Soooo...the eshop has been down most of the day due to "high levels of traffic" so does this mean that there's been another eshop DDoS attack? If so hopefully it won't be down for almost a week like it was during the holidays last year.
Or could it be possible that there are high levels of traffic in the eShop? Don't always assume the worst of things.

I just got in. So no there doesn't seem to be another after Christmas crisis but I'm actually surprised this didn't happen after the Smash demo launched. Hmm, maybe I should go ahead and download now that I'm thinking about it (being running nothing but Theatrhythm since Thursday).
Current Playlist: Age of Calamity, Stardew Valley, ACNH
The Christmas crash was because of high eShop load. They not only had a bunch of people getting their new 3DSes but they had people downloading codes, getting their promotional games and moving their NNIDs to new systems. Worse still in Japan on that day they launched Pokemon Bank. Plus it was a global outage that went on for days as people kept hammering the servers.
I don't see why that would be happening again today. What reason? Seems more likely to be a local issue or some sort of partial maintenance. Maybe they're adding extra servers for when Smash comes out next week. Would make sense.
Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year

Yes, Smash release would likely be a repeat of Christmas last year and that could possibly be why they didn't do a worldwide release.

I remember being annoyed because I couldn't download Super Mario Bros 3 during that.

We had to wait almost four months beyond our promised release date for that game.
