Square-Enix owns it, since it's a Taito property. I'd suspect Taito owns the translation, since the same translation was used in both Natsume's US release and Nintendo's PAL release (though the PAL version had multiple single-language releases). I'd love to see it, but hopefully they'd fix the bugs in the US version (or give us the PAL version, which fixed the serious ones and a few minor ones). I do await to see what comes first if they do release the two games on Virtual Console. II came first story-wise, and it's gameplay is pretty great for SNES. On the other hand, I's gameplay was pretty dated for SNES (you can't even choose the specific target for each attack), but it was still worth it for the writing and music.
Okay, so Square Enix is more or less active on the Virtual Console. I'd say there's more of a chance that it'll be released than if Natsume owned it. Here's hoping.
I'm not very interested in the "remake". I wish they kept the old-school gameplay and just gave it a graphical revamp.
I watched that trailer. It looks like it'd make an interesting NEW game, but it just seems like they bastardized a SNES classic.
What happened with Natsume on VC, anyway? They released like...one or two games, then nothing. On the other hand, while Squenix IS active on VC, most of the games have been Japan-only lately. So I doubt the odds are really very good either way.

@SSBF: Mostly true. I had to rely on them for Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, though. I wonder if they're planning to release the second Tingle game in Europe...
Anyway, I'm pretty sure he was just joking.

Doesn't sound like there's a whole lot to release. According to the Game Developer Research Institute, much of their NES dev was contracted/licensed games. Possible releases (stuff published by Natsume or Taito): SCAT/Action in New York, Shadow of the Ninja/Blue Shadow, Power Blade (although I hear Taito Japan wasn't happy Taito America made in an attempt to de-suck their Japanese game, Power Blazer), Spanky's Quest, Pocky & Rocky 1/2, Wild Guns, Ninja Warriors, Natsume Championship Wrestling Maybe Shatterhand, but Jaleco published it, and aren't they sorta-dead?
Jaleco has released some VC games, though...I specifically recall seeing them on the Publishers list on the Shop Channel.
Otherwise, your post is very informative, KingMike. I didn't realize just how little IP Natsume actually owns. Nowadays, they seem to do pretty much nothing BUT Harvest Moon, but I didn't think it was because that's all they have free reign for.

At this point, it would end up coming to the Wii U VC. I wouldn't hold my breath for a western release though. Square Enix has released nothing on the Wii U VC outside of Japan yet.
Jesus is the only way.
