those games?
Anyways, I see what you're saying as far as annoying you goes, I'm just saying...it's a terrible comparison.
I was never a fan of the beam-stacking system (I mean, how can you use the Plasma Beam at the same time as the Ice Beam?!). Make it more like Metroid Prime, or at least Super Metroid.
I don't get why everyone hates the voice acting...Samus is still a "bad ass" character that'll take down freakishly large monsters. >_>
She was scurred of her Arch Nemesis Ridley and the acting was even worse than Star wars Episode 2.
He killed her entire family, friends, boyfriends if she was into that. How would you react if someone you thought you killed, someone who killed everyone close to you at a young age just re-appeared?
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
I'd be up for it if they tuned up the combat (CONSIDERABLY) and the story wasn't so filler-y. And bring back the mysterious planet--Fusion and Other M both suffered, in my eyes, due to the on-ship location. It just doesn't feel right...and bring back the creepy atmosphere. The whole introductory section (following the self-destruct) where you're on Zebes and there isn't any life aside from random few-pixels background insects was just plain cool.
Tons of potential though...the exploration got kinda gimped though, and the forced "HERE IS EVERY POWERUP!" thing at the end kinda dispelled any illusion the rest of the game gave. Some stellar sections and boss battles, even if considerably marred by a poorly thought-out, elementary combat system. Sense move = wrong move.

Super Metroid beam stacked.
That's true, but I think he means how you could turn things on and off on Super Metroid Tbh, I just wanted to turn Space Jump off. I was getting bored of not being able to overblast and just shooting round the place

i actually thought the artificial environments were a really interesting idea. seeing the scenery flicker and disappear was pretty mind bending. i think that feeling of something not being right was intentional, but i can see how you'd want to explore a real world again next time.
i'd probably want to see another metroid in this style, the thing that bugged me in this game (and even then, only a little bit due to my metroid fanboydom) was in some of the story decisions, not gameplay
