I've been thinking about the great modern Metroid game Nintendo surely has waiting in the wings for it's fans. Of course there will be many people who enjoy the offline mission, but maybe more these days that want well developed online modes. So do you think Nintendo owners would give room for two online shooters?
Considering that online shooters aren't big business at all on Nintendo systems, it's interesting to think about I think
No it would not. Why? Because they are two different set ups (First person shooter vs third person shooter). Also Metroid has a very dark and brooding feeling, where Splatoon is the opposite. So I think the two could live side by side, without one killing the other. Your statement is like asking if Call of Duty could kill the Last of Us, lol.

That's fair to say. If a multiplayer Metroid and Splatoon were releasing on platforms where online shooters are among the top sellers, I'd not have wondered about it so much. But given that online shooters like COD when it was around, aren't even close to what most Wii U owners are buying (Mario Kart), I really wonder about two online multiplayer shooters thriving on the system
It would depend on what kind of shooter an online multiplayer Metroid would have. Are we talking Team-Based or Free-for-All; Deathmatch or Objective Based; Slower and more tactical or fast-paced and action-ey? There are many different kinds of online multiplayer shooter and two could survive simply because they would be two very different games. I have yet to hear about any specific 2D platformer struggling on the Wii U simply because many other 2d platformers exist on it. Could two shooters both survive on the Wii U's install base? I'd say so. Neither, let alone if only one existed, would exactly have the thriving playerbase of other online multiplayer shooters, but with the lack of competition, I'm sure both could manage to be fine.

You have the right to disagree with me and the ability to consider anything valid that I say; Please exercise both.
As has been said, Metroid and Splatoon have different tones and would likely be different types of shooters. If Nintendo has a new Prime waiting to be revealed, I would definitely appreciate a large multiplayer to be a part of the experience again as it is in Hunters. It's the Wii U, Nintendo's HD console, and their games are now reaching $60. I expect more than just single player from Metroid now.
The online scene is a big place and there's room for a lot of players.
This holiday season on PS4/XBO, there will be Halo 5, Star Wars: Battlefront, Rainbow Six: Seige, and Black Ops 3. All four will probably do just fine.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
I wouldn't put too much weight into this idea that "Nintendo gamers" don't play a particular kind of game. Bayonetta 2 for example has sold pretty well compared to the original when you remember how many Wii U's exist. That said I wouldn't be surprised if Splatoon does slaughter a Metroid if/when it comes out in terms of sales. Not because Wii U gamers like "colourful games" but because Metroid is not CoD.
To put it simply, Metroid is Alien, Splatoon is Mario CoD.... so....
Call of Duty: AW: 19million
Mario Kart 7: 11million
Alien Isolation: 1.6million
@skywake I'm not stating that Nintendo players are predisposed to not play a certain kind of game, but I am saying that online shooters have never done big numbers on Nintendo platforms, let alone the biggest numbers. Unless I'm forgetting a game, what online shooter ever thrived in a major way on a Nintendo console? World at War must have been the biggest selling shooter of all time for Nintendo and I don't recall there being a significant online community for it. So what I'm saying with that is Nintendo hopes to make Splatoon a Mario kart level success on Wii U, but it's really not known if it will reach the number of online players of MK. Throw in another heavily promoted online shooter from Nintendo, like Metroid, and I'm not sure what might happen. Best case scenario, like on other consoles, nintendo's online shooters both become the most widely played genre online, ousting even a karting game. But I'm not convinced that will definitely happen given historical trends.
Goldeneye 007 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 actually faired pretty well on the online scene. It was active around here for a good while, at least. The Conduit 2 didn't do too bad, either. Well enough for 2 7+ page threads on this forum, at least.
If anyone feels that even if a new Metroid had multiplayer developed with the same ambition as Splatoon's multiplayer, but Splatoon still takes the bigger audience, i would find that interesting as well. I wonder though, can Splatoon, a new IP, really topple Metroid?

I'd put it this way. Since around the mid 2000s the FPS genre has been basically shorthand for "look at how good our visuals are". Hell, Metroid Prime itself is probably partly responsible for that perception. And none of Nintendo's consoles that have had online are at all competitive in terms of visuals. So your question is flawed. Of course online shooters haven't smashed it out of the park on Nintendo's platforms. There haven't really been any that mattered. I'd argue that Splatoon is the first shooter that has mattered on a Nintendo platform since Perfect Dark.

Splatoon will crush Metroid in terms of sales. Easily. And if Metroid had a multiplayer mode I doubt many people would even care. Because Metroid is NOT a multiplayer game. As I said, Splatoon is more like Call of Duty than Metroid is.
@skywake I also feel that Splatoon is the first online shooter that has "mattered" we'll say, on a Nintendo console given it's design and developer. But I think that a online HD Metroid multiplayer with that design priority that the series has not yet had, would be a contender for this new "shooter audience" that comes out of Splatoon, if indeed Splatoon is a success

But Splatoon doesn't have Mario, Link, or Miis on the cover. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Metroid would sell gangbusters, but I don't think Splatoon is going to do that well. It's a new IP on a system that is selling horribly.
Best thread ever

But that's why I put "Metroid online" in the thread title. I'm speaking hypothetically. There's also been online multiplayer in Metroid in a system that was not a robust kit for online. I'm assuming that online is more important for a successful Metroid more now than ever. Heck, luigis mansion, also on the Cube, was also not a multiplayer game until this generation
No, the earliest we would see an online Metroid, providing they have one, would be 12 months from the end of this week. If the online is a significant aspect to the game, they wouldn't release it so close to another game where the online function is also a significant part (splatoon), it would be cutting into their own profits. By the 12 month point, splatoon would have a dedicated fan base

Well only two Metroid games have sold more than 2mill and one of those was the NES original. Which isn't particularly impressive really. Compare it to Zelda where Minish Cap is the only major release that hasn't hit 2mill. If they had one on the Wii U which is, as you said, their worst performing platform ever? We should set our expectations low.
But then there's Splatoon which you could brush off entirely because it's a new IP. But given what it is I wouldn't be that surprised if it did break 2mill. Even on the Wii U where 2mill is very, very impressive. The original Pikmin moved almost 2mill units, the first Professor Layton did extraordinarily well. The same was true for Halo on the original XBox, Gears on the 360 and The Last of Us on the PS3. Then there's Portal which sold pretty damn well also. New IP is risky for sure but it can do very well if it is done well and nails what people are expecting from that platform. My guess would be that Splatoon, based on the reception thus far, could well be one of those titles.
