They say it's coming out in 2011 with hd capable graphics, but it seems a bit early for 2011. What do you think guys? I do want a Wii HD though but wii has so much life still.

I wanna go on a rant about how 'Wii HD' will never exist, but last time I did I got screwed by the mods. So let me put it simply; Wii HD will never exist. Sure, Nintendo will make a console that uses HD, but this silly and stupid notion that Nintendo will make the 'Wii 2 with HD' is nothing more than that. Have a peaceful life, you guys.

Well, it isn't impossible, but personally, I don't think we will see a new Nintendo console, or any new console, in stores for a long time. I say they are going to be announced sometime between mid-late 2012.

I don't know. But they have talked about that step forward like twice. They have plans for the Next Wii already. They are just not ready to mention it yet.
i do believe nintendo will make a new system by 2011, but i don't think anyone should expect a wii that's simply been updated with HD output. nintendo have unequivocally denied that it will happen and it wouldn't help them compete against the other systems one bit to upgrade the video output while otherwise keeping the same old 'underpowered' guts inside. the more plausible idea is that they're working on a completely revamped wii that in additon to HD output will have the same amount of graphical power as the PS3 and Xbox, as well as a lot of other likely improvements here and there (hard drive, DVD playback, motion+ built into remote, less remote calibration required, ect. there's a lot they could do). it makes sense from a business perspective. sony and microsoft both have motion controllers coming out next year, and both are priced competitively with the wii, have far better graphics, and a huge amount of extraneous features that the wii does not. i'd still take the wii any day, but nintendo's dominance is clearly not what it used to be; the PS3 is already consistently outselling the wii in Japan and now the US.
you never know with nintendo; maybe they'll once again do something completely unexpected in order to remain on top. it does seem a little out of character for them to redefine video games by shunning graphics and focusing on new methods of gameplay, only to turn around and make graphics a priority, but maybe that's what it takes to stay competitive. there are certainly a lot of people in the game developing community who are convinced it's happening, and plenty of business analysts have explained why it's the logical thing to do.
if you want anything close to real evidence, here's what you've got-
nintendo's R&D budget for 2008 was over $300,000,000. compare that to $100,000,000 in 2006 when the wii was in the last stages of development and it's clear they're doing something big; new console big. in fact, it's probably the most money they've spent on R&D in their history.
AMD and IBM have a partnership that will expire at the end of 2011. because the wii's processors are manufactured through this partnership, it's vital for nintendo to make a new system while both companies are still on board so that they'll be able to make updated processors that are backwards-compatible. if nintendo does wait until 2012 or later to make their new system, it will not make use of the same hardware and you can bet it will have the same issues with backwards compatibility that the Xbox suffers from.
other than that it's all speculation. for a while i held out on buying a wii, just because i didn't want to feel ripped off when the fancy new system was announced, but in the end i decided i didn't care and bought one anyway. if HD and fancy graphics couldn't get me interested in the PS3 and Xbox, they won't get me interested in the Super Wii.
and wouldn't it be awesome if they named it Super Wii?
I do not know why everyone thinks that a Wii HD is going to be announced soon, but it is not going to happen for a few years at least. When was the Nintendo DS released? It was released in 2004. When was the Wii released? In 2006. It is way more likely that a sucessor to the Nintendo DS would be annonced way sooner than a Wii HD. I do not think a Wii HD will even happen. But, I think Nintendo's next console will have HD. So, I think we should worry more about a Nintendo DS 2 being announced for now.
Oops, I got the dates mixed up, fixed. Like I said, Nintendo is more than likely to announce a Nintendo DS 2 sooner than a Wii 2. The Nintendo DS has had a very strong and long life span (the Nintendo DS's general lifespan in nearly five years so far). By the way it's looking, the Nintendo DS could have a longer lifespan than the Game Boy Advance. So, that rumor of Nividia (or whatever it's called) helping Nintendo develop the Nintendo DS 2 is very possibly true. The Wii has a lot of life and potential left, so we might not even hear an announcement on any kind of Wii 2 for A LONG TIME.
a new wii console doesn't mean the current system will be over with. i was shocked when i saw the PS2 is still being manufactured; it's actually keeping up with the 360 in japan. nintendo could do something similar by supporting both wii system at once. and if you think it's too soon for a new console, bear in mind that if this wii does exist it won't likely be released for another two years; by that point absolutely all of the promising titles like the new zelda, mario galaxy 2, red steel 2, other M, ect. will have been released. i think by that time, and after a run of games like that, the current wii will have fulfilled a whole lot of it's potential. it won't feel too soon to have a new system announed at that time at all.
and you can debate whether a new system will read by by 2011, but there's no question that it IS being worked on. nintendo said that they begin designing the next console immediately after the last goes on sale. you can bet they've been working on the next system since 2006; why wouldn't they have a rough build of it by now?
Yeah, there are 2 topics oddly being confused here. I agree that the notion of a "Wii HD" is pretty silly. meaning just a Wii with HD output. Why? And why would anyone buy it? If anything that output could just be added on without any notice at all, it wouldn't make any difference, since it wouldn't actually improve anything without further storage or memory. Composite 480p looks as good as it'll get on an HD set as it stands so theres no reason to add HD arbitrarily.
About an entire new system? Certainly, of course they're working on one! WHy wouldn't they? I'm only speculating, but they'd be stupid not to be.
The Wii was such a brilliant move in that they managed to release the perfect cheap system that sells like hotcakes even in the hi-tech climate of the other two systems that has bought them years of advance time to let the better hardware get really cheap, perfect the motion tech and also let it get really cheap. In just a year or two while the 'other twos' sales are starting to level off Nintendo can then release a new, hopefully backwards compatible system that will stifle the others in terms of power, motion control, downloadable features, DVD playback (which I still believe is in much wider use than Blu-Ray ever will be, it's still too costly to take over versus DVD or digital download which will be pretty widespread soon with the likes of netflix/roku etc. I have a BluRay player and 65 inch 1080p tv and properly up-res'd regular DVD's are barely a step down from Blu ray, I think most consumers are not going to buy into it before download viewing takes over it's just too expensive, but basic DVD playback should at least be standard by now for game systems) Nintendo is very squarely positioned to simply release a new system with more power, internal memory, lots of storage, motion plus type of controls and a huge online store based on the one they've already started, and most importantly backwards compatibility for all the new Wii converts. Also if released in the next year or two they'll be able to release it at a price comparable to the current Wii console which will solidify it's place of dominance compared to other systems (theoretically). It's a great place to be in. Also the other unspoken big factor is software; There better be the most amazing new Mario or Zelda game ever packed with that thing. That tends to make or break N-systems. I think that may have been something that helped kill the cube in the first place. Luigi mansion kinda sucked, not a great first impression...I'm just saying... But then, like I said, this is all just fantasy speculation on my part, I really have no information to back any of that up, it just seems like the next logical step to me based on whats happening now.
There's a recent interview with Shigeru Miyamoto on IGN in which he says "we don't have any concrete plans for what we'll be doing with hardware in the future". That suggests to me that a new console is further than two years away
Hopefully it's completely over the other's in terms of graphics next time and still have similar controls in an easier way or something. Or new added motion. Also, if they do try to beat the other's in terms of graphics, I'm saying in the competitor's next gen as well.
